[00:00:00] SharkCast! SharkCast!

[00:00:02] SharkCast! SharkCast!

[00:00:08] Safina tries to crash his way over, he does! Safina got the ball over the line!

[00:00:15] And to all you people back in the Shire, turn your points lights off because we're coming home with a trophy!

[00:00:30] Hey there, welcome to SharkCast, part of a podcast dedicated to the greatest sporting club in the history of the world, the mighty Cronulla Southland Sharks.

[00:00:38] This show is brought to you by Dyson Logistics, the Royal Motor Yacht Club in Port Hacking, and Jason Hawes at Crips and Crips Real Estate.

[00:00:46] My name is Sam Shinazian, OG from 2015. Of course I've been watching this team for a lot longer than that, but that's when our podcast started.

[00:00:54] Back in the day with myself and Adam Newman, been flying solo for a couple of years now. When I say solo,

[00:01:00] got the best in the business with a whole bunch of regular co-hosts who you've come to know and hopefully like.

[00:01:07] Today my guests will be three Cronulla Sharks. We interviewed Teeq Wilton, Captain Teeq Wilton, Jack Williams,

[00:01:18] and the quietly spoken, often not speaking, Britton Nickerer. Three really good interviews that I hope you stick around for.

[00:01:27] Amaral is going to get through some of your mail as well. So short week this week, as you all know,

[00:01:35] short turnarounds and it makes podcasting a little bit more, not difficult but a bit more harder to plan

[00:01:43] with the short turnarounds. There are no promises in this world, but I'm hoping to do a

[00:01:48] preview episode with a special guest in the next 24 depending on that person's availability.

[00:01:56] So see what happens there, but this episode myself, some Cronulla Sharks popping in and out of the

[00:02:01] conversation and your mail is what we're going to get through as well. Just on last week,

[00:02:08] obviously a very disappointing loss, 42-0 against Penrith. We covered it a bit in the post-game

[00:02:16] review with Gary Dover and myself and some technical issues, but there is a whole episode

[00:02:21] there if you'd listen to if you want to go back and feel that depressing, melancholic

[00:02:29] shade of blue that we all felt after that game, probably shade of black more than blue.

[00:02:34] Having spoken to the players today and you'll hear it for yourself,

[00:02:39] they're pretty keen to get on and away from that game, which you can't blame them because

[00:02:43] it was just horrendous. There were some things though watching the game back,

[00:02:48] a lot of the tries were tries they could have easily stopped. The tries from kicks were very

[00:02:53] soft, couple of others around the rock, there were only a few tries where their defensive line

[00:02:57] really fell apart. So I think they're positives that they're going to take. I think also just

[00:03:03] they're going to have to deal with being up for so long. They're up for seven weeks, including

[00:03:08] the two high profile wins and then we come around to Penrith. They're going to have to

[00:03:13] learn how to maintain that. Obviously the game was circumstantial. Nikko Heinz went off pretty

[00:03:18] early on with the HIA which turned into the calf issue. So there were things there which

[00:03:25] we can improve on, no excuses, but maybe the 42-0 isn't as bad in hindsight when you think

[00:03:32] about all these things. Not a great performance, I'm not trying to shade over it by any means,

[00:03:39] but I think I've come a little bit away from the ledge that was Saturday night.

[00:03:44] Having said that, looking at some of the stats, they ran for almost a thousand meters

[00:03:50] more than us, a thousand. They busted twice as many tackles. We missed twice as many tackles.

[00:03:56] They had almost 400 more post-contact meters, four times the offloads. We didn't have a line

[00:04:02] break in the game which is the first time in a long time that this Fitzgibbon team has not made

[00:04:07] a line break. Five line breaks to nil. They completed at 42 or 48. We completed at 23 of 32,

[00:04:14] but even that 23 of 32 as bad as that is, that makes us look good compared to what it was

[00:04:18] in reality on the night in the moment. Tackled in the opposition 20, we had 17 tackles. They had a

[00:04:26] 55, so that also is not a great stat. As I said, missed 48 tackles to their 21, 15 errors

[00:04:37] and just a not good night for the entire team. Even if you want to look at the

[00:04:42] player stats, they're not amazing, but if you wanted to, Jesse Ramian led in meters with 123.

[00:04:49] Our props together don't even get close to 100 meters together and it goes on and on and there's

[00:04:55] reasons why. I mean we didn't have the ball much. Things like that, we were tackling so

[00:04:59] much. I'm not having a go at anyone here. It was more to the team effort of not going

[00:05:03] that good. However, we're gonna move on and we have Parramatta on a short turnaround

[00:05:10] this week. The team has been named. As I said, our guest today, Teeq Wilton, is captain for the

[00:05:18] first time, which is awesome. So Thursday night, 7 50 p.m at Combank Stadium in Parramatta,

[00:05:25] we travel out there. The Sharks team, Will Kennedy, Sione Katoa, Jesse Ramian, Gail Itero,

[00:05:32] Ronaldo Milutalo are your backs, your halves. Dan Atkinson, Brayden Trindle returns. Brayden

[00:05:40] Trindle to start the game. The front row is tall Tom Hazleton, Blake Braley and Oregon Gaffussi.

[00:05:48] The back row is Britton Nickerer, Teeq Wilton and Jack Williams will lock your scrum.

[00:05:53] So your entire back row is going to be appearing on this show today talking to us. I

[00:05:57] didn't realize that at the time. Bench is Sifatallakei. Toby Rudolph returns. Royce Hunt

[00:06:04] and Brayden Hamlin-Welley returns. Extended bench of Mawini Haroti,

[00:06:10] Tukuha Tapua, Billy Burns, Nifa Paru and Jaden Beryl. Now whether there's a movement on

[00:06:18] that bench, I don't know at this stage. Toby, I believe, is good to go. Hamlin-Welley has

[00:06:25] been named. I have no reason to think he won't be good to go. We'll see how that

[00:06:31] eventuates, but that bench is actually rock solid if they're fit. Tallakei, Rudolph,

[00:06:37] Hunt and Hamlin-Welley. I don't mind that at all. Opposition, and we're not going to be

[00:06:41] dissecting this game too much in this episode, but Opposition, Para Mata. Clint Gaffesson

[00:06:46] returns. They've got Sivo and Simonson on the wings. Penicini and Russell in the centers.

[00:06:55] Dylan Brown and Mitchell Moses are your halves for Para Mata. Mitch Moses is back.

[00:07:02] Regan Campbell-Gillard, Brendan Hands and Junior Paolo are your front row for the Eels.

[00:07:09] I keep saying your, their front row, not ours. So Brendan Hands to be hooker there.

[00:07:16] Tuolagi, cut right. Offengao is the back row. Immediate bench is Blaise Tlaaghi.

[00:07:23] The young promising back. Sean Lane, Makatoa and Greg are going to be the immediate bench

[00:07:30] for the Eels. Extended bench of Arcee Harper, Lusik Ryan Madison and Luca Moretti. So a very

[00:07:40] close to near full strength team assign from Jermaine Hopgood who's playing rep footy.

[00:07:45] But the obvious returns of Clinton Gaffesson and Mitch Moses. And I think

[00:07:51] that is a concern for the Sharks because we would have preferred to play them without them.

[00:07:57] So it's going to be even tougher, but this is the cards we're dealt and we've got to

[00:08:02] go there and win the game. What we're going to do right now is throw to the first interview,

[00:08:08] which is Jack Williams. Jack Williams was kind enough to talk to us and we get through

[00:08:14] a number of subjects as you can imagine. I hope you enjoy the chat. This is Jack Williams.

[00:08:18] Jack Williams, welcome back to the show. You're in killer form. We spoke to you a year ago. We

[00:08:25] asked you to unleash the beast. The beast is unleashed. How do you feel about your current form?

[00:08:30] It hasn't been too bad. I've been getting some quality minutes and it's been decent actually.

[00:08:35] So I feel like I've got some good combos with a few of the other middles and everything.

[00:08:38] And yeah, first 11 or 12 games was good apart from last week. So yeah,

[00:08:44] we were happy and definitely keen to keep it going.

[00:08:47] Can you tell us what happened last week in your opinion?

[00:08:50] I thought we prepped really well. I think it was just probably mentally maybe a little

[00:08:54] bit complacent. Not really too sure, but yeah, it was a lesson for us and yeah,

[00:08:58] we're looking to bounce back this week. Tell me about the lessons. What can you take

[00:09:02] out of it? I think it's just pressure and

[00:09:04] yeah, trying to keep it on other teams. They did exactly what we wanted to do to them and

[00:09:09] they nailed it for 80 minutes where we probably only did it probably for maybe a

[00:09:13] minute or two. And the stats show that I think we had maybe 30% of the ball and it was all

[00:09:17] combinated yards so yeah, it was frustrating but yeah, we'll learn from it.

[00:09:22] Short turnaround. How does that feel on the body for a guy like you?

[00:09:27] It's tough at the start of the week, but yeah, I think it's good especially coming off

[00:09:30] of a loss. I think it's good to be able to flush the last result and then

[00:09:33] get back in there and make amends for what we just did.

[00:09:36] What are you thinking about Parramatta? I mean they've got some guys coming back we think.

[00:09:40] How are we going to beat them? Yeah, they're definitely quality,

[00:09:42] but I think we can try and beat them through the middle. That's been our go-to and

[00:09:45] I think our guys at the back there, back five have been flying through the middle,

[00:09:49] getting our set started really well and then us guys in the middle can come in there or

[00:09:52] if we don't get a carry we just back end our day and start trying to keep

[00:09:57] in their own end. So I think that's probably something that we can try to get back into.

[00:10:00] It's been working for us the last couple of weeks and yeah, we'll definitely try

[00:10:03] and implement that. We were on a hell of a run before last week. Tell us about

[00:10:08] how it felt like the games against Melbourne and the Rooshers in particular.

[00:10:11] That must have had you guys feeling pretty confident.

[00:10:14] Yeah, we were pumped. I mean the mood is always good when you win but

[00:10:17] I think when we're coming into our own there and we're starting to win against

[00:10:20] those top four teams, the outside noise is probably motivating us a bit too.

[00:10:25] We were able to try and block it out but you always hear it so

[00:10:28] to get those two wins away as well was also awesome and yeah,

[00:10:32] the vibe around training is just really good and as last week obviously wasn't the best,

[00:10:37] we want to bring that back so this week we're definitely looking forward to and

[00:10:41] hoping to get a win. What did the coach say?

[00:10:44] Yeah, he was disappointed but I mean he can probably see more positive

[00:10:48] to the game than we can. So I think he wanted to keep a few things like our line integrity

[00:10:53] as they scored a lot of tries. I think our line was pretty good. They had a few

[00:10:56] kick tries and yeah, just want to try and keep that and then obviously there's a lot

[00:11:00] to work on. So not a lot to work on. More so bring back what we were already doing

[00:11:05] the last couple of weeks. So yeah, but he's been good to be able to flush it for us and

[00:11:10] get us back onto the next task at hand so we're looking forward to it.

[00:11:14] What can you tell us about your contract situation?

[00:11:16] Not too sure to be honest. I've had a bit of a chat and yeah, I think we're keen

[00:11:21] to stay in everything. So yeah, that's good for me to hear but

[00:11:26] I'm just looking forward to that September-October period where we're playing

[00:11:29] finals 40. So that's the end goal at the moment and what I'm focused on,

[00:11:33] what the team's focused on. But what comes with that is the week to week process of

[00:11:37] taking down the opposition and obviously grow on what we're trying to build. So

[00:11:41] yeah, that's all my focus is on at the moment. So just trying to win.

[00:11:45] We've asked you about music before. I've got a different question for you.

[00:11:47] One of our listeners wants to know if anyone in the top 30 current

[00:11:52] is into heavy metal at all? Can you help me out with that at all? Does anyone come to mind?

[00:11:56] Heavy metal? I've heard Brad Newellie listen to a bit.

[00:12:02] Yeah?

[00:12:02] Drops a little bit. We've got a pretty good diverse bit of music that comes out in the

[00:12:07] gym every now and then.

[00:12:08] I was thinking Jaden Barrell maybe.

[00:12:11] Nah, I haven't heard him actually on the speaker to be honest but

[00:12:16] yeah, there's everything. We get everything in there so

[00:12:19] I don't know who chucks it up but it comes up every now and then.

[00:12:21] You think maybe Newellie every now and then?

[00:12:23] Yeah, I think he's the one who pops it out every now and then.

[00:12:25] We'll keep chasing it. Thanks for your time.

[00:12:27] Thank you.

[00:12:27] Thanks brother.

[00:13:11] It's on the last of times and he's going to go to the air again and oh

[00:13:22] All right back from a short break and that was Jack Williams who you heard from before.

[00:13:27] Great to chat with Jack again.

[00:13:30] Going to get through some mail and then we'll get to some more interviews.

[00:13:34] First up is from Sean. This is a slightly older bit of correspondence but I will make it modern.

[00:13:40] He said nice to meet you recently and just commenting on some of the combinations and

[00:13:47] plays at the moment. You see the Brailley-McKinnis combo is truly elite and may rival Cook and Murray

[00:13:53] when they're on top. When McKinnis sniffs a gap and shoots up the middle and Blake gets the

[00:13:58] pass timing spot on and then McKinnis executes a quick play the ball. The play is a strike weapon.

[00:14:04] It's a long shot Bailey's pick for origin in this series but these two up the middle would

[00:14:09] look great. He said Ronnie's becoming a game breaker. I look forward to the left attack

[00:14:13] getting better. Not sure if the tries leak there Ronnie's fault or the inside defenders

[00:14:18] but it needs work. I commented to you previously on the possibility of moving

[00:14:22] Iroh to the right in place of Jesse and your ire at it was well founded. It was a hypothetical

[00:14:29] speculation but your permission do find me in the ET stand and place a well-timed knee to my

[00:14:34] unmentionables on that bad thought. I've got mixed thoughts on Atkinson but for now I'd

[00:14:39] like him to have the chance to hold his spot as they can only get better. He and Nick

[00:14:43] O'Hines. Braden should earn it back or Daniel lose it. I suspect his kicking game is superior

[00:14:50] to Trindle's but I need to rewatch. Thanks for the pod up up Sean. Yeah I'm not sure about the

[00:14:55] who's got the better kicking game. I know that Atkinson's kicking game in general

[00:14:59] is a lot better than I originally thought it was but one of Trindle's strengths is

[00:15:04] his kicking game so that'll be interesting this weekend to see how they share it

[00:15:08] and see how they go. Thanks heaps for being in touch Sean. Always great to hear from you.

[00:15:13] David's been in touch and said long time between messages.

[00:15:16] Just listening to your latest episode with Kieran on the way from Cronulla to Penrith.

[00:15:21] Interesting points made by Kieran regarding superstitions. I've been a season ticket holder

[00:15:25] for a number of years only missing one season in 2016. I don't remember the reason

[00:15:31] but it worked out pretty well. 2024 rolled around. I didn't auto renew. January, February

[00:15:38] came and went. Working long hours. It got forgotten. Round one arrives and no season ticket.

[00:15:44] I'll do it next week. By the time I was actually able to get to a game we were on a bit of a

[00:15:48] run and I liked where we were headed. I made the decision that having a season ticket was the

[00:15:53] reason we haven't won since. What should I do? Renew and cause a loss or hold out with

[00:16:00] visions of 2016 coming. Cheers from David. David you know what to do. You don't have to

[00:16:05] have my answer or my blessing. You know what to do. Team first my friend. Thanks for being in

[00:16:10] touch. Don't be such a stranger and great to hear from you. Peter says not a great night

[00:16:16] to be a shark. The Sorensen second half try did it for me. At least four sharks players

[00:16:20] watched that ball bounce and he strolled on through. Very disappointing. Having said that,

[00:16:25] a reality check never hurt anyone. On to next week up up from Pete. Yeah look as I said in

[00:16:31] the first segment there were a couple of soft tries in particular that I know the coach circled

[00:16:38] and made them watch and ask what the heck happened but also wrote that off as something

[00:16:47] we can easily fix and I think that that's a positive that we need to focus on. The 42-nil

[00:16:52] score line is horrendous. Second worst at Shark Park ever but if you think about it in blocks

[00:16:58] of the game and try scored it probably should have been a lot less. Thanks Peter. Danny says

[00:17:05] disappointing game brings us back down to earth. I can't help but feel a player like

[00:17:11] Adan Faneuwe Blake would have made a huge difference last night. We weren't making meters

[00:17:16] and our usual outside backs were powerless. Only Hunt and Talekai looked to get meters.

[00:17:23] I was just disappointed such a big game came along and the boys crumbled.

[00:17:28] Where to next against the Eels? Two weeks ago we were in by 40 now we just need to win to

[00:17:32] get our mojo back. It'll be about completions and defense. We need to be clinical. With my

[00:17:36] earlier statement of AFB being a difference do we move heaven and earth to get him here now?

[00:17:42] Yes we do. I'll be at the para game and look forward to getting back to business.

[00:17:46] Thanks and up up that's from Danny. Look as I said the other night on one of the shows

[00:17:53] the AFB thing's not happening and if it changes and there's egg on my face then so be it. But

[00:18:00] the mail I have right now whether they want to or not Adan Faneuwe Blake will not be a shark

[00:18:06] this year. Anything's possible things change but right now and that's not like a hint for it

[00:18:12] might happen right now I'm being told it's not happening. So take that how you like which

[00:18:19] is not good if you want him here now so but I wouldn't be relying on that and I think you're

[00:18:24] right I think that completions and defense and being clinical against the Eels are going to

[00:18:29] get a long way to us winning the game on Thursday night. Hope you have fun out there.

[00:18:33] James says I don't know what to make of that loss you could see from the very beginning

[00:18:38] they were not up for it. I can handle a loss but 42-0 is another level. We've now

[00:18:43] considered 76 points in two games so perhaps the talk of having the best defense is somewhat

[00:18:48] premature. Let's hope we can move past this and win another seven in a row. Jimmy from Ireland.

[00:18:53] Hey Jimmy thanks so much for being in touch thanks for listening from so far away we appreciate

[00:18:57] it. Yeah 76 points in two games is not good my friend and I'm sure that has been addressed

[00:19:03] by the coach. One loss in those two games but I've been told by a few people that the 30

[00:19:09] points scored against us in the roosters win isn't a good thing it's quite negative yada

[00:19:15] I don't know what to make of that because you win however you need to win

[00:19:19] and the roosters attack has been very very good so to concede 30 against the roosters but win

[00:19:26] I'm probably not going to lose sleep over that. I think the coach might have I'm not going to

[00:19:31] that's not my job. Paul says I'll say Parramatta should be very concerned this week

[00:19:38] notwithstanding the errors which were very basic and shouldn't have happened

[00:19:41] we lack the ability to defend them which we've been doing for the most part this year

[00:19:46] well I don't believe the intent was to lose that game it does feel that Fitzee has found

[00:19:51] their limits. Gaffussi and Tall Tom have been getting big minutes and they both look flat

[00:19:56] and out of gas pretty quickly against the Panthers. The first try though are both at

[00:20:00] marker and slow to react. Yeah that's true I mean no one's really talking about that much

[00:20:04] Paul but if you watch that first try it's both props are at fault. I did have some good chats

[00:20:10] after the game with some people who know the club and the game really well and they were

[00:20:16] suggesting to me that both starting props might need a bit of a spell moving forward

[00:20:22] particularly Tall Tom Haderson which I don't know if I agree with yet or not but I can

[00:20:26] see the merits in what they're saying just that he's been on and up for so long in such

[00:20:31] a short career. Might need to peel her back a bit but we'll see how that goes. Paul says

[00:20:35] there was one try which is unforgivable and that was the Sorensen try. This game might

[00:20:39] prove valuable in the long run. Lots of games still to come. Up up cheers Paul.

[00:20:44] Thanks Paul, wise words appreciate it. Our good friend RCB has written to us.

[00:20:49] Hard what to make of it all on Saturday. I thought they were all flat. I thought they

[00:20:53] were all pretty bad. They made poor errors compounded with listless backpedaling defence

[00:20:59] and it was over at 12-0 conceding those tries the way we did. It had the look. Throw

[00:21:05] back to last year's real bad performances. I completely agree with you RCB. I thought at 12-0

[00:21:10] that was not a good indication of where the game was going to go and I'm with you with

[00:21:15] how they looked. They looked really flat to put it no other way. He said I think this

[00:21:21] week was the first week we really missed ULE and Toby. Hazel and Caffuzzi got battered by

[00:21:28] the Panthers and their freak show middles. They also came to the point to prove. You

[00:21:34] could see how fired up they were to smash us. What was pleasing if anything was they held fairly

[00:21:39] tough in the second half albeit letting in two preventable kick tries. The Panthers were

[00:21:43] unrelenting and showed why their three-time premiers they had the ball the whole half.

[00:21:47] The only thing you do is look at this performance, take from it what you can,

[00:21:51] learn and then play the eels on Thursday and lift the intensity.

[00:21:55] That's from RCB. Thank you my friend. Hope you're well. Hard to dispute or disagree

[00:22:01] with anything you've said. Not that's what I'm here to do but I agree with kind of everything

[00:22:06] you say and it's a good point about the second half they did stick pretty strong

[00:22:10] despite that scoreline 42-0. The damage was done in the first half, second half

[00:22:16] they did have all the ball and we only sort of let in two kick tries. I don't know

[00:22:21] was there another one? Maybe not so not as bad as what it could have been that's for sure.

[00:22:26] Evan's been in touch and he was listening to the Monday podcast from last week. I should say

[00:22:33] apologies there hasn't been a Monday Catching Up With Kieran episode this week because he's

[00:22:39] away, he's away for work so we couldn't get that one done. So I got to rest the old voice

[00:22:44] box and he got to go travel for work so we're back into that I imagine this week coming see

[00:22:51] how we go but Evan was listening to last week's episode Catching Up With Kieran over copy about

[00:22:58] Cronulla and the shark of the week was spoiler Dustin Cooper. Well done Evan. Ryan sent a

[00:23:06] photo of Kyle Eero and he's on a list of 2025 outside backs off contract. He's at the top

[00:23:14] of the list and he said can we sign this block up please? No mail on that yet but

[00:23:20] I imagine they're working on it. This is from an account called Worldwide. Apologies if I've

[00:23:26] got the name and saying it wrong or whatever but this is from Worldwide. Love the podcast

[00:23:31] and the platform you provide thank you very much. 37th minute I was sniffing a try,

[00:23:36] ground announcer starts yelling sharkies over the ear piercing PA and tuku drops the ball.

[00:23:42] It seems every time the announcer did this he put pressure on our players and the communication

[00:23:47] from our back lumps seemed streamed. If we can learn anything from the NFL why don't we do

[00:23:51] the shark chant in defense and apply pressure on the opposing attack? You'd get a beer thrown

[00:23:57] at your head in the US if you were in the crowd making noise when the home quarterback

[00:24:01] is trying to make an attacking play it makes no sense. This is this is a remarkable piece

[00:24:05] of correspondence thank you Worldwide and you're completely right and I don't know why

[00:24:09] I've never thought of that but when you go to NFL games or if you're watching on the

[00:24:13] telly and you're in the home crowd it's kind of not that noisy when they're doing attacking plays.

[00:24:19] Defense oh yeah defense you get the sign with a D and the fence beautiful. I might need to pass

[00:24:25] this one on to the sharks administration let them know what's going on thanks so much for

[00:24:30] being in touch. Good friend of the show Paul said I honestly don't know what to make about

[00:24:34] what I've just watched my reply to you was not pretty and I stand by that. BrownSnake750

[00:24:40] said call me a sick man shanaz but something about that loss felt nostalgic reminds me of the

[00:24:47] 2000s and early 2010s up the sharkies to which I replied you're a sick man. He said we'll be

[00:24:54] fine this is exactly the same as the Tigers loss. I blame Kieran Fraser for talking about

[00:25:00] grand final tickets and I said me too. H man was in touch great man H man got to sit with

[00:25:06] him during the game last week. Michael says my mail of the week the less said about the

[00:25:11] Panthers game the better we got killed for our mistakes and they schooled us onto more important

[00:25:15] issues has anyone tried the golden bay Asian yet and the Billy Key chicken on the menu.

[00:25:23] Kingwan memories live on I have to go it may need to be a shark cast pod banquet one night.

[00:25:28] Well Michael do not tempt me my friend passion I feel for Chinese food is real. We were right

[00:25:34] opposite the restaurant watching the game watching the restaurant more intently and we

[00:25:41] had lots of ideas and all the ideas we talked about on the next episode but as you know there

[00:25:46] were tech issues and we cut out a lot of it but basically the idea I think it was my idea

[00:25:51] because I remember telling TK about it but the idea was there needs to be a elevator system

[00:25:56] where you order your Chinese food from the ground at a point in the ground you move to a

[00:26:02] spot and they lower down the Chinese food in a you know in a box for you or whatever

[00:26:07] and you can eat Chinese food in the ground while watching the mighty sharks. That's if

[00:26:13] you can't make it to the restaurant I believe a number of our listeners were watching the game

[00:26:19] they were pretty quick to book a table I think a little while ago watching the game having

[00:26:24] a banquet and I believe it eased a lot of the pain which I could imagine so I'll be

[00:26:31] heading down there as soon as I can Michael and I would dare say after that time and time and

[00:26:36] time again great stuff though isn't it having a Chinese restaurant back on the precinct in the

[00:26:43] precinct whatever the correct terminology is. Okay let's throw now to the second interview

[00:26:50] I did which was with Britton Nickera and Britton is a guy who really doesn't like doing

[00:26:54] press I know he has a soft spot for the podcast so he was more than happy to talk to us

[00:27:01] it was quite amusing watching him trying to evade the people that I work for Fox Sports

[00:27:08] and their media requests and he did it and you'll see it on TV and he's I'm sure he killed it

[00:27:14] he just doesn't like the idea of stepping in front of the camera but so here is Britton Nickera

[00:27:22] All right Shark House Pod here with Britton Nickera now we know you don't like to talk

[00:27:27] on camera but we're off camera it's our second interview with you we're going to get to the

[00:27:31] hard stuff first what happened on Saturday? Obviously disappointing loss and

[00:27:39] yeah obviously the week was good leading up to the game and I think we just yeah we're

[00:27:43] just a bit off in the game and we can't do that against a team like that they make you pay

[00:27:48] and that's what happened on the weekend. What was it like out there was it just carnage

[00:27:53] was it hard to sort of get back into your systems? Yeah a little bit of both

[00:28:00] obviously we went out there and like we trained for situations like that and

[00:28:05] yeah we just obviously didn't bounce back out of it but yeah we sort of just looking

[00:28:11] forward to this weekend and it's good that we got a five-day turnaround we can look

[00:28:14] forward to our paramatter and hopefully put a better performance on there and get back to

[00:28:19] how we've been all year. What did the coach have to say? He was just disappointed I guess

[00:28:24] like everyone else was in the shed and he knows that's not us and we know that's not us and

[00:28:30] the seven weeks before that we that's where we want to get back to this weekend.

[00:28:34] What was it like on that seven match winning streak particularly against the storm and the

[00:28:38] roosters like unbelievable performances like you know top 10 top 20 club wins of all time

[00:28:45] it must have been pretty good feeling amongst the crew? Yeah it was obviously winning is always

[00:28:50] good and obviously against teams like that going down to Melbourne and playing them down there

[00:28:54] it's always a hard game and obviously had Nico in that out that game and yeah it was just

[00:28:59] obviously good to get the win there and it's yeah it's been good other than the

[00:29:03] weekend just went and yeah we're just looking forward to getting back to those performances.

[00:29:07] Brett can you tell me about the Melbourne game in particular? I know Nico we had

[00:29:11] Jack Williams named at seven, Cam McInnes playing there, Blake three out. What was the game plan

[00:29:18] with when it's all so disorientated? Yeah it was obviously everyone a few people out of

[00:29:23] position and all that type of stuff but Fitsy always says just doing the hardest things of

[00:29:28] the game and that's run hard and tackle hard and pushing with your mates and just doing all

[00:29:32] the simple stuff and that's what we sort of done that game and yeah we just we didn't

[00:29:38] really try and play nothing too fancy we just sort of just stuck to the hard

[00:29:43] hard bits of the game and I think we got that right and that's how we got the result.

[00:29:47] How are we going to beat Para? We just need to focus on us and what we can bring in,

[00:29:52] what we've been bringing for the past seven weeks before this the week they just went

[00:29:56] and just focus on that and focus on our footy. One last question we know what sort of music

[00:30:00] you're into we had a listener write in to us and he asked if any of the boys are into

[00:30:06] heavy metal specifically now Jack Williams said maybe Hamlin Welly a little bit. Do you

[00:30:11] know any of the guys that listen to heavy metal however you want to define heavy metal?

[00:30:15] Heavy metal nah not really but yeah I think even maybe Jack and Embrace maybe a bit of

[00:30:22] Hazo maybe but um yeah I don't think too many other boys are into it. There's no

[00:30:28] wrong answer. I'm not too sure though they could be they could be closet yeah yeah so

[00:30:35] we'll keep chasing hey thanks for your time and kill them on Thursday. Thanks Britt.

[00:31:54] Okay that was Britt and Nick are talking very honestly about the form of the sharks and

[00:32:02] where we've been when we're going great to chat with Britt. Can you get through a little bit more

[00:32:07] mail now and then we will take you out with Captain T Wilton and some really strong

[00:32:12] wise words from him. So this is from Steve he said disappointed with the sharks they win all

[00:32:18] these games then this one is there and they get their noses rubbed in it against a team.

[00:32:22] I still believe at average this year we should have been up we played worse than any

[00:32:28] other game all year. The critics are starting to believe we're not contenders now saying we

[00:32:33] were lucky but I don't care what they say but I do care how we play and this is the start of

[00:32:39] a downhill slide just like the rabbits last season from first to ninth. I no longer have

[00:32:44] confidence in this side it was a pathetic effort I hope we don't get any players in origin

[00:32:51] or we'll get done against the eels. All the praise has bloated their heads we'll not win

[00:32:56] the Premiership the issue and be lucky to finish top two yet alone top four. Any Premiership

[00:33:01] contender never gets beaten by that score. Sad times ahead unless you get the defense fixed

[00:33:06] now what defense though? That's from Steve. Steve man that's um that's pretty dramatic

[00:33:12] and I'm not I'm gonna try and not be rude or disrespectful to you but uh I don't agree

[00:33:18] with a lot of that. I mean it's very easy to jump off a team at 42-0 but it's pretty quick

[00:33:26] for someone to jump back on them and I think you want to be a person that just stays with them

[00:33:31] because as I've said a few times and and I think one of the other guys might have said

[00:33:36] it in the interviews a couple those tries from the kicks not pretty to watch very avoidable.

[00:33:43] The first two tries came from our errors there's there's reasons why we lost 42-0

[00:33:48] and they are fixable. The energy enthusiasm is something that they need to

[00:33:55] bring about themselves they were out enthused in that game it's clear to see

[00:33:59] so I'm not here to make excuses but I think what you're saying about the slide and the

[00:34:04] South Sydney reference I don't agree with any of that there was so much politics behind South

[00:34:09] Sydney becoming the last place team it's not it wasn't so much about the way they played

[00:34:15] and why they played that way there was a whole lot more going on there so I think it's a very

[00:34:18] unfair comparison. I don't agree that we're going to slip all the way down that way I think that

[00:34:25] I think we'll be in a battle to to stay top two but still at my own top four I haven't given

[00:34:31] up on the minor premiership to be perfectly blunt I mean I understand what we saw last week

[00:34:37] was as you say very disappointing but it's one game and we've got the eels this week going

[00:34:43] to be super tough super tough we're missing guys they got guys back but it's a long season

[00:34:49] I just think that anytime we lose a game and we've lost two all year a lot of people

[00:34:55] get really really upset and I understand that I wasn't sitting there smiling and carrying on

[00:35:00] during the game except for the bit about the Chinese restaurant but I just think that this team

[00:35:06] is too good to throw that away I think the coaching staff is too good to throw that away

[00:35:11] are we going to have more losses sure is it going to be against Parramatta I hope not but

[00:35:17] we're still on track here let's not freak out in the great words of George Costanza

[00:35:23] so everybody stay calm here coming first so appreciate your listening Steve appreciate you

[00:35:28] writing in I just don't agree with the sort of the dramatic tone and I mean that respectfully

[00:35:34] my man so don't be offended by that Brent says just home from that game if you want to call it

[00:35:41] a game unhappy about the results the players let themselves down the refereeing was atrocious

[00:35:47] but that's another story the whole team was outplayed and didn't look like a team coming

[00:35:52] first it's unfair for us fans who spend money to watch them play to see a performance like

[00:35:57] that they let themselves down let the club down mostly let the fans down who come out

[00:36:02] and support them each week to see a performance like that and no matter who we play it's

[00:36:06] unacceptable I was starting to think with a real deal but they fooled everyone into believing

[00:36:10] that they just showed they can't play to the expectation against the Panthers until they

[00:36:15] learn to play them at their own game they'll never be able to beat them we should have come

[00:36:20] out and ambush them but instead they did that to us it's embarrassing and it hurts not to

[00:36:25] score a point and Brent goes on in similar tones like that we could have gone four points

[00:36:31] up or six points clear the Panthers but now it's only two points of both them and the storm let's

[00:36:36] try and turn it around and start another run up up so I'm glad you got there to the positivity

[00:36:41] at the end Brent I obviously very disappointed on your point about the fans spending money and

[00:36:45] don't deserve that I mean I agree with you completely but I mean you know buyer beware

[00:36:51] you might see your team lose you might see them lose by 50 it's not planned I have to say

[00:36:57] when I left the stadium on Saturday night I ran into a few players and can tell you that the

[00:37:04] three that I'm thinking of all in the starting 13 they looked very upset they looked very

[00:37:11] despondent they looked slightly embarrassed they looked like they were hurting and so it

[00:37:17] just reminded me that we need to not you know go off too hard too early about things

[00:37:22] and also just need to remember that that whole thing about oh they don't feel they don't feel

[00:37:27] it they just get paid their money I think they do feel it guys and girls I think that they

[00:37:32] feel it and I saw it on Saturday night walking out like these were three players who just they

[00:37:38] looked like they wanted to crawl into a hole and hide and they couldn't because they were

[00:37:44] walking out to their fans and family and friends and it's just a reminder that I don't

[00:37:50] know it's a reminder for me that this is pretty real to those guys so appreciate being in touch

[00:37:56] Brent Jay says I'm not normally on here but after last night I'm very distressed about the

[00:38:03] Sharks when they play the Panthers I know a lot of players are being blamed but they were

[00:38:07] right in that game up until the Catoa knock-on they scored half to five minutes

[00:38:13] they put their heads down they fell apart not signs of a competitive team

[00:38:17] I'm coach in the NRL in a regional area I've been coaching for 15 years and we just got done

[00:38:24] winning our third premiership Jay then mentions a few players that he thinks caused us to lose

[00:38:30] and if you use your imagination you'll work out who they are the Panthers everybody knows

[00:38:34] play up the middle they love playing up the middle teams who have beaten them like the

[00:38:40] Warriors just beat them out wide we never learn how to play the Penrith Panthers they

[00:38:46] kick to our corners they trapped us there Sharks falling into the trap what they should have done

[00:38:52] it was play two or three up the middle and then go wide and move the backs around

[00:38:57] kicking to Edwards was an amateur mistake you target the weakest winger and kick to him every

[00:39:02] time I hope the coach and the players learn from this they need to make it up to the fans

[00:39:06] the club and the many supporters who follow them I'm sick and tired of the coach when he says

[00:39:12] when they lose I'll learn from this they've been saying that for the past two years

[00:39:17] how many more years before they've learned that's just a cop out by the coach saying that

[00:39:21] tough one up concentrate fix it up or live with the tag pretenders and semi-final chokers

[00:39:27] cheers let's go Sharks it's from Jay Jay that's some pretty um intense words there

[00:39:32] appreciate you being in touch I'll tell you what I want to talk about I want to talk about

[00:39:37] you talking about the coach I think they have learnt because they beat Melbourne in Melbourne

[00:39:43] without a spine they beat the Roosters at Magic Round at Suncorp or the Roosters in red hot

[00:39:50] form before that they beat five other teams it's not a fluke on your point about the

[00:39:55] coach saying we'll learn from it yada yada yada you know what you're going to get from

[00:39:59] the coach in the press conferences he's not going to give you a lot that's the way he

[00:40:05] rolls he doesn't want the headlines he doesn't want to put the club in bad terms he doesn't

[00:40:12] like giving away a lot and I respect that like do I want to hear from him after a loss of course

[00:40:17] I do but when you hear people like Ricky Stewart when you hear people like Shane Flanagan

[00:40:25] Dez Hazlitt those kind of more animated coaches and we've had two of the three there

[00:40:31] I just mentioned I don't really get off on some of the drama they go through in those

[00:40:37] in those press conferences a lot of them at times looking out for themselves

[00:40:41] I'd rather the coaches keep it keep it close to his chest and try and fix the situation that's

[00:40:45] just me I understand what you're saying and I respect what you're saying good luck with the

[00:40:51] rest of the year for your team Jay and don't be a stranger please Pat says first time

[00:40:57] messaging despite being a listener since close to the start and want to get your thoughts on

[00:41:01] a few things well first of all thank you so much for being in touch and thanks for listening I

[00:41:06] really appreciate it Pat says in my mind this year has more 2015 vibes than 2016

[00:41:12] clear improvement from the last year next year will bring more improvement with a marquee signing

[00:41:17] taking us to the next level I was extremely disappointed in the Panthers loss starting

[00:41:22] in the game with two errors leading to two tries that would result in a loss to any elite side

[00:41:28] however this game sort of reinforced an idea I've had since the Tigers loss I'm starting

[00:41:32] to think this team can struggle to take the sting out of games when the opposition has a

[00:41:37] role on there seems to be a lack of pragmatism in just trying to slow the game down to a

[00:41:43] grind and disrupt the other team's momentum by kicking them all in touch resetting defense

[00:41:48] I'd be extremely interested to see how we fare in metrics like how often our kicks turn the

[00:41:53] full back around how often kicks are caught in the full by the backs and how often we kick

[00:41:58] into touch when finishing our own set in our own half our current game plan seems to be go toe

[00:42:04] to toe with the opposition and rely on our defense and fitness to win out in the end

[00:42:07] but when the opposition is up for it like the Tigers and Panthers the sharks are too gassed

[00:42:11] from defending and don't have the energy to change the tide up up from Pat that's some

[00:42:15] deep thinking Pat I love it as far as the stats go on things such as turning the full back around

[00:42:23] caught in the full I don't have them in front of me but I think you'll find under Nico Hines a

[00:42:29] lot of the ball goes high and to the full back from those angles close to the sideline

[00:42:38] so they can have a swarming defense run in and try and stop the fullback making meters

[00:42:44] they don't often kick into touch especially because the clock doesn't stop or anything like

[00:42:49] that and there's no scrum from that usually so it's that that sort of idea has changed a bit

[00:42:56] for teams do I think it's 2015 over 2016 I mean before the game on the weekend against

[00:43:02] Penrith I would have said 2016 I really would have I think I did now I don't know I just

[00:43:09] don't know I think the further we get away from the Penrith game from last week the more I think

[00:43:13] about it and the more it adds up that we got walloped and it's not fun or pretty or great to

[00:43:19] think about but as you said and and I think it was Jay before that Katoa drops the ball try

[00:43:28] Jesse drops the ball try 12-0 down it's hard to come back two tries later on in the second

[00:43:35] half from kicks that really shouldn't have been scored that's probably 24 points if he's getting

[00:43:41] the conversions for each one that's 24 points that shouldn't have been scored 42 minus 24 you

[00:43:47] do the math it makes it kind of not as bad we still haven't scored a point but is it 2016

[00:43:54] and 2015 let's wait and see let's wait and see what happens after Thursday night maybe come

[00:44:00] back to me on that question thanks so much for being in touch and for the listening part

[00:44:03] I really appreciate it Brad says pretty disappointing but nobody was beating Penrith tonight

[00:44:07] plain and simple good to have this wake-up call now rather than later in the year we aren't as

[00:44:11] good as we thought we were people need to stop blaming the refs like Trent Robinson uh yeah

[00:44:15] people need to stop blaming the refs but I'll tell you what I thought that the refs were

[00:44:19] pretty lenient against Penrith on the weekend and you know what Penrith are perfect at getting

[00:44:24] away with it they know what they're doing they push it to the limit and we should have been

[00:44:28] doing the same thanks for being in touch Brad appreciate it as always Josh has sent a photo

[00:44:35] from the Pete Burnstand with 20 minutes to go it's pretty empty he says tough pill to swallow

[00:44:42] this is the Pete Burnstand with 20 minutes to go I don't know where we even go from here

[00:44:46] I can cop a loss but 42 nil 16 errors 57 missed tackles all at home ground and all of

[00:44:52] that's come down it's 15 errors I think it was 48 missed tackles I think this is a real opportunity

[00:44:58] to derail the entire season hope I'm wrong this is a dark moment in our history oh boy

[00:45:04] Josh there's some big words dark moment in our history well you know what it's our second

[00:45:08] biggest loss at home that's not good not good dark moment in our history I think if

[00:45:15] we were to slide slide slide slide slide great Google doll song slide I think we would slide

[00:45:22] like the other correspondent wrote in saying like south then there would be a dark moment

[00:45:28] in our history if we can bounce back finish top two top four win some games in the finals

[00:45:35] I don't think it'll be too dark but yeah at the moment that's not that's not outlandish

[00:45:41] I appreciate you being in touch Dan from Dan's jerseys on Instagram said last night was

[00:45:48] miserable on so many levels I'm glad we won two out of three the big games though lately and

[00:45:53] that's a great point imagine if we hadn't oh my gosh now I posted a shark energy drink jersey

[00:46:01] which I think my way from Dan's Instagram not sure and our good friend Lewis wrote to us

[00:46:09] and said may as well slap the shark energy drink on the back of the jersey after last

[00:46:13] night's performance oh boy Joanne says congratulations to Ken McInnes and Nico Hines both deserve

[00:46:20] state of origin selection up up and I agree with you they sure do deserve that well done to them

[00:46:25] thanks for being in touch Joanne I've got a message from the heart of bodyboarding

[00:46:31] for I don't know what this means message from the Port Macquarie shark for the podcast

[00:46:37] I don't know what that means but I'll reply and I'll let you know I don't know what that

[00:46:42] means thank you so much in fact I'm gonna reply on air I don't know what this means sorry

[00:46:51] and hello there you go live podcasting as we as we go now I think that's everything I think

[00:46:57] that's all the mail and that leaves us with one last interview to get through and that's

[00:47:02] from Captain Teague Wilton and Teague's pretty um I think he's pretty fired up for this game

[00:47:07] I sensed that he was he was frustrated between the loss of the weekend and waiting to get back on

[00:47:14] the field on Thursday so I'll be watching Teague rip and tear this week appreciate his and all

[00:47:21] the other players time thanks to club for allowing me the access and we're going to try

[00:47:26] and have a preview episode for you in between now and Thursday it's a short turnaround see how

[00:47:29] we go if it doesn't happen do not hold it against us if it does hope you get to enjoy it

[00:47:35] we'll be potting for you as soon as we can the voice box touchwood seems to be getting back to

[00:47:41] a truer form still a way to go unfortunately but better than it was so appreciate everyone's

[00:47:47] kindness hope everyone's good uh appreciate everyone as per and let's get the w on

[00:47:54] Thursday against power up up let's go here comes Teague Wilton

[00:47:58] Okay, Sharkas Pod here with Teague Wilton. Teague, we're starting these ones with all the boys. What happened on Saturday night?

[00:48:07] It's tough to think about but you got to address it we are definitely just you can't you got to

[00:48:12] honor the laws of the game when you're versed in the premier teams in the comp and that is

[00:48:16] it's no secret it's Penrith and um yeah we didn't do that we uh no ball control didn't

[00:48:21] complete our sets and uh we definitely paid for it on the back end. What's been the feeling

[00:48:25] like since then are you guys past it you're moving on learning from it moving on? Yeah we got a short

[00:48:30] short turnaround this week we're playing Thursday against Parramatta so we've had to

[00:48:34] bank it and move on pretty quickly I think um we got our lessons from it they're pretty

[00:48:39] obvious and glaring so yeah we just look forward to bouncing back from it this week

[00:48:42] and putting in a good performance against Parramatta. Now going to be missing some troops

[00:48:45] due to origin and some other things you've been named captain how does that make you feel?

[00:48:49] Yeah it's definitely a massive honor to step in as captain while those boys are doing their

[00:48:54] role for New South Wales um definitely very proud and uh yeah looking forward to it. How do we beat

[00:49:00] Parramatta? I think um we just got to go back to what works best for us go back to playing our

[00:49:05] footy um we'll put ourselves in a good spot at the start of the year and um yeah we just got

[00:49:11] to be us really. We're still coming first it's it's um it's not doom and gloom it's a hiccup

[00:49:16] we're going to move past it. I want to ask you about the Melbourne game that was

[00:49:20] an unbelievable performance uh I thought starting from the coaches to the players.

[00:49:24] Yeah no it was good it was a great feeling um everyone just sort of

[00:49:28] digged into doing their role for the team and um I think it showed that night and uh we look

[00:49:33] forward to emulating that this week so yeah just everyone just working up for their

[00:49:37] team mate yeah just doing your role. How are you going? Yeah feeling good feeling good um

[00:49:43] yeah and looking forward to another week of uh like I said bouncing back from the

[00:49:47] Penderfoss and yeah putting in a good performance. Awesome thanks for your time and uh good luck.

[00:49:51] No worries thank you. Thank you man appreciate it.
