[00:01:05] Hey there, welcome to SharkCast, part of a podcast dedicated to the greatest sporting club in the history of the world. The mighty Cronulla Sutherland Sharks. This short, sharp, interview-based, teamless Tuesday episode is brought to you by Dyson Logistics, the Royal Motor Yacht Club in Port Hacking and Jason Hawes at Crips & Crips Real Estate. My name is Sam Shinazzi, OG 2015, 11th season of podcasting, having an absolute ball doing so. Speaking of the Royal Motor Yacht Club in Port Hacking, Wednesday night this week, state of origin, the decider, state against state, man against mate, blues versus Queensland.
[00:01:33] There's no more perfect place to go watch it than at the Royal Motor Yacht Club in Port Hacking. Food, beverages, screens, whatever order of that is important to you, they cover it all. So go down there and tell them that the SharkCast crew sent you. Big week in Sharkland, big week in SharkCast land. They're all big, right? And this week we've got the NRL Dolphins coming to town on a Friday night. It's going to be awesome. We'll be in the house for that one.
[00:01:59] And then on Saturday we've got the NRLW team heading down to Canberra. Both teams desperate to get off to their first win of the season. Canberra losing to St. George last week and Cronulla losing to Parramatta as well as we know. So that's what's going on in Sharkland. There's a meeting down at Carrilla tonight with Steve Mace and with Dino Mottetester. Members get together. You guys and girls let them know your feelings.
[00:02:28] They answer and so forth. So if you're interested in that and you hear this in time, head out to that. I think you might need to register with the Sharks, but you can work all that out yourself. Also, on this episode you'll hear from Brayden Hammond-Welley and a very scary interlude with Nico Hines, the King of Keringba. Until we get there though, let's go through the team news. The mighty Cronulla Southland Sharks to play the Dolphins. 7.45, 7.50, 8 o'clock. You look up for time on Friday night at Shark Stadium.
[00:02:57] Your fullback is Will Kennedy. Your wing is a Sione Katoa and Rinaldo Milutala. Your centres are Jesse Ramian and Sifat Alakai. Your halves are Braden Trendle and the scary Nico Hines. Scary because he scared me in the interview, which you'll hear. What else have we got here? Fenua Blake at prop with Oregon Kifusi. Blake Braley is hooking the scrum. Your back row is a Britton Nicarate, Teague Wilton and captain Cam McInnes.
[00:03:23] On the bench, Dan Atkinson in 14, Jesse Colquhoun, Toby Rudolph and Braden Hamlin-Welley, who you'll be hearing from in this episode. Extended bench, 18th man Billy Burns, then Hohepa Puru, Nephi Puru, Michael Gabriel and Jaden Beryl. So that's your team. Not a lot of change from previous weeks.
[00:03:48] Yes, Dan Atkinson does return for the moment to the 14 jersey as proven in previous games. We'll see what happens to that team list at an hour before kickoff on Friday night. But not much there to make note of as far as change goes. Just looking at it. But you do have Dan Atkinson at 14, Jessica O'Hoon at 15, Toby Rudolph in 16,
[00:04:11] Brayden Hamlin-Welley in 17, then Billy Burns in 18, with the extended group of Hohepa, Nephi, Michael Gabriel and Jaden Beryl. That is the NRL side of things. If we skip over to the NRLW, we have Emma Varon, Cassie Staples, Tiana Penetani, Anessa Biddle and Georgia Ravix. The halfs are Georgia Hannaway, who you'll be hearing from later in the week on Shotcast, and Shanta Kireratu.
[00:04:41] Forward pack is Ellie Johnston, Quincy Dodd, Jacinta Carter with the back row and what a back row. Tale Holmes, Rhiannon Byers and Brooke Anderson. The bench is Nakia Davis-Welsh, Jada Katsafua, Manalita Takapatolo and making her NRLW debut, Steph Faulkner. The 18th person is Grace Lee Weeks, also Leckie Lailua, Dominique Dutrois and Tamaia Kelly-Science.
[00:05:09] So most notably, after a really great week in Harvey Norman's Women's Rugby League last week, scoring two tries I think, Steph Walker will make her NRLW debut. She's been promoted to the top 24 from a development deal due to Philomena's ACL injury last week. We send out our love and thoughts to Philomena with a horrific injury.
[00:05:34] She'll be back next year, better than ever we hope, and she had a great first game while she was on the field. So all respect to her. They are your two teams this week for the Cronulla Sharks. There are more teams out there. That's the Jets, there's the flag team. Playing before the NRL on Friday night, I believe. So the gates will be around 5.15, probably kick off 5.30. Check your local guides, of course. Building up to the big one against the Dolphins is going to be a great game. Must-win game for the Sharks.
[00:06:04] I don't say that very often, but it's a must-win game for lots and lots of different reasons. Get down there if you can. I'm sure there's a ticket left at the moment. It's going to be a great night. I'm sure the team, the club, would appreciate your help being down there. And who knows, every person through the gate raising their voices may get them across the line. I'm looking forward to being down there. Looking forward to seeing a win. I want to sing that song with all my heart and all my gusto and all my joy. And I'm looking forward to Sharks being the Dolphins on a Friday night.
[00:06:34] It's going to be tough. It's going to be tough if their rep players back up. They're going to be a very handy team. We're on the same wins as them. We both won eight games. So their form run has been late. Our dip in form has been late. So the two teams meeting, that's why it seems like we're worlds apart. We're actually very much in the same world. Just they've found their form of late. They were beaten by Newcastle, I'm pretty sure, very recently. So they're beatable, but they can also put 50 on you.
[00:07:04] So it's kind of intriguing going into this game and seeing how our defense holds up, which it did pretty well against the Storm. But also, I guess more importantly, that attack has to shine to beat this mob, because they're going to score some points no matter how good their defense of the Sharks is. So looking forward to it. Heaps of stuff going on in SharkCast land. We'll bring all that to you throughout the following days, weeks, months and years.
[00:07:29] Until then, I'd like you to pay attention to Mr. Brayden Hamlin-Whelly, who's always very gracious with his time. And as I said before, there's a bit of a very short cameo from Nico Hines. Don't get alarmed when you hear what happens, even though I very much did. Up up, Cronulla. We'll talk to you soon. Let's go. Brayden Hamlin-Whelly, welcome back to the show, sir. Back from injury for a while now. How's the body going?
[00:07:59] Yeah, it's good. It's finally sort of getting back to some sort of normality. Yeah, feeling refreshed after the bye. Having body and mind sort of aligned for the first time in a while. So yeah, it's all looking up. Team's been a bit rusty. Lost four out of the last five. Big game against the Dolphins on Friday at home. How do we turn it around as a team? I think it's just accepting the fact that there's no way else through it.
[00:08:28] But to do it, really, isn't it? We know what we're capable of. And obviously, results haven't gone our way. But I think the Melbourne Storm performance probably was one that we can build off. The scoreline probably doesn't show that or reflect the game that it was. I mean, it was 12-6 to up to the 60th minute. And it just sort of fell away from us at the end there.
[00:08:53] But yeah, I've got so much confidence and faith in the people that lace up their boots and wear the jersey. And the coaching staff and the systems they put in place. Yeah, we always seem to have a sort of mid-year slump, us as a team. But we're not down on confidence or belief in ourselves and each other. So yeah, it's exciting times. And I'm sure if we played our potential, we can definitely turn it around.
[00:09:19] It's interesting as a fan base, we tend to react the worst way. And I'm not sort of trying to talk up the last five weeks. But under Fitzgibbon, in a regular season, we've lost three in a row like twice. That's in the fourth season. So it's not like we're used to these losing streaks. So I think that we can definitely turn it around. Oh my God. That was Nico Hines. That'll go through the audio, Nico. I am.
[00:09:49] So the mood's pretty good. No one's down on their luck. I do think, though, against the Dolphins, a huge test. They've got obviously some key weapons. The halfback's unbelievable, for starters. But just all over the park. Is it more about us than them this week or a bit of both? Yeah, as the cliche saying goes, not worrying about them. It's all about us. But it really is. I think no matter who puts on their jersey and runs out against us, the mindset and the job doesn't change at all.
[00:10:19] We've got to go out there and put our best foot forward. And they've put on some amazing performances as of late. Put 50 or 40 on consecutive teams in a space of four or five weeks. So definitely aware of their strike power. But, yeah, back to us. When we're on, we are one of, if not, can beat anyone in their day. And it's just for a fact that we haven't done it as of late. But what better time to change that around than now?
[00:10:48] How's the coach? How's his ways? Is he the same old coach? We heard about the big blow-up the other week, so we don't need to go across that again. But I'm glad to believe he was a bit more impressed with the Melbourne performance. How's he been in the week off? Yeah, obviously the Broncos game was totally different to the Melbourne game, even though the scorelines sort of tell a different story. But, again, like I said to you before, 12-6 up to 60 minutes. It showed that we were still fighting and we still had some belief and fight in us.
[00:11:16] And I think that's what he was most proud of. And, again, that's what we can build off is the fact that we can still play for each other and still fight for each other no matter what goes against us. So he's been a lot happier. I've actually seen him smile this week. I think he's grown here this week, apart from losing it. He's grown here. Yeah, it's crazy. He's got a bit of a 5 o'clock shadow on the top of his head. So maybe he's a bit happier there growing here instead of losing more. But, yeah, it's on us to earn how we're feeling and earn the way that he coaches.
[00:11:46] So I'm sure he's been a lot happier, but we just got to get the job done this week. All right. Thanks for your time. Ripping on Friday. Thank you.
