[00:01:33] Also Friday night, SharkCarsPod listeners enjoying a very very amazing win to the chronol sharks.

[00:01:46] Josh we had 14 tackles in the opposition 20.

[00:01:48] 14 and we got the job done.

[00:01:51] What were your thoughts?

[00:01:52] Oh crazy game.

[00:01:54] After the 20 minutes I thought here we go again another 40 to 6 scrubbing and I think

[00:01:59] the turning point for me was that Will Kennedy one-on-one tackle on the second row or

[00:02:03] the center and I just thought after that I thought we were really into it and I thought

[00:02:07] that that was the kind of thing that we needed and I don't think we make that kind of play

[00:02:11] last year.

[00:02:13] And you could see that the boys got up after that and everyone was really pumped and

[00:02:17] you could see the change in mentality and just super proud of the team.

[00:02:24] The effort that the boys went to was just that's what we've wanted from this Kroekfitz

[00:02:28] given error and I think that's probably the toughest, grittiest win we've done under him.

[00:02:35] Yeah I mean people are asking that all over and there's a few letters about it as well

[00:02:39] but it's hard to think of a tougher win like maybe they're out there and we're not

[00:02:43] remembering them but recent memory I mean just fantastic.

[00:02:48] It kind of had the Fitzgibbon DNA that we all want, definitely him as a player and what

[00:02:54] we know him as a coach and maybe for a while that went missing last year went missing

[00:02:59] on and off.

[00:03:00] We know he finished the year strong.

[00:03:02] I know he would have been absolutely thrilled with the way they won, the way they just held

[00:03:07] on.

[00:03:08] The other thing I love Josh was aside from the defense, they didn't do anything too

[00:03:11] crazy in the last 15-20.

[00:03:13] They were hanging on, it looked like they weren't trying to score points and I don't really

[00:03:17] have a problem with that.

[00:03:18] I think if the opportunity came up they would have gone for it but especially in their own

[00:03:23] yard they were pretty safe and I love that.

[00:03:27] Yeah I think there was a difference between you know when teams just shut up shop and

[00:03:31] are just trying to get through the final 10 or 15 minutes.

[00:03:35] I don't think we were doing it.

[00:03:36] I think we were still struggling to get out of our end and it's a credit to the 10

[00:03:39] of the Warriors who were still playing well defensively they kept us down there and we couldn't

[00:03:42] really get out of our yardage but to me that felt like a semi-final type win and we've

[00:03:49] you know it's of course it's fun to go out and smash teams and put 40 points on.

[00:03:54] But those are the ones that set the standard and now the fact that we've set that standard

[00:03:59] round one against the top four team, you can build off that.

[00:04:03] The attack will come, we know we're an attacking side, that doesn't matter that will come

[00:04:07] with weeks of playing.

[00:04:09] But the defensive attitude and the resilience that needs to be there from day one and the

[00:04:14] fact that it's already there against a really good team, that first 20 minutes from the

[00:04:18] Warriors was you know probably the best 20 minutes of 40 we've seen this year so far in

[00:04:22] round one.

[00:04:24] So it's just something to build off and Fits is going to be hammering that into them now

[00:04:28] that that's the standard we don't go away from that.

[00:04:31] So away from home overseas it's never great whether they're sold out crowd top eight

[00:04:38] team, top four team.

[00:04:40] They were last year.

[00:04:42] Trailing by 12, it ticks all the boxes of the critics and more importantly for the fans

[00:04:48] and the fans are the harshest critics sometimes but it was just an overall really great performance

[00:04:54] I said on one of the shows earlier that if they'd lost in that manner 12, 10 or whatever

[00:05:00] you would still take away a lot from it because you'd be like well they came back, they

[00:05:04] almost did it, it should have been 40 to 6 it wasn't.

[00:05:07] The fact they won was just that icing on the cake like it would this year we're trying

[00:05:13] to do something different and you know from the coaching staffs, the players, the fans

[00:05:18] we all want it.

[00:05:19] We all want the same thing and that's how you do it because in years gone by it was

[00:05:24] like we almost did it on proud of the effort, we'll learn from it.

[00:05:28] That's not enough at all.

[00:05:29] It's true that yeah go win I love that about it and it's only round one I love it

[00:05:32] and I think that it just sets you up for a really nice five weeks of footy.

[00:05:38] Yeah and I think the best part I want to get jumped too far ahead but the challenge this

[00:05:42] week is to maintain that against a lesser opposition, can they do that?

[00:05:46] Can they still have that same commitment and that desire against the team?

[00:05:49] It's not probably going to challenge us as much so I'm looking forward to that.

[00:05:52] Tell me about some of the players who you like.

[00:05:55] Every time I think about this game my brain immediately goes to Teague Wilten every time.

[00:05:58] Really?

[00:05:59] I've watched the game a couple times now and focused on different players and different

[00:06:03] periods of the game.

[00:06:05] I just thought he was fantastic.

[00:06:07] I thought he's some good runs, really good tough runs.

[00:06:10] You know those runs that no one wants to take right on our line you're going to get bashed

[00:06:14] and he put his hand up every single time.

[00:06:16] Him and Sifah couldn't tell you how many times they put their hand up running out from

[00:06:19] our five metre line.

[00:06:20] It's a great point because we're all going on about Sifra and rightly so.

[00:06:25] Teague hasn't got to mention really.

[00:06:27] In my opinion only almost as good, I don't think he was as good but that doesn't matter

[00:06:31] because the other guy was man on the match.

[00:06:33] You're right.

[00:06:34] Teague was really critical and I love the fact he didn't really put a foot wrong.

[00:06:38] No, good return.

[00:06:40] I don't think he might have missed one or two tackles and made 40 odd.

[00:06:44] He was everywhere.

[00:06:46] Tough runs nearly broke the line a couple of times too against lesser opposition.

[00:06:51] He's going to score a lot of tries this year I think.

[00:06:53] He might set up a few to bust into that line back on the inside of the Kennedy.

[00:06:57] I'm really excited and I spoke about it in the preseason.

[00:07:00] I think this is his year that he takes his game to the next level.

[00:07:04] And what 24, 25 years old started in that 60 to 70 game range now too.

[00:07:09] I think he's understanding who he is as a player and how we use him better.

[00:07:12] Look at who he's surrounded by even just in the pack.

[00:07:15] He's got Dale Furniken, Cam McKinnis, Britt and Nicarra are going with the best second

[00:07:19] row of the game.

[00:07:20] Like he's surrounded by good football role models and throwing the more flash guys

[00:07:25] like Nicarra and Herbert.

[00:07:26] He's around really good players.

[00:07:29] That will lift him even further.

[00:07:31] Like if he was playing for a Bulldogs or a Tigers or whatever, he'd be a superstar.

[00:07:37] In our team at the moment based on one game and what it'd known from the past,

[00:07:41] he's just very rock solid and that's what we need from him.

[00:07:44] He upped it already in this one game.

[00:07:46] Yeah.

[00:07:47] I mean, like you said with Britt and Nicarra, our two second rowers defensively just put

[00:07:52] in a massive work.

[00:07:53] I think between them it would have been 80 or 90 tackles maybe potentially.

[00:07:57] And Britt was not a standout but again he just does those little things so well that

[00:08:03] you don't notice on the first watch.

[00:08:05] Just his effort plays on kick chase coming across and helping Nico and Jesse when they needed

[00:08:12] it slid really well to on that edge.

[00:08:15] Like the second row for me were massive standouts.

[00:08:18] For those people who don't watch the game maybe as intensely as what others do, if you

[00:08:24] go into the game on a Friday night as an example, watch a bit of Britt and Nicarra off the

[00:08:29] ball, watch him when nothing amazing is happening when you've got time to watch him.

[00:08:35] And you'll walk away even more impressed than what you probably already are.

[00:08:38] Like he just I think it's scary how good he can become.

[00:08:41] And I think he's already at a certain level.

[00:08:44] He's just so consistent man.

[00:08:46] I said it on the show already but I think he's my number one guy this year.

[00:08:50] And like you said, he's probably still got another level to go and I'm prepared to say

[00:08:55] at the moment and not base off last year, he's probably the best second rower in the

[00:08:58] comp if not the most reliable consistent and that was always his problem in his first

[00:09:05] few years with his consistency.

[00:09:06] Yeah.

[00:09:07] You'd have a lights out game and then he had he do nothing.

[00:09:09] We wouldn't get any meters out of him who wouldn't do the tough work he's doing all

[00:09:12] those things now.

[00:09:13] And that comes with experience and that's why I always say to people you've got to give

[00:09:16] these guys a chance.

[00:09:17] They're not in this team for no reason.

[00:09:19] Fitz wouldn't pick guys that didn't deserve it.

[00:09:21] Just going to give them a chance.

[00:09:23] There was a few meltdowns during the game, we got a few letters which we'll get to and

[00:09:28] the interwebs were heating up a little bit and I understand why like it was not looking

[00:09:32] good.

[00:09:33] I can see that I thought to myself I thought I don't think we can win from here.

[00:09:38] That doesn't look very good but I changed my mind pretty quickly as well to be fair

[00:09:42] and thankfully I hadn't told the whole world about it.

[00:09:46] If I had, oh well life goes on but yeah that's a great example to let the players play for

[00:09:53] 80 minutes and see what happens because yeah they were not looking good.

[00:09:57] I want to ask you why were they not looking good?

[00:09:59] What do you think happened?

[00:10:00] We were just saying off air.

[00:10:01] I think that we were a little maybe shell shocks not the right word but the worries flew

[00:10:06] out of the gates and I think we missed the jump.

[00:10:09] I think Fitz might have mentioned that in his press too that the worries came with so much

[00:10:13] energy, so much leg speed, aggression in defense.

[00:10:18] I just don't think we were quite ready for it.

[00:10:21] I think the boys were definitely up for it but I just think a few areas early on.

[00:10:24] Yeah.

[00:10:25] A little panicky.

[00:10:26] A couple of off-floats from Royce that went to Graham when we needed to hold the ball

[00:10:31] and the ball.

[00:10:32] The worries are a very good football team.

[00:10:33] I think we can't forget that.

[00:10:35] I think for me it was the errors that made it more glaring because from the errors bad

[00:10:40] stuff comes and that was the issue.

[00:10:43] Like I didn't think the opening 20 every second of that 20 minutes was diabolical.

[00:10:48] There were certain signs where I was like okay but those moments turned the game and

[00:10:53] then the warriors do their thing.

[00:10:54] The warriors shut up shut but don't really know what happened from there end but they just

[00:10:57] sort of stopped playing.

[00:10:58] I think our defense was really good as well to be fair.

[00:11:02] I think it's a tremendous victory.

[00:11:04] Talking about changes in players and attitudes, will Kennedy?

[00:11:08] Wow.

[00:11:09] Everyone knows about the one on the line that he stopped in the middle.

[00:11:13] Was it the first half?

[00:11:15] It was going to be 16 nil if he didn't go through it just after.

[00:11:18] The Fnua Blake almost tried.

[00:11:20] Line break, rebumps off Blake a couple of times and then they also catch up to him.

[00:11:26] Kennedy is in there, put his body on the line.

[00:11:27] He threw himself at him.

[00:11:28] He didn't quite get him but he just threw every kilogram he had at him.

[00:11:32] It's so impressive.

[00:11:33] Like from a guy who was noticeably not confident doing that maybe what two years ago, he's

[00:11:40] come so far.

[00:11:41] I think Sam what reflects in that is the change in attitude on his kick returns probably

[00:11:47] a year and a half ago when it gets the ball now you just seem line up and just charge

[00:11:52] into the line and I think there's no coincidence that that has impacted his getting his body

[00:11:57] in front defense which was always a criticism of him defensively.

[00:12:01] We all know how good he is in attack our slickies.

[00:12:03] Was it his first kick return or was one that was unbelievable?

[00:12:08] It was very early and he did one the second half for our members to see where he put

[00:12:12] his head down after he got the ball and just charged like a million miles an hour.

[00:12:16] He would have been absolutely gassed but he did it anyway.

[00:12:19] There is so much to talk about and we've got a big show for everyone.

[00:12:42] I thought Jack will get to him as well.

[00:12:44] I thought he was outstanding.

[00:12:47] It was hard to give a man of the match because I thought Ronaldo and I was very critical

[00:12:52] on this show.

[00:12:53] He was Ronaldo.

[00:12:54] I think it was almost career best.

[00:12:56] Yeah, like I was really worried about preseason.

[00:12:59] I thought he looked a little weak and a little tentative and then for round one he gets back

[00:13:04] up for it and just proves me wrong.

[00:13:06] I think and it's not like us to single anyone out and we actually love this guy.

[00:13:12] He's one of us.

[00:13:14] Rosie had an unhappy game.

[00:13:15] Everyone knows that.

[00:13:16] He knows that.

[00:13:17] It wasn't without some positives to be fair but he had an unhappy game.

[00:13:21] He was really good at it.

[00:13:22] My boss was pretty good in my opinion.

[00:13:23] Like, there's no one else that there's alarm bells.

[00:13:26] Like I thought Aragon Confuci was really serviceable.

[00:13:28] You're solid?

[00:13:29] Yeah.

[00:13:30] For me, the big surprise was Toby Rudolph.

[00:13:32] Yeah, brother he was.

[00:13:33] He's out of sheep is fantastic.

[00:13:34] He did what he does normally which is running around like mad man tackling and I'm running

[00:13:39] at everything but just coming off the bench and just such a different dimension to his

[00:13:43] game because he can do that against tied forwards.

[00:13:46] And he played for less minutes too.

[00:13:48] Yeah.

[00:13:49] And he was more impactful.

[00:13:50] He ran for over 100 meters didn't he?

[00:13:51] Yeah.

[00:13:52] That last, that very last run and the last set we had when he got the ball think on the

[00:13:56] 35 or 40 metre line and tackled it at the 52 metre mark just with that, just helping

[00:14:01] us get that kick further downfield.

[00:14:03] It was such a good win.

[00:14:05] That back line's not changing anytime soon.

[00:14:07] Not anymore.

[00:14:08] Like one to seven they were all fantastic in their own way.

[00:14:12] I don't know.

[00:14:48] Kicking the edge of the field but it worked until it doesn't.

[00:15:30] The second one he kind of knew and I'm it's kind of confirmed but I think he was hooked

[00:15:35] early on.

[00:15:37] He got a second stint and there's a few issues there too but all this is covered in the

[00:15:42] So we're going around for the letter section and we're going to get through a whole bunch

[00:15:56] Then in previous games we've had last year where we'd have three guys that were rocking

[00:16:00] a roll and then you know 12 guys that were kind of average.

[00:16:04] You can carry a guy when the team lifts.

[00:16:06] And I like the move from the coach where he does take him off because he's not having a

[00:16:11] good game and then name today he's named on the bench.

[00:16:16] He's not starting so whether that changes or not we didn't know until game time but

[00:16:21] it's a little bit of a hey everyone we know this is what happened.

[00:16:25] He's got some stuff to sort out.

[00:16:27] He's in the 17, not dropped.

[00:16:29] He'll be out of the bucket.

[00:16:30] But it's a change I like it.

[00:16:32] It's not just rewarding errors.

[00:16:37] Last year or two they made it out of had the luxury to do that I'm not sure.

[00:16:42] We love Roycey we're back in him you know people make mistakes.

[00:16:46] That's what it is and the thing for me is he knew it.

[00:16:49] You can see it on his face which is both a good thing and a bad thing but he knew it.

[00:16:53] So I appreciate that he's trying to get some second phase player and we set that on

[00:16:57] the pod that we do need that and he's one of the better offloads offloaders.

[00:17:02] But maybe just not to start the game.

[00:17:04] Yeah and I think the big thing and I heard this somewhere else.

[00:17:08] I think when Royce was running into the line and he does it quite a bit he's already

[00:17:12] thinking offload whereas I think he needs to run hard and try and you know kill someone

[00:17:18] and then if the offload presents itself get the two hands to it but if I think he's

[00:17:22] going in thinking I've got to pop this ball.

[00:17:24] Yeah.

[00:17:25] He's such a damaging ball runner like when he doesn't pass it or offload it and I'm

[00:17:30] not saying he shouldn't because it isn't skill he has.

[00:17:33] There was a run against the Warriors that was like 15, 16 meters and it was really great

[00:17:37] run and we saw a lot of it last year and I can't quite remember there was a game where either

[00:17:43] he scored or he set up a try where they couldn't contain him and he got back up again

[00:17:47] and either he scores or he passes.

[00:17:49] Yeah.

[00:17:50] I remember that.

[00:17:51] That was just from him putting the head down and running like he's a hard guy to stop

[00:17:53] and maybe that's all I have to say to him this week is look just be really careful when

[00:17:56] you do it.

[00:17:57] Like don't not do it but you've got to be a bit more careful.

[00:19:43] First of all the lower grades the new town shark jets not so good they went down a close

[00:19:48] one over in New Zealand.

[00:19:50] Sam helix scored two tries which is always exciting to see the young guys coming through so keep

[00:19:55] your arm on them but yeah not a great start for them this week they're actually playing

[00:20:00] at shark park at 340 pm before the main game.

[00:20:04] It's kind of what's so annoying about the six o'clocky coffees that oh we'll go watch

[00:20:09] the jets play I'll meet you at 330 which and it's a good time but sometimes you got

[00:20:15] to do things at 330 but that's what's happening if you can get down there that'll be good

[00:20:19] to watch Billy McGulley is named at 5.8 as well.

[00:20:24] Round six in Harold Mats and SG ball unfortunately both teams went down pretty heavily to Canterbury.

[00:20:31] Harold Mats lost 4.12 SG ball lost 50 to 18 so a bit of work there to be done.

[00:20:37] Someone flag went to New Zealand and won in New Zealand 36 to 10 Michael Gabbrale with two

[00:20:44] tries so this kid will be emerging that's for sure if he's probably already emerging what's

[00:20:50] the definition of emerging.

[00:20:52] This Saturday they're playing at a chest to heal at 4 o'clock against the Bulldogs so

[00:20:57] flag in around 2 against the Bulldogs.

[00:21:00] That's some lower grade stuff for your Josh we do have a big event on Friday evening

[00:21:06] and that is Dalfa Nukin playing his 250th game.

[00:21:09] He's always been very friendly to this podcast of the last couple of years, he's a good lad,

[00:21:13] he's worked for it, he's played in six grand finals.

[00:21:18] One two of them I believe it's the most of any active player.

[00:21:21] I think it's fair to say that we haven't seen the best of him at the sharks but I still

[00:21:27] think that he has given a lot in the time he's been with us.

[00:21:32] Yeah and he's given a lot to the game generally.

[00:21:35] So it's celebration of one of the more successful players we've seen in the NRL and I still

[00:21:42] stand by that he's first year for us was really good.

[00:21:45] And he had his moments last year, I only got 19 minutes on the weekend though so I think

[00:21:50] maybe just easing him back here and I don't mind that.

[00:21:53] Had that one silly era when he's first touched but yeah that happens.

[00:21:58] So I'd like to see what we can get out of him for the next few weeks and see how he progresses.

[00:22:02] Okay so currently named on the bench, he may start not sure but named on the bench and

[00:22:08] if you can get out there to support him and his rugby league career I'm sure that he

[00:22:12] in the club would appreciate it.

[01:23:26] I think we'll get something like that too like I said as long as we play through the middle because

[01:23:34] weakness is their forward pack and this is the kind of game that I would expect a Royce hunt to

[01:23:39] really dominate especially after last week being dropped back to the bench I think when he comes

[01:23:43] on he's going to want to run for 200 meters and score two tries so I'm looking at our forwards

[01:23:48] to really drive through the middle jack jack Williams legs be able to kill them and that quick

[01:23:53] play the ball and I mean last year when we played them at home I think we had about five forwards

[01:23:58] scored tries I think Tommy came a kidness jack Williams Royce hunt they all scored so I think

[01:24:03] it'd be something similar yeah I mean I was going to say I wouldn't matter if we won 12 or 16

[01:24:09] nil because like the game would never been doubt for keeping the zero great defense

[01:24:13] scoring some tries but then the negative would be like oh we should have won by more or even the press

[01:24:17] would be like well I'm a bit worried about their attack now so I won't say that but for me honestly

[01:24:24] like a game like that yeah if we can win like if it was a 16 nil that would be an extreme success

[01:24:35] on Friday I don't really care at this point still early in the season yeah performance obviously

[01:24:40] is important yeah but just getting those two points getting that start to the season that you want

[01:24:54] you got to make it up somewhere and we've done that every year for a while yeah and sometimes it

[01:24:58] works like 2022 it worked last year not so much so yeah just keep on winning and

[01:25:05] good things will come from that and as you say it's like well if it's a clunky performance but

[01:25:09] you win then you can fix that you can work on that if it's I mean if it's a massive win that's

[01:25:13] even better for the four against or whatever I'm not going to complain about a big win but I'm

[01:25:17] certainly not going there I may expect a big win I just I definitely expect this to win though

[01:25:27] but I am confident to say all being well we're gonna win that's kind of good enough right like
