[00:01:51] Before we hit the preview, let's get through a bit of mail that's been sent through since
[00:01:56] the last episode.
[00:01:59] And first up, we have Tad who's a longtime regular listener.
[00:02:03] I love the work you put in every week, love the community of sharks fans you introduced
[00:02:08] me to through your podcast.
[00:02:11] I may have been to maybe 15 to 20 sharks games in my life, including the grand final because
[00:02:17] I don't live near the shire and don't like the travel.
[00:02:20] I watch every minute of every game and being a shark fans a huge part of my life.
[00:02:25] I don't watch TV or listen to music so when you go on a musical talk most of the time
[00:02:29] I zone out, but I appreciate it's a big part of your life so I understand why it comes
[00:02:33] up so much.
[00:02:34] I could listen to a Dylan Wright weekly update podcast purely because he's a diehard like
[00:02:40] us.
[00:02:41] Actually have him on at the moment and the man's got a voice, good luck Dylan for the future.
[00:02:47] So that's really kind of you to say Tad, I know that we try and keep the music stuff
[00:02:51] to a minimum but it is a big part of my life as well as a number of the other co-hosts
[00:02:57] so and our listeners too.
[00:02:59] So we're not shy about that but obviously it's a shark's podcast first and foremost.
[00:03:04] Give Dylan some support, give him a shout out.
[00:03:06] If you're able to send a text through on Sunday night I'm sure it would be a massive help
[00:03:10] to him.
[00:03:11] Maybe the way it's looking like a really good healthy musical working career for Dylan
[00:03:16] Wright coming up based on his time at Australian Idol.
[00:03:20] It's propelled him to a very different level to where he was at and I know he's pretty happy
[00:03:24] with that.
[00:03:25] I think he still wants to take it all out but if he doesn't I would imagine a whole bunch
[00:03:30] of people on that show are going to be fine from here on in.
[00:03:33] With hard work of course.
[00:03:35] Tad says, my input on the team, I'm always an optimist like yourself when it comes
[00:03:41] to the team.
[00:03:42] Now that's interesting Tad, I would not call myself that, I know everyone else calls me
[00:03:45] that, that's your opinion, I appreciate it.
[00:03:48] I've had players, I don't like an hour Jersey and players that don't think deserve to
[00:03:51] call themselves a shark.
[00:03:53] Since Fitzgibbon has been coach I don't think I could say a negative word about the club
[00:03:57] team players etc.
[00:03:58] I'm so happy to see our team is stuck together and built as a group.
[00:04:02] Something that I heard is stuck with me.
[00:04:05] Games are not one on paper they're one on grass.
[00:04:07] We have a great team but there are better teams on paper in the comp.
[00:04:11] We don't seem to be bothered by that.
[00:04:13] I'm opening two games with a small sample size to go off, but you can see the boys are
[00:04:18] on the same page and want success.
[00:04:20] I know over the past couple of years we've struggled against the top eight sides, but this
[00:04:23] year feels different.
[00:04:24] We seem to have much more belief which goes a lot further than reputation.
[00:04:29] I'm looking forward to this year and confident it will be attending another grand final.
[00:04:33] Whoa Tad.
[00:04:34] I also give a shout out to our friend Dan who you met at a concert and I passed on his
[00:04:39] details.
[00:04:40] Tad so I appreciate all of that and I'm happy that you're a happy Euro shark fan especially
[00:04:46] right now.
[00:04:47] And thanks so much for your support.
[00:04:49] Please don't have a beer stranger.
[00:04:50] Thank you so much.
[00:04:52] Next up we have Anthony and Anthony says love the show.
[00:04:56] Listening to the review of the last game I recalled we saw something very different
[00:04:59] at half time.
[00:05:01] The jump around song played with dancers entering some of the stands dressed in white.
[00:05:07] I believe they were trying to get a US college style jump around going like the Wisconsin
[00:05:12] badges do.
[00:05:14] Interesting to see if this continues at future home games and if we start to pick it up,
[00:05:18] that's from Corks.
[00:05:19] Well, I didn't see that but I have heard about that happening at the game and it is obviously
[00:05:24] very much American influence thing.
[00:05:26] Yeah and we can see how our fans take to it.
[00:05:29] I think it's aimed at a younger kind of crowd so I hope they're targeting the right part
[00:05:33] of the field.
[00:05:35] Let's keep it on that.
[00:05:36] Thanks so much for pointing out Anthony really appreciate it.
[00:05:38] Really appreciate the support for the show.
[00:05:41] Our old friend Jason has been in touch when I say all the mean he's been listening for
[00:05:44] a long time and I have received a message loud and clear I'll be back in touch with you
[00:05:51] when I can Jason but just want to give your shout out.
[00:05:55] Sean's been in touch.
[00:05:56] Now I'm going to start with the last bit that he says.
[00:05:58] He says there seems to be a few Sean's writing in if it's easier you can refer to me as
[00:06:03] Sharks of Sean on my Instagram handle.
[00:06:06] Sharks of Sean I'm happy to refer to you as that but you're going to have to call yourself
[00:06:10] that because I will never remember that but I appreciate you pointing out the difference
[00:06:14] and yeah as you've signed off Sharks of Sean let's go with that.
[00:06:18] You said number one against the dogs noted that Hines gave his left side a blast for
[00:06:25] not running up in support at one point also gave a gobbful to Blake Braille if you're
[00:06:29] not getting the ball or the call quicker to him for the drop goal.
[00:06:34] This is great to see he's stepping up to demand plays and getting cranky about it.
[00:06:37] It's only a good thing.
[00:06:39] I only saw one of those incidents I agree I think as long as he does it in a fair and
[00:06:43] spirited way there's no negativity involved I think that he just demanding the ball different
[00:06:50] times and if he thinks that's going to get us across the line then I'm all for it.
[00:06:54] It's a very tight knit group and I would very much like the point out that things like
[00:06:59] that would not be taken personally on the field it's just emotion and a leader speaking
[00:07:05] out.
[00:07:06] The game was more entertaining on TV than live at the ground watching live osfrastrate
[00:07:10] at the inability of nail territory dogs are so subpar and even Blake should have had
[00:07:16] the tempo of the game under control against a lesser opposition we can't be playing in
[00:07:20] that way against a team like the Panthers.
[00:07:23] You'll also say it's not just the defensive structures that have improved it's the physicality
[00:07:27] the centers and back three in particular are more aggressive with their defense Jesse looks
[00:07:31] like a man possessed they look bigger on the field I'm not sure if they've bogged up but
[00:07:36] it's very impressive.
[00:07:38] I also would like to point that out Sean and I agree with you that they're playing with
[00:07:42] a physicality we haven't seen for a few years and I really love it I think that if they
[00:07:45] can maintain that it will take them a long way.
[00:07:48] You say Toby is a meat and potatoes hard runner and it suits him seems like he's a specific
[00:07:53] role with instructions and is nailing it.
[00:07:56] Trindle on Fox today said words the effect of all I have to do is make my tackles clearly
[00:08:00] this is the mantra and long may it happen.
[00:08:04] Defense is of course referred to as D maybe it should be G and D for the sharks for grit
[00:08:09] and defense keep up the good work.
[00:08:12] Sharks the Sean thank you so much for your wise words agree with all that not much more
[00:08:15] can add to it but you are watching the game very closely and I appreciate that.
[00:08:21] He has been in touch and not with some good news he had a pretty unhappy time down at
[00:08:28] Shark Park on Friday and he sent me a I guess a post he did on his social media and it
[00:08:36] says I'm never going back to Shark Park.
[00:08:39] I've given it a few days for the duster settle and to calm down but I'm content in my decision
[00:08:45] $42 for GA standing on a hill ticket arguably the worst parking situation of any stadium
[00:08:51] in Australia 25 minute bar line to be told to be his per person because it's now half
[00:08:55] time.
[00:08:56] It's only half time because your service was so slow.
[00:09:00] Worst food and beverage offerings get with the time of 2024 to tiny big screens 1995
[00:09:08] sound system doesn't cut the mustard.
[00:09:11] Access out of the stadium after the game is actually unsafe made worse by security trying
[00:09:15] to force you off the hill into the rolling crowd even with a baby being carried on a chest
[00:09:21] and that's from Tate.
[00:09:23] That's really disappointing that was your experience.
[00:09:27] There's some things I can touch on summer won't but the $42 for the GA standing I'm not
[00:09:32] sure how that works and I'm sure there's different prices out there if you're a member
[00:09:38] if you buy a bunch in bulk etc.
[00:09:40] But $42 I mean it seems standard whether that's right or wrong.
[00:09:46] That's for you to decide it.
[00:09:48] I agree it seems excessive but we don't make up these prices unfortunately.
[00:09:54] As far as the parking goes I mean the club did offer long term members the chance to take
[00:10:04] up some parking in the new car park for the new complex next door so that's up and
[00:10:10] running and there was the option to park there.
[00:10:13] For a lot of members I guess I'm a very long term member almost 25 years.
[00:10:19] I'm assuming that's long term but I know people who are a bit less than that you know
[00:10:24] in the 5 year bracket and they got the same email.
[00:10:27] So there was an option there for a lot of people to take that up aside from that there
[00:10:31] is just street parking around and it is a bit of a hike but it's nothing crazy compared
[00:10:37] to other stadiums.
[00:10:39] I know if you look at the new Paramount of Stadium of course that's got parking in house
[00:10:44] if you pre-booking the least clubs nearby but I think saying it's the worst parking situation
[00:10:49] in Australia might be dramatic I don't know as a local with the benefit knowledge of being
[00:10:55] local I do know places where you can park for free and it's not the longest walk so I
[00:11:01] anytime you want to be in touch about that kind of thing and it goes for anyone if you
[00:11:04] want hints and tips please get in touch and I'll tell you what I know.
[00:11:08] The bar lines were not great and we acknowledge that on the show we need to see what's going
[00:11:14] to happen around two the club is aware of it usually it is a round one issue I don't
[00:11:19] know why can't explain that the two beers per person half time thing is a legality with
[00:11:26] the local licensing people it's not a shark thing I understand your argument you've been
[00:11:30] in line you're waiting and now it's half time I understand that as far as offering
[00:11:35] of the food and beverage I know with the beverage again it comes down to some licensing
[00:11:40] issues so you won't be getting too many boutique beers in there.
[00:11:43] The food I think has come a long way compared to the old days there are different for want
[00:11:48] for better word food trucks there's the Mexican place there's different things there which
[00:11:53] I think can appeal to a lot of people whether you want to stand there and wait in line
[00:11:58] it's a different matter so saying it's the worst and getting with the times I think
[00:12:02] they're slowly getting there I understand what you're saying and if you listen to the
[00:12:06] show my friend Kiran was fortunate enough to get me some food he had to line up for a
[00:12:10] while and he came back with a Pluto pop and a bucket of it would have come back with
[00:12:14] Pluto pop and some nuggets and chips and that was all that was left so I experienced
[00:12:19] it I hear you the clubs are aware of it the screen situations interesting isn't it like
[00:12:23] we need to upgrade that I don't know how it happens aside from some money from somewhere
[00:12:28] the screens are not good and I'm someone who is very poorly sighted poor vision
[00:12:35] and I'm with you there but it's money so maybe maybe I don't know maybe there's a change
[00:12:41] coming hopefully the sound system I would love to say is going to change but it's been
[00:12:46] like that for a long time and you know that on this show we've begged people in charge
[00:12:51] to do something about it nothing's really happened so I kind of lost the words there
[00:12:56] as far as access out of the stadiums you're saying it's unsafe especially with the baby
[00:13:01] I would just sort of and it's hard and I'm saying it in hindsight and I wasn't there
[00:13:06] to experience it in that position you're in but I would just say hold your ground and explain
[00:13:11] that you're not moving until it's safe and point out that it's an issue try and find a
[00:13:16] club try and find a club employee if you're not happy with the security decision I know
[00:13:21] it's hard to sometimes debate with those people but I'm just trying to give you some insight
[00:13:27] into a different way to approach it so we can get you back to the ground date because
[00:13:30] we want you to come back and I'm sure the club would think the same and again you know
[00:13:35] what you need to do you need to send this to the club I'm happy that you sent it to me
[00:13:40] and I'll happily read it out the club needs to hear this and we have people at the club
[00:13:43] listen to the show but you need to send it direct because then the message gets cross
[00:13:49] super appreciate you being in touch date and I hope you change your mind about about
[00:13:54] not going back.
[00:13:55] Dave has been in touch and he has sent me a photo I'm ashamed to say I don't know where
[00:14:01] you are if you're in Cornell art that'll be very funny but you're wearing a shark cast
[00:14:07] t-shirt and it looks amazing you got that from Robby Lee Merch he just gone with the classic
[00:14:11] shark cast logo nice and big in the center of a black t-shirt I need you drinking some
[00:14:17] mosaic so happy birthday to you I believe and I'll respond to the rest of your message
[00:14:24] privately.
[00:14:26] So I think that's all the mail that's come in since the last episode appreciate everyone
[00:14:31] being in touch and we do have a game to preview and that is Saturday night against the
[00:14:39] West Tigers that like hard over it's a 7.35 kick off I would grab your tickets if it's
[00:14:45] not already sold out like us I believe there's a limited capacity there and if you're heading
[00:14:49] out there try and do it with some time to spare because it gets pretty congested there
[00:14:54] I know a lot of you have already been but if you haven't been for a while I like how
[00:14:58] to get super congested it's hard to park speaking of parking to take the park around like
[00:15:04] up and it's going to be a fun one it's going to be it's going to be a fun one because the
[00:15:11] Tigers left it like hard and their fans left and it's a new year for them with Benji
[00:15:17] in charge and they really want to impress and they weren't too good last week but it's
[00:15:21] a new week and anything goes.
[00:15:24] Shark's team named 1-7 as you would imagine Toby holds the prop spot with Gafusi Big Jack
[00:15:32] Williams comes in for Britain Nicaroo who suspends it to Jack Williams will start the game
[00:15:36] in 11 on to the bench will be Billy Burns making his shark debut and he will cover for
[00:15:43] Jack Williams so the Benji's Delfinookan Royce Hunt Billy Burns and Tall Tom Hazelson are
[00:15:48] pretty big bench still.
[00:15:50] The moment 18th man is Cal Iro Big Tukes at Concern Stone Street and Burrell also hanging
[00:15:57] around of course we won't know the final lineup until 6.35 on Saturday night but I'm
[00:16:02] led to believe that Jack will start and Billy will come off the bench should that change
[00:16:06] that is different to what I've heard at the moment.
[00:16:10] Tigers have named a slightly different team from last week they've got a new half back
[00:16:14] in Aiden Caesar who came off the bench he's he's going to be starting for them and he's
[00:16:18] a very experienced half back.
[00:16:20] Justin Olam will play his first game for the Tigers as well, long time Melbourne Storm Centre
[00:16:25] can do some damage so let's not take him lightly.
[00:16:28] He'll be replacing the injured Stafford Taua.
[00:16:31] He's looking at the game West Tigers haven't been around forever and we've played 36 games
[00:16:38] pretty even they've won 18 with 117 with one draw.
[00:16:43] They did dominate us for a while and it was hard to beat the West Tigers particularly
[00:16:49] with the new coach running around like a crazy talented attacking machine that he was but
[00:16:58] since 2015 we've won 10 of the past 11 games including each of the past four over the last
[00:17:06] 11 games we've had a great record and we've scored almost 150 more points than them
[00:17:14] as well in total in those 11 games so looking to keep that going all of the past four games
[00:17:22] have been decided by 24 points or more we're hoping that it'll be a big win for us.
[00:17:27] We definitely don't want them to win by 24 points or more we don't want them to win at all.
[00:17:31] We last played it like out in 2019, we've won the past two there but prior to that Tigers
[00:17:38] won five of the opening seven clashes between the teams since the merger of West St.
[00:17:43] Belmane.
[00:17:44] It's not a great ground for us but recent success there which is fantastic.
[00:17:50] West Tigers did not start well last week.
[00:17:54] Overall going back to last year they've had one win from the past 14 games around 25, 1 point
[00:18:01] win over the dolphins.
[00:18:02] There's no reason we should be losing this game.
[00:18:05] They did have a very very very big win last year their biggest ever win at Leica in round
[00:18:11] 12 66 to 18 and memorable win over the Cowboys.
[00:18:16] Sharks come into the game with really good form we've won three of our past four and six
[00:18:21] of our past eight going back to last year.
[00:18:24] I love this one.
[00:18:26] The 18 points we've conceded into games they've come inside the opening 20 minutes on a couple
[00:18:32] occasions against 12 men if we fix up that start to the we're in really good shape even
[00:18:37] if we don't we can still win those games.
[00:18:41] That's where the points have been conceded this year so that's very interesting.
[00:18:44] We had some success last year away from Shark Park nothing amazing but we won nine of 15
[00:18:49] games so I know a lot of you have been into me about this one during the week and we've
[00:18:54] not started a season three and oh since 2002.
[00:18:59] At first of two memorable for different reasons years that Chris Anderson took over.
[00:19:05] We missed the finals twice from the six previous times we were three and oh that was in 1982
[00:19:12] and 1990.
[00:19:14] We made the grand final in 78 and 97 and in 1999 we finished minor premieres after three
[00:19:21] wins from three games.
[00:19:24] So let's win let's see what happens the odds are getting better the more you win which
[00:19:28] is fantastic.
[00:19:30] Defense has been really strong we've conceded 13 points or less in the past four games
[00:19:34] haven't done that for a long time so let's keep defending and you'll win the game with
[00:19:40] your defense.
[00:19:41] Now see how you can tell like scoring tries against the Tigers he's got seven and he's
[00:19:45] passed three.
[00:19:47] Billy Burns will make his debut for the sharks probably from the bench he debuted for
[00:19:52] Penrath in 2019 he played 12 games over two years for them he then went to the dastardly
[00:19:57] dragons and he played 29 matches.
[00:20:00] Big Jack Williams will play just his fourth match starting in the second row from what is
[00:20:05] going to be his 102nd game.
[00:20:07] He's covered Britain Nicaroo who suspended so it's just his fourth time starting in the
[00:20:11] second row.
[00:20:12] He's played more when he's come on from the bench but starting so he's fourth match.
[00:20:17] I really think this game is there for us to be winning it and I'm not saying that with
[00:20:23] disrespect to the Tigers I'm saying that with respect to how well we've started the
[00:20:26] year and even to a large degree how well we finished the year last year it's just continued
[00:20:31] on.
[00:20:32] I know we didn't get the winning against the roosters but played well in the final sort
[00:20:35] of 5 or 6 games with that new left edge of Trindle and now Teague is back and it looks
[00:20:42] a lot more secure defensively and looks good in the Tigers well.
[00:20:47] I do think we just got to keep playing the way we have been defense orientated minimise
[00:20:52] the errors get three sets kick the way Nicaroo and Trindle have been doing chase it and
[00:20:59] we're on our way it sounds simple but that's just how it works and I'll be targeting both
[00:21:04] sides of the field.
[00:21:05] I know Junior 2 POS led in a bunch of tries for the Tigers in the past year.
[00:21:09] Charlie Stainz is not a great defender either and I think I'd really be using our wingers
[00:21:14] and our edge attack to go about winning the game.
[00:21:20] Do the hard stuff in the middle and then you've got left and right to go to keep an eye out
[00:21:25] for Jerem Buller their fullback he's young and raw but he set up a bunch of tries in
[00:21:31] his small amount of games last year for them.
[00:21:34] The halves are competent, Locla and Galvan is very raw and green and on day Bool last week
[00:21:40] he looked pretty good and he's only going to get better and Aiden sees there as a veteran
[00:21:43] just very solid in what he does I'm not particularly phased by him but he'll go out there
[00:21:49] and do a job.
[00:21:50] Their fullback is sneaky okay, Bigst of Fano and David Clemer are more than competent
[00:21:57] props you know they would not look out of place in other teams and UPI caracise pretty much
[00:22:03] the life blood of the team at Hookah.
[00:22:06] Isaiah Papaletti has been good historically like I don't know what sort of form he's in
[00:22:11] at the moment but I don't know how I'd describe it the last year or so but he's a good player.
[00:22:17] John Bateman is skillful and he will niggle the heck out of all of us so we need to hold
[00:22:24] that composure like we did against the Bulldogs.
[00:22:28] I believe we can just let him go for it, let him get himself into some trouble so that's
[00:22:32] the word on the game this week hope you enjoy it wherever you watch it whether at the game
[00:22:37] whether you're watching on TV on Fox Sports or the listening to it on the radio or overseas
