Post Game NRLW Sharks v NQL plus NRL Preview: with Shinazzi and Dan Nichols

[00:00:39] My good friend Dan Nichols and the other and my name is Sam Shinazzi, you know G from 2015. SharkCast Pod monumental day for the mighty Cronulla Sharks because we're playing in three grades more or less.

[00:00:52] The first grade that we have played has just finished a whopping 14 points to nil win to the NRLW team first hit out for the year. Three o'clock, we've got the Jets playing, 530, the headline event I would like to say which is the Cowboys game up in Townsville.

[00:01:09] But we thought we'd jump on and talk about the NRLW for first and then we'll get into some other stuff if we have time.

[00:01:15] And I guess if people are watching at all they can send us some messages and we'll try and jump on and get them up there. But anyway Dan, this is about you and me and the NRLW. I thought a pretty good hit out.

[00:01:29] Damn mate it was, I mean 14-0. You can't come on in and criticise them at all. It is the first game so you know in those of us that are living in the Shire would attest that the weather's pretty gross out there.

[00:01:43] Congrats to anyone who went down, I fully will stout. The boys that were going to jump down, Watterman's got a Q-Binds, got the flu it just wasn't meant to be. But look scrappy game at times mate but 14-0 for the Sharks.

[00:01:55] Considering we spent most first half defending our own line it's pretty impressive. Absolutely and our first clean sheet in our second season which is awesome. And that first half was great like the tries down the left specifically from Tonigato, your girl just absolutely tearing it up.

[00:02:18] The attack looked pretty good in the first half. Yeah it did that left edge. I spent all off season talking about how dangerous the right edge was so of course all feet tries came down the left. Tonigato is all class. Anyone who knows what she can do.

[00:02:33] And I thought the overlap which we saw which you've been screaming for in the first grade came down the left and Jada Taylor, beautiful ball cast, who scored a double just watched the interview real quick.

[00:02:46] She's very humble but what a game from her out on that left edge. It wasn't humming by any stretch but when we had four chances in the first half scored three tries that's pretty good strike right?

[00:02:59] Yeah and I was really impressed with the defence in both halves obviously clean sheet yes obvious statement. But just a couple of our tries came from Taku.

[00:03:09] I mean the Cowboys were not great it has to be said but it's their first hit out that's fine they'll get better.

[00:03:16] But diffial conditions rainy wet slippery conditions which we saw in the second half which is fine they probably I think both hubs were a great hit out for the team.

[00:03:27] First half a bit more slick and attack second half just defending mostly second half who stood out for you as far as performers go. This can be very very biased but Brooke Anderson sits proudly behind me.

[00:03:40] 40 tackles might have been 41 by the end just ran a backside off was utterly fantastic. Tonigardo wasn't super involved but when she did touch ball which was all class.

[00:03:50] Look Penetrani and Anessa Biddle are achieved code IE and Mon Recoit saying they're the best second best centre pairing in competition.

[00:03:58] Rooster's obviously been number one but every time Anessa touched the ball she was breaking four or five tackles and Penetrani must have heard me fawning over Biddle and said anything she can do I can do just as well.

[00:04:09] So I thought I thought that with a four Ellie Johnson Holly Wheeler controlled the middle Quincy Dodd I thought her first thing was good. I knew she was going from dummy half and I think so did anyone who's ever watched her play football ever.

[00:04:21] So it was a bit disappointed that she borrowed through but I thought she was very good and I look I'm a huge Georgia Rabbit Spanish probably wasn't the most involved of all time.

[00:04:31] But once again I maintain I think she'll be our top tri-score other she was pretty good and Cassie Staples obviously with the double very impressive. Now what is this about Preston going to the Bulldogs next year is that confirmed.

[00:04:41] Yeah she signed for the Bulldogs ability she was there inaugural signing she's a shark junior from memory but she played with the Bulldogs New South Wales Cup team.

[00:04:49] I think she kicked the field goal when they won 1-0 last year or even before it would be two years ago now. So unfortunately she's gone which hurts but we saw Georgia Hannaway come on with a couple I think she played nine minutes all up with Tonogato shifting.

[00:05:05] Seven superstar watch some highlights and it was pretty impressive. I think she's the replacement but I haven't done a full deep dive yet. Bit of a shame but you know go out with the premiership would be a nice way to lead the cup.

[00:05:18] Well there's such an annoying thing about rugby league in Australia is the transfer market and the fact that we bought an amazing prop who we're not going to see all year in our colours.

[00:05:27] And we're losing a half back who we're going to see in our colours all year pros and cons I get it but and it's not hard to keep up. But it's just my mind is always racing now going well who's our next half back.

[00:05:39] Where's the prop going to fit in? Who are we going to lose? Like it's just one of those. I find it so annoying. So in my opinion so unprofessional. 100% I mean we signed one of the best props in the game and got excited.

[00:05:51] You're like okay but she's going to play all season for Newcastle and as you said we've got Taylor Preston who's going on the Bulldogs next year. They're excited watching her play as they should be I am with Kate and Johnson Johnson brother.

[00:06:02] But you've got a full season where you just hope that Johnson doesn't get injured and you hope Preston plays light out football, gets it out of the system, goes to the Bulldogs. So yeah it's a difficult situation.

[00:06:12] And we can relate that to Adin for Noor Blake absolutely tearing New Zealand apart last night but then hoping that he's in cotton wool every other moment. So yeah it's obviously a situation which exists all throughout the sport in Australia at the very least.

[00:06:30] What else can you tell me about your thoughts on the NRLW game Dan? What else impressed you? What do you think we need to improve on in the first hit out? Definitely ball handling. Again it was raining as the sun comes out now ironically. It's going to happen.

[00:06:46] You see everyone, you know men's women's at any level the first couple games is you're getting in. So the Cowboys was a good one to start with. I went in and I was pretty confident which I don't like to be openly with Cornal.

[00:06:58] It's a bit of a substitution when I'm confident we lose. But I said to the boys you know Dachi dropped in said what do we got to do today? I said we got to win this game, we can't lose this game.

[00:07:05] So I 14-0 if you offer me that you're taking it all day every day.

[00:07:10] I was really impressed with the defence to be honest last year we conceded some really weak tries and when we played the better teams you know which which are to come obviously they sort of ran through us.

[00:07:22] We didn't see that today obviously keeping them to zero and even at the end when we were 14-0 up and there was that kick they were scramble.

[00:07:28] There were four of the Advils there and there wasn't a Cowboy in sight so that showed some I was really impressed with the effort and I mean that left edge look really really sleep.

[00:07:38] Tonogato she gets a two or mung she's so quick and a lateral movement so good and they watched Jada Taylor coming from behind.

[00:07:46] She's getting the ball I thought she was through in that second half when she that kick return and she threw it to Rabiq so much she held the ball she probably got 60 metres and scores untouched but that'll come.

[00:07:56] But yeah overall mate I just I liked the bench I think I said this was the best 17 we've named and I stand by that the bench is a bit bigger this year we lost to Rada Butler she played a short steam for the Cowboys which starts to lose.

[00:08:11] But I thought the bench look big and they look strong we didn't lose that impotence when the big girls came off to start Johnson and Wheeler so yeah I'm really impressed with the squad. I could talk all day there how good they were but I think defensively.

[00:08:27] I'm glad you mentioned the defense because I probably didn't didn't mention that enough. They really scrambled well throughout the whole game even in the first 10 minutes the Cowboys had a couple of good chances and we shut them down and then nothing changed throughout that so.

[00:08:46] Very very good defense and you're right it's a it's a difference from last year where we did concede we conceded fairly easily at certain points in the game in this game. We're only one game in but really really good.

[00:09:00] Our friend Mitch says this game had a bit of pre-season he feel to it but don't mind the errors it keeps it exciting. Okay there's a positive look at a negative which is great from Mitch.

[00:10:38] Yeah I'm keeping an eye I've got the Twitter open it's probably an hour to early for the side but our 20s actually kick off in six minutes as well. They're playing the catch up game at Henson so it's wall to wall sharks today.

[00:10:51] Yeah I expect Hunt to play he was in the earlier stuff they said there's a few photos on the Jets I'm trying to do 10 things at once but yeah that's frightening if he runs out with huge twos.

[00:11:03] Because there are some conspiracy theories out there which I want to shoot down I've had people message me and ask me about things as to why he's not up in Townsville and what I understand to be the absolute truth is that he was too sick to travel with the team.

[00:11:17] He had a virus of some sort flew virus caught whatever you want but that must have come good if he's going to be playing with the Jets this week.

[00:11:28] Yeah there's a big difference between flying two and a half hours up to North Queensland and driving 20 minutes to Henson Park.

[00:11:34] I think they left on Wednesday or Thursday so he would have been sick at that point and went well we're not going to take you and there's obviously protocols there there's other guys that can come in and out which we'll get to but.

[00:11:46] So if Rosie plays for the Jets today which I guess I kind of hope he does just to have a great hit out but there's nothing sinister there.

[00:11:54] Some of our listeners like yourself Dan go to dark places and theories and conspiracies as far as I'm aware there's nothing happening there that's bad but so we've got that happening then with the 530 game and that's the NRL game and we have two.

[00:12:12] Deboos and our real debut and that is Liam I said and Jaden barrel and some people including the players involved have been waiting for that debut for years and on the other side of the thing they probably didn't think that this debut was coming so soon.

[00:12:33] It's a really beautiful mash of young versus old so to speak and a pretty special time like when lose the draw this is something they'll remember forever their friends and family and it's a pretty big deal right.

[00:12:46] It's huge deal I mean Liam I said if you told me preseason he's gonna debut in whatever around 21 yeah yeah for sure.

[00:12:53] This is a kid who could go back to Fleeke next weekend was tearing it up stepped up and playing me South Wales Cup because Kay Dyches injured and it's been so good that they couldn't ignore him for a first grade debut.

[00:13:04] I'm stoked for the kid he's so good I just hope that everyone remembers that he is 18 or 19 and he might be 19 and he could play Fleeke this week so if he goes out and he doesn't play particularly well let's not say oh his career is over.

[00:13:20] People have been saying he's a Dylan Edwards clone for a long time since he's played for St Mary's and he is he's not particularly big he's 19 he's got two off seasons in the gym ahead of him before he plays regular first grade rugby league but mate this guy I put him down for 200 meters.

[00:13:38] That's probably jumping the gun but I'm happy to say that and both Terry and I got 10 bucks on him for a square try because his support players is spectacular.

[00:13:47] On the other end I can't believe Jayden Bell doesn't have 20 NRL games to his name he's the best hooker in the South Wales Cup by a while he's NRL ready he's a big body you know when we've seen him play there was trial games he's been pretty classy I don't think he played particularly well this year but you know this is a blow he's been running around that squad and I've been calling third.

[00:14:08] For 12 months to put him in because Braille has played what 300 games in a row there's gonna be a game where he does get the flu or it's not his toe or something has happened to get him in today is just just brewing tactically.

[00:14:21] Yeah it's interesting in that he's replacing one of the biggest bodies that we have and one of the biggest bodies in the NRL so we know that he's a good hooker but he can also play that middle just as well and I think I think in this case he won't be replacing Braille I could be wrong but I think he's got a lot of potential.

[00:14:38] I think he might just come on as a middle and then I don't know if we're winning by a million maybe he goes to hooker I'm not sure but it's yeah it's a huge deal for him and I want to see what he's got at this level I've never been an advocate to throw him into first grade personally unless the situation was warranted but I'm super happy to see him debut for us he's earned it and I want to see what he can do with the big boys.

[00:15:05] I don't think you'll understand I think you'd be have a really strong game and only am Eastern that's just an incredible story and if anyone says anything bad about this guy at the end of the game I'm personally gonna come around and bop you because.

[00:15:18] You would have to be the most negative of the negative to really bring this story down because young kid people are gonna get shocked when they see him Dan how small.

[00:15:30] And how young looking he is like they're gonna be and I say that you know being respectful to him I'm not having to go at anything about him but he's a young looking dude.

[00:15:40] But he's tough as nails like I've seen him like you have at the new town level I've seen him at lower level I've seen him at training he's not going to back down.

[00:15:50] He will not back down and we don't have any affiliation with any betting companies like a good self but you're right like if people are partial to it anytime try score a bet or whatever.

[00:16:04] First or last whatever you do he's probably gonna get one because his strength is backing up he's excellent backing up he can do a whole bunch of other things but he's not quite in the Dylan Edwards creative one break assist Tricest mold doesn't mean he can't do it doesn't mean he won't do it.

[00:16:24] But I'm looking at him just to play a safe game but absolutely be backing up. I want to see 200 meters etc. I think that's his strength.

[00:16:35] Yeah most of these hearts for Newtown have come in he's running the support play as most young fullbacks do he does he does have a sleek passing game I wouldn't put it in the.

[00:16:46] It's hard to find an RL comp because this kid hasn't played a single second of an RL yet so we'll come back to that in a couple of weeks but I'm confident in the mid 10 bucks who cares but I'm confident that it will score a try we've seen so many players score on debut.

[00:17:02] But his support play look I'm a big world Kennedy fan but his support play this is a little bit lacking.

[00:17:08] I think I sense the port plays his head and shoulders above but Kennedy's under the high ball like I sense what a meter 68 something is small he's on the small end he's one happen has in time thinking that way anyways 8 kilos less so you got to keep that mind when he goes up to the ball.

[00:17:26] Also when he goes into contact look rookies make errors I mean Ronaldo Maltala the worst day of all time turned out OK so today you shouldn't build a career on. You know he's his debut but I'm super excited he's going to run hard early and often.

[00:17:42] Yeah I'm putting down 200 meters so I think it's a given if they someone offered a betting mark for that and take it.

[00:20:32] Went back to New South Wales Cup absolutely dominated that we were there that day he knew well he was two of the three best players the other being Colham by a long way on the part.

[00:20:41] And then he's come back in and he's he's run his backside off he looks fitter he's not getting the minutes that he did when he was starting I maintain he's better off the bench.

[00:20:49] So yeah I'm more than happy to see him there if Jack Williams is fit there's probably a discussion but I'm still learning towards Toby just OK now we know that we do have some some lagging on our video from time to time.
