[00:01:05] Hey there, welcome to SharkCast, part of podcast dedicated to the greatest sporting club in the history of the world, the mighty Cronulla Sutherland Sharks. This short, sharp, team list, possible mailbag edition of SharkCast is brought to you by Dyson Logistics, the Royal Motor Yacht Club in Port Hacking and Jason Hawes of Crips & Crips Real Estate. My name is Sam Shinazzi, OG 2015, a lifetime of supporting the club prior to that.
[00:01:30] And we are in some heady times with a couple of, well more than a couple, three out of the last four losses to the club and significant losses at that. So, a lot to get through, a lot to dissect, a lot to talk about. More episodes coming throughout the week. A bunch of you have already been in touch. I might try and get through some of that today. And if you haven't or if we don't get to your mail in this episode, we will later in the week. SharkCastPod at gmail.com
[00:01:59] You can go to our website, sharkcast.com.au And you can leave a written contact page entry there. Or you can also leave a voicemail on there, which is pretty easy to do. No swearing allowed, but otherwise keep it to sort of 30 seconds to a minute and we'll have your say on the show. Sharks lost to the Broncos on the weekend. I think it was 34-28 from memory. A game the Sharks should have won.
[00:02:24] They led for the majority of the game and ran out of wind, ran out of gusts, ran out of energy. It was a game where the errors came back to bite them. And there could be no disputing that. From the Sin Bin to Katoa to Kicks Out in the Fool by Trindle and some errors from Niko and Will. And there's a whole bunch of them. The whole bunch of them. I'm not singling out one person. So it was disappointing.
[00:02:54] And the only way to turn that around is hard work. And we've got a big task this week, which we'll get into shortly against Melbourne in Melbourne. Not a happy place for the club to go to. And I think that if anything, weeks like this where there's been a lot of fan interaction throughout the media and social media, obviously. A lot of negativity. A lot of people are unhappy. And you know, a lot of those cases, absolutely rightly so.
[00:03:25] Hello, Gary Durba. Hello. Congratulations. Thank you so much. How are you? I'm good. I was just recording a podcast. I'm going to stop now because I've got you on. Do you want to say hello to the world? Oh my gosh. I'm so sorry. Hello, everybody. No, I'm just going solo. So Gary is calling with some good news, which we will release to the public later in the week. But you can imagine what that good news is. I'm going to hit pause on the podcast. Just a second to world.
[00:03:54] Football. All right. Not quite sure where I paused there because I've just been talking to Gary Dover, friend of the show, on the show. He's got his own show in Sharkars Pod, Gaz and Shanaz. He and the lovely Beck and their beautiful family have brought into the world a baby girl. So congratulations to the Dovers. Now, back to the Rugby League. Sharks in Melbourne this week.
[00:04:24] I'm just going to go straight to the team. I don't know what I've been saying because I've been paused for so long, but let's go straight to the team. And a lot of people are calling for a lot of change. Some are calling for some change. Whether you've heard the team, whether this is the big reveal for you, I'm here to tell you there's not a lot of change. So make of that what you will. This is how the team stands at the moment. It could always change. It could change during the week. It could change 24 hours before kickoff.
[00:04:53] It could change an hour before kickoff. Currently, this is what we've got. Will Kennedy at fullback. Your wingers are Sione Katoa and Ronaldo Mulatalo. Your centers are Jesse Ramian and Sifat Tala Kai. Halves, Braden Trindle, Niko Hines. Forward Pack. Front row, Adin Fenua Blake. Blake Braley. Oregon Kofusi. Back row, Britton Nikara. Teague Wilton. Captain Cam McInnes.
[00:05:21] The immediate bench is Dan Atkinson. Jesse Colquhoun. Toby Rudolph. Braden Hamlin-Welley. Your 18th man is Billy Burns. Extended bench of Hoheba Puru. Nephi Puru. Chris Vaila. And Jaden Beryl. So Oregon Kofusi returns to the team and to the starting team. Braden Hamlin-Welley drops back to the immediate bench. Sifat Tala Kai holds his spot.
[00:05:50] Teague Wilton has been named to play despite his visit to the hospital during the game with an eye injury. Dan Atkinson holds his spot. And Billy Burns has been elevated to 18th man. With Hoheba dropping from the immediate bench to the extended bench with his brother Nephi, Chris Vaila and Jaden Beryl. That is your team to play Melbourne. And love to hear your thoughts on that. A bunch of you have already sent that in. We'll get to a bit of your mail shortly.
[00:06:18] But not much change there from last week. Now it's important to realize that the team was getting the job done for about an hour of the game. We need them to do it for 80 minutes. I get it. Potentially the coach saw enough in some of that game where if they had held their game plan, if they'd done the right things, not be Sinbind, held the ball, not kick out in the full, maybe they would have gotten away with that game. I assume they would have.
[00:06:44] There was criticism about the smaller middles being on the field at one time. And that is when the Broncos ran through us. This week, it's a very similar looking team. With the exception of Kofusi back in and Hoheba out. So how they juggled that bench is going to be quite fascinating to see. We obviously don't want to see a repeat of what happened last week. It's a tough road trip. We'll get into that shortly as well.
[00:07:14] Let us know your thoughts. Sharkhastpod.gmail.com I think that's what I was saying when Gary rang up before. Website, sharkhast.com.au And social medias. You can DM us via the X, via the Facebook, via the Instagram. We're also on TikTok and Blue Sky. And I don't know if the notifications are on for that, but we get to that sort of once a week. So we're around. The other thing you can do is subscribe and follow us on all those outlets.
[00:07:42] Also on YouTube, if you can give us a follow there. Like, subscribe for free. That'd be awesome and really helpful. That was your team list for the Sharks. Let's get to some of your mail. Chris was in touch via sharkcast.com.au on the contact page. And he left this during the game. He said it's currently 24-28 with 20 minutes to go. I dearly hope that Atkinson has done something when you read this after the show. Cooper Cronk, spot on in saying the Sharks are too small to defend Payne Haas.
[00:08:11] If the game is lost, it's due to the stupidity of Ramian or Ronaldo. Hope I am wrong. You're not wrong in that we lost. Chris, obviously. Thank you for being in touch. Thanks for being on the website too. And Cooper Cronk, he's never wrong. I don't know if the game was lost through the stupidity of Ramian or Ronaldo. I think the game was lost through a number of different moments. The one that I keep going back to, and you all know I'm a huge fan of what he does, is Sione Katoa's brain snap 30 seconds before halftime. We got through that.
[00:08:39] We didn't concede and we scored a try via Blake Braley. And I think everyone, including the fans and the podcasters, were like, this is done. But it wasn't done. And I think in those 10 minutes, the defense probably soaked up more than what they were used to. 12 against 13. Great effort. I think that was costly. I know it was costly. And there were other things that I've mentioned as well already. So appreciate you, Chris. Thanks for being in touch.
[00:09:07] Now, a lot of you left comments on YouTube, which I think I've replied to a lot of them on YouTube and also via a lot of the social medias. We post a lot, I guess, leading up to the game and after the game during the live stream, the post-game live stream. So I think I've replied to a bunch of those. Thank you to everyone who did subscribe on YouTube. I can see it in front of me. Now, Steven has been in touch. He said, For 50 minutes, we dominated that game. Looked like the team I thought we were going to be. But it's become a serious concern.
[00:09:36] We're unable to defend our errors. But over and also over several occasions, the amount of soft tries we can see. We showed for 50 minutes how good we could be. And there's no disgrace in going up to Brisbane and losing by six. But leading by 16 twice and going down really isn't great. Completely agree, Steven. For me, we can't win the comp with this squad or this coach. But is there anyone better to replace the players, coach or coaching staff? From what I can tell, not really.
[00:10:06] So we'll have to be happy with just being a bit above average. We're a decent bottom half of the eight side. But from what I'm witnessing this year, we'll struggle to make the eight. We have no mongrel about us apart from Ronnie and Matt is a massive factor in winning a comp. There were some great moments in that game for us, but we desperately needed to win that game and show some real will to win. But unfortunately, our team showed they didn't want it more than the other team, which is the most disappointing thing. Storm next week. Let's see what we can produce. That's from Steven. Thanks so much, Steven.
[00:10:34] That's a really great piece of correspondence. And I agree with all of that. I think the majority of it at the very least. But the will to win and putting all of that on the line when you need to, definitely missing this year. You know, we've dropped a few games this year with Tigers, Raiders, definitely Broncos. There's a few more that come to mind that could slip into that category where just should have got the job done and didn't. So there's a lot of reasons why and a lot of people to point the finger at.
[00:11:04] It's not one person, that's for sure. But it's definitely become an issue. Brock says, I'm a shark supporter and have been all my life following in my father's footsteps, who was the biggest shark supporter I knew. He had supported gear and every jersey you can think of. Went to school with the late Steve Rogers and good friends with him growing up. I also enjoy your podcast. I've been listening to you guys since you started, but never actually wrote in until now.
[00:11:34] Brock, you legend. Thank you so much. That's great. Thanks for the support. You're doing a fantastic job and hope you keep doing this for as long as possible. My son, who is also a shark supporter, also loves to listen. We listen to each show. We can't always be on the live ones, but listen to it later. Try not to miss a single one. And we both love the WWE. So keep up the good work, Sam, Kieran, Gary and Dan and all the other people. Thank you so much. So, Brock says,
[00:11:59] My father is partly deaf due to age and can't hear it, but tell him what's going on as best I can. But he watches the game each week with us. Sitting in his special shark's chair made for him by a family member who makes furniture. Now onto why I messaged you today. I've had enough. The time has come where I need to have my say about the disappointing team we're watching. I'm a coach of an under 18 side in Shoalhaven. Been coaching for 10 years, 9 grand final appearances, 7 premierships, 3 of them being undefeated.
[00:12:25] A number of my players have been recruited to the Steelers and other clubs over the years. So I know about coaching. I'll start now with Craig Fitzgibbon, who I also know from the Joe and Gone area. I hear a lot of your callers wanting the coach sacked in certain players' heads. This is what the problem is, and whether you or the listeners agree or not, I can guarantee you if it was done, it would be better for it. Due to injury to certain players in form, I'd be doing this.
[00:12:52] I'd be dropping Ramien, Atkinson, Kennedy, Kifusi to cup. Ramien and Kifusi till they find form at least. Taj Ford or Niko to fullback. The other to 6. Trindle to 7. Viola to the centers. With Talakai for now until Iro is back. Then Talakai would be on the bench later on with Colquhoun, Rudolph, Puru. 18th man would be Sam McCulloch. I would not use Atkinson on the bench again. The Sharks let Sam Healy go, which was a mistake.
[00:13:22] He'd be better off on the interchange, giving Braley some rest time. The bench is being wrongly used. They can beat the Storm if he leaves Atkinson out, Kifusi out, Ramien out. These changes would ignite the fire in the Sharks, I guarantee it. And you also talk about releasing some players, bringing some guys in through. That's my opinion. Hope somebody can get it through. Hope they can start a run, sneak into the 4 and win the damn thing. Let's go. Cheers Sam up up. That is from Brock. First of all Brock, thanks so much for being in touch.
[00:13:53] Thanks for being a long time listener. Hello to your family that listens. And I appreciate what you're saying. You're an experienced coach and that's your side of things. And some of that I think will work. Some might be a bit rushed. I don't know if Taj Ford's ready for example, but that's just my opinion. But you've had your say. Really appreciate it. Feel free to have your say any time. And great to hear from you. Neil says,
[00:14:47] I thought Hoheppa and Toby were good off the bench. As for the refereeing, I thought we were hammered and that didn't help. But that's no excuse for our errors and lack of discipline. My question now Sam is can we make the top 8? Thanks for all you do. I wish it could have been a happier email up up from Neil. Oh, I wish it could have been happier too, but I appreciate hearing from you. Can we make a top 8? Yeah, we can make a top 8. And that's not Homer talk. That's a fact. We can make a top 8. We're a good team, not playing very good.
[00:15:16] And are we a great team? At the moment, definitely not. But we've seen this team do great things. We've seen this team knock off big teams, despite what the media will tell you. Let's see what happens against Melbourne. But we can make the top 8. And, you know, that's kind of not good enough because we wanted this team to be top 4. We wanted to be top 2, to be honest. So, top 8, eh, I don't know if that's a success at this point. But I think it's finals, you know, or whatever word you want to insert.
[00:15:45] But we need to make the finals, definitely. Hope you're good Neil, aside from all that. Thank you so much. RCB's been in touch. What else do you say at this point about these fairy floss sharks? Spin, sugar and hype. But in the end, what do you have? A sickly feeling and sticky hands. RCB, you have a way with words. Many sharks teams were less talented, far less. But few have been as spineless as a collective. You ask why the Raiders and Dogs and Warriors have gone past us.
[00:16:13] I'd say leadership from senior players demanding consistent performance and effort. They work harder for the guys next to them than our guys do. Oh boy, you have a way with words. That hurts, RCB. It looks to be correct. But it hurts. Chad's been in touch. He said, embarrassing. He said, Nico is playing at less than half his purchase price. The bench is frustrating. Puru is good, but he's a smaller body. Plus, Atkinson on the bench is getting ridiculous.
[00:16:42] What do you do with Nico? Nico, when things are going well, he's fine. Any pressure, he crumbles. This game wasn't his fault. With that lead, we again can't shut a team out. Yeah, interesting, Chad. Thanks for being in touch. I mean, the Nico subject is out there in the general media. 360 last night did a 5-10 minute piece on it. And I guess it's the price tag and the position he's in. Leading by 16.
[00:17:12] He's a very big part, along with the rest of the spine, of sealing out the game, of icing out the game. So I don't know what happened, why it didn't happen, because we can talk about the small bench. And so they're kicking from maybe not great positions, but still, get your best kick in there. Get down there and tackle and make them play out of their end. And I'm sort of not sure what to say, but that loss in a lot of ways, because there were so many different factors to it. So I'm with you.
[00:17:42] I'm not blaming Nico Hines on this. But he certainly had a disappointing second half or, you know, last 30 minutes. Whereas he and Trindle were really good leading up to that. So it was like, well, what happened? Why did you stop playing? So, very disappointing. And unfortunately for athletes like him, the argument will not go away until they have some success. And, you know, last year that looked pretty successful. Last year, getting to the prelim was successful.
[00:18:12] This year, sixth and falling, going in around 17, I think it is. And that's a bit troubling. Smitty's been in touch, said, was confident the start of the year would be a top four team. Now I'm confident we won't even make the eight. Even if we just make the eight, it's a big fail in my book. Not impressed at all. I'm not usually like this, but I see nothing getting fixed. Well, as I just said before, Smitty, if we just, if we fall into the seventh or eighth,
[00:18:40] if we finish, you know, even six, seven or eight, it's not a successful year. At this point in time, we're clinging onto that hope that we can do that. But we're hoping for top four, top two. So interesting times. Appreciate your support, my friend. Okay. Steven, different Steven from before has said, I'm fed up to the back teeth with the Atkinson experiment on the bench. Although I suppose it's not an experiment at all. It's clearly Fitz's preferred 17.
[00:19:08] Atko is a capable six or seven, but a below average prospect for every other position. The sole logical reason for having him on the bench is to come in for Nico or Tricky, which is ridiculous. For literally every other scenario of needing cover, needing something from your bench, we have better options. It's maddening. And if Fitz doesn't make up to the reality of it, he could lose his job. That's from Steven. Thanks for being in touch.
[00:19:32] I think that if we don't make the eight, if we just kind of struggle and just make the eight, and then next year there's the same kind of issues. You know, I think the questions will be asked. I don't know if they're being asked at the moment. And I don't think that's completely unfair. I think that a, there's time to turn things around and B, there's a few circumstances where someone in a coaching position could make some arguments about why things are happening, et cetera, et cetera.
[00:20:01] And I don't jump down my neck about that. But that's just what I think. Right. But I also wouldn't be so either naive or so off the whole subject, like, you know, so annoyed that you, like he'll be feeling it and he'll be getting asked questions. So I don't think he's in any danger of losing his job and nor do I think he should be perfectly honest, but it's not like at this level of sport and business, you know, you lose by 40 and then give up leads.
[00:20:31] You know, people will ask questions. So hopefully they can win in the questions that get asked. All right. Jay's been in touch a stat based on the current top eight. Right now we are one and six with the only win being against Melbourne. And against the other competition, we are seven and one. So that says a lot. It was different last year, but this year it's different again. He also mentions the post game live stream. I tried to find a link to call in on Instagram. I couldn't find it.
[00:21:00] So just a bit of admin there, the way that it's all designed, what I'm using with YouTube, with Facebook, it all sort of flows really nicely. Lastly, the comments come in and you can click on a button, I think, and it takes you straight to our studio, so to speak. We can call in, dial in. But with Instagram, it's a bit separate where we can stream live on there. But for me to go look at the comments, I've got to sort of go to Instagram and have a look, which is fine.
[00:21:26] But the big thing with Instagram, and most of you will know this who use it, is you can't leave a link in the comment. So moving forward, I'm going to try and put a link on a story. So I'll have a story saying, hey, the show's coming up and I'll have a link. And I'll try and put one in the bio, so to speak. So link in bio, which you also know about that. If you go to just our SharkCast account on Instagram in the bio, I'll put a link there if I can get to it. So it's all a bit timely and how things are going.
[00:21:54] But appreciate you, Jay, for raising that because it is a bit of a pickle. All right, Brent has been in touch just after the game finished. He said, had the game won, led by 16 and still found a way to lose, now in sixth place. And he's also presuming we'll lose to the Storm and be out of the eight next week. He's calling the season. He also says, Nico leads to learn how to hold the ball, being a million dollar player. And Ramian should be replaced by Viola. All right, Brent, not happy. Appreciate you. Thank you.
[00:22:23] John says, what a deflating game. What are your thoughts on moving Trindle to seven and Nico to six? I disagree with the argument it's only a number. Let Trindle run the team and Nico run the ball. There are clutch moments in games where I believe Nico is first shot due to the number on his back. I genuinely believe there is a place in the team for Nico, but it needs to be a ball running six. Also, is it worth mixing up the captains? Trindle in place of McInnes. Cheers, John.
[00:22:50] John, I'm not sure if I answered this somewhere else, but happy to answer it here, of course. And thanks for being in touch. On the captaincy thing, I don't have a problem with Cam being our leader. I think he is an inspiration in his own way. I know people would argue that, well, where is he on the field when tough times are needed? I don't have a problem personally with him being captain. But if you wanted to switch it up, I would also not have a problem with that either.
[00:23:15] I think I would make the change only if Cam was on his way out and we knew that. I don't think I'd be going for Trindle though, to be honest. I'd probably be looking at a Teague, perhaps a Fenua Blake or a Blake Braley as well. I don't think Trindle, I think Trindle's too young at the moment for this kind of thing. As for the positions of the Harbs, happy to try that, absolutely. And I can see how it's not just a number thing. So happy to try that.
[00:23:45] Appreciate you being in touch. Andrew said, I'm so gutted after today's game. Got some real worries, no excuses today. Very sad. I mean, I think that's very true, Andrew. Like we're all sad and there are definitely no excuses. Absolutely no excuses in that game against Brisbane. Oh my God. You've got huge leads twice in the game and then you get sin binned for something ridiculous that you shouldn't have done. You have lots of errors, some poor defensive reads. It's absolutely all on the team. There are no excuses, you're right.
[00:24:14] But I hope you feel less sad. Steve says, top four gone, top eight about to be gone. Also not happy with the bench. And you're asking what the holdup is with re-signing Stone Street and others. You think that even if we scrape into the eight, it's a waste of time. I'm not happy with the Atkinson on the bench. And you say, you say it's the same thing each week with no changes and no changes to the results. So appreciate you being in touch, Steve.
[00:24:42] I hope that you stick tight. I mean, this is the club we love in good times and in bad. And I'm not sure what these times are, but they're certainly not good. So hopefully we can turn around with a win just to at least take a step back. I'll say this, and we'll do previews throughout the week and we'll get more into it. But winning in Melbourne is not impossible. And if you play like you played last week with a bit more starch, it's certainly not impossible. They actually played pretty good for a lot of the game.
[00:25:13] Now there were 20 line breaks in the game in total. So defense needs to be better. Yeah, winning in Melbourne is not impossible, but you got to do it for 80 minutes, maybe more. Paul, good friend of ours has been in touch throughout the week. You say that you hate Nico being blamed for all of this. And also quite critical of Craig Fitzgibbon and his role in us losing against Brisbane.
[00:25:39] And I think that's topical in the sense that that was a small bench and also the small bench on at the same time did cause alarm bells. But I will say this, Paulie, and I know it's a cliche, but he's not on the field doing all that horrible stuff. He got them into a frame of mind where they came out, attacked really well, defended pretty good in the first half. Like there was a dummy half try, but that was in the back of defending three or four sets. Like there were a lot of good signs, but second half blew it.
[00:26:09] And okay, he's picking the team. I get that and he's re-signing these guys, but he's actually not on the field doing all that kind of bad work. And again, I know it's a cliche. It doesn't excuse him from criticism, etc. But yeah, sometimes just wonder if it's all on the one person, whether it's the coach, the player. I mean, there were a number of bad performances in that second half. Appreciate you all the time, Paulie. Thanks for being in touch. Hopefully see you soon.
[00:26:39] Michael said, compelled to write after listening to the post-game Brisbane live stream, where I heard some permanent points. Some of those ones were, I now agree with Clinton. This squad has peaked. I'm frustrated with the lack of discipline and from the same players who should know better. You do say that Iro, Braley and AFB have been a success this year. I'm still team Fitz. He's all in with this club on and off the field and he's still the right man for the job.
[00:27:08] There are some selection mysteries, but you can only replace players with someone who is better and that's not always the case. I'm still team Nico. We expect so much from him and yes, he could do better, but plenty of players on more money than him are not putting in at other clubs. Again, who else is better at the club to replace him? I watch him closely off the ball. He does plenty of other good things. You can't rely on one man so heavily every game. Other players need to help and deliver.
[00:27:37] Trindle has not set the world on fire this year. We're stuck with the majority of this playing roster until the end of 26. Unless there is a major shift in performance, we need to suck it up. On their day they can be great and beat anyone. I think this year is bottom half of the eight and then we jag a win in week one. Who knows? We all ride the roller coaster, strap in for the next 18 months and hope for some astute signings and selected releases in the near future. Up, up. That's from Michael.
[00:28:05] He also says bring on NRLW and you bet we're bringing on the NRLW. Thanks Michael. Some great points there and a lot of that I agree with. I don't know about the sucking it up part though. I think that we need to want and expect better than what we're getting. So, I personally still think that they can achieve things with this squad this year. I'm not sure about in two years time, but this year. But they need a serious adjustment.
[00:28:34] So, how you get that? Andrew's been in touch and Andrew has said that he's been traveling a lot this year to see the team play. He wanted to be a part of the winning year like 2016, but it's not going so great. Quite critical of the coach. He says, I've heard people blaming Niko for three years now. I think he's a six, not a seven, but it's not his fault. It's the rotation. Why not start with Colquhoun at 13, Cam at 14 as the utility?
[00:29:03] Fitzy just doesn't seem to change anything. I don't know who's better out there and I was happy when we got him, but I've lost faith. That is from Andrew and we've been messaging a bit back and forth. Appreciate you Andrew very much. Thanks for tuning into the show. I appreciate everyone who's been in touch. I know things are pretty down at the moment. Thanks for the support of the show.
