So let's have it, and we can discuss things for a little while. Good way to sort of wind down your shoes that afternoon.

Of course it's Derby Week. Love a Derby. Derby is must-win for so many reasons. And this week I'll be challenged by many to say that the two points is more important than Derby. And you may even have me there. 4 or 5 p.m. over at Stinky Cogra.

[00:02:21] On Saturday, so day before, we have NRL Dub coming to town. Ocean Protect Stadium against the Titans. High-flying Titans third place. Sharks going to lift their socks a little bit. 3.15 p.m. Standalone game, if you will. There may be a game on before. You need to check your local guide to that. But 3.15 p.m. And if you're a season ticket holder, etc., do your fine print research. If you're a season ticket holder, you get entry in with your pass. So that's what's going on.

[00:02:49] We had our Kieran episode drop yesterday, which many of you consumed. Appreciate that. Good to see Siffer. Not the worst case scenario. Hopefully he's in this week or one week off.

[00:03:41] Alex, I don't think you'll see him this week, but the good news is it's not too bad. Adam says, good afternoon. Good afternoon to you. Wes says, good afternoon, Sam. And a shark tragic. But we are all one because Sam is a shark tragic. Of course, Jacob is watching from New Zealand. Hello. Hello. Thank you. The great Lewis is watching. I didn't see you in the mayor's photos this week, brother. Any word on Siffer? The word is it's not too bad.

[00:04:11] Possibly a week. And it's just not that bad. So I don't have official official word. It may be released at four o'clock. But the word unofficially is that all of our good thoughts and good vibes worked. And he's going to play on with a bit of a break, maybe a week or two break. So TBC on that. But it's not season ending as far as we have heard, which is a miracle really. And I'm so glad. Our friends over on Insta are there. Now, I'm going to remind you a couple of times about this.

[00:04:41] But while I've got you and while I'm reminding you, my friend Ash Taylor, who's the club historian, has done a piece on Phil Dottie. Now, Phil Dottie was a great winger back in the, he'll tell you officially, but I want to say mid-80s. And he was our first recognized indigenous aboriginal player. And we are indigenous round this week and next week. So very timely. And Phil's got a great story. You'll be able to read that on sharks.com.au.

[00:05:11] Ash is going to be right up. So keep your eye out on the Phil Dottie story. And we'll try to remind you about that in the coming episodes, that kind of thing. But if you can just put that one in your mind for now, that'd be great. Jay's talking about Nephi Peru. Nephi Peru. Yeah, not her husband. Nephi Peru. Apparently signed with Perth Bears. Where are we at with Hojepa and his contract? So I don't know about where we're at, but I am confident in saying Hoheppa won't be going anywhere.

[00:05:40] So you watch this based on that one, but I don't think Hoheppa will be leaving us. I think that Nephi will be. And I think that you will see the likes of Riley Pollard stepping up a little bit more, which is awesome next year. And the progression's working. The system's working. So happy days for Nephi with a, I imagine a bit of a pay increase and maybe security and maybe more of a chance to play first grade.

[00:06:07] And happy days for a guy like Riley Pollard, who will most likely be next in line. And dare I say there might be another signing from within our ranks, so to speak, who might become the new Riley Pollard. So I think that we're going to see the next year, the shark system really kicking in and producing, if not first graders guys within or near the squad to really help us out.

[00:06:33] But yes, that's right, Jay, that Riley Pollard will be in the top 30 next year. And my point being, someone else will be replacing Riley Pollard's position now. So they'll be second in waiting, so to speak. And I've got a few ideas on who that might be, but we'll wait and see on that. But I think it'll be within. It won't be necessarily someone from outside the system. I don't think it'll be a veteran, et cetera. I think they've got to rely on the youth.

[00:07:00] But that's all unofficial, so watch this space. Now Matthew's in Bali. How good's that? Watching from Bali. Up, up. Hope you're having fun over there, Matthew. Adam says he's upset we couldn't keep Puru. He's spewing we couldn't keep Puru. I think that, as I said, I think it's happy days for him, happy days for the club, because he will get more of a chance to play first grade.

[00:07:27] And it means Riley Pollard will get a bit of a push. So I think there's benefits everywhere. But he's been really good for us, Nephi. I have to say the criticism he cops around town is a little bit unfair from certain circles. I think that every time he's played first grade for us, what was it, three or four games? I'd have to look it up. But he was really good. So nothing but praise for the young fella.

[00:07:53] Now Sean says, my son Hudson says, poor Siffa, but bring on Herbert Puru to replace him. Well, what's the time? Oh, we're almost there, guys and girls. We will have that team for you really shortly. But Siffa's going to be okay. Tell your son he's going to be okay. At this point, only going to be a week or two. So not too bad. Christian says, once the money's freed up, we have some money to throw real money at Kennedy. Look, I hope for Kennedy's sake that's the case.

[00:08:23] Let's see what happens. Go listen to the Kieran episode yesterday. We have a very topical question about where Will Kennedy stands in club history and where he will stand if and when we win the comp. And it's pretty chatty. And that comes up that subject as well, Christian. Adam says, is E.T. stepping up into a role at the club? Now, is that joke or serious? I don't know if that's what's going on there.

[00:08:49] But as far as I know, he's just an ambassador for the club and always there to do things for us when we need him, promotionally especially. But I don't know if that's a serious question. Adam, apologies. If it is, apologies. You know, all good. Hope everyone's doing well on this Tuesday afternoon. So we have some more people over on the Instagram. Jay says, Darren Murray doing a great job with Pathways since 50's been coach. Absolutely. Joe says, we lost Puru. We lost Nephi. Yes.

[00:09:20] 4JRG3 says, at first I thought no better time of debut. Gabriel, we're locked in the top four. I wonder if we're locked. We're playing the worst team in history, low pressure stakes. But then I thought about keeping Heroti's legs warm in first grade in case we need him to come in during the finals. So he wants Heroti. Well, I'll tell you in a minute what's going on there. Ellie's there. Joe says, will both Puru brothers leave? I don't believe that's the case. I don't need to worry about that at this point.

[00:09:49] Connor says, I'm so sad Nephi's leaving, but I think we can have more opportunities at the Bears anyway. Yep, that's true. That's true. Hello to our friend Retro Rugba League. And there's a bunch of other talented people there. I'm not going to go through right now. But that's what's happening in NRL dub. So NRL. Haradi in. Iro out. I think it'll be one game only for Iro. Like, wait and see on that. But it should be one game only.

[00:15:37] And Sifitalakai out. Again, probably one to two weeks. Waiting on news for that. If it's broken already elsewhere, I'm not looking. I apologize. The bench looking like Puru. Burns. Kofusi. Hazleton. And coach has thrown a smokey with Michael Gabriel in 18. But you'd think if Haradi's named, he's named. Let's get to some comments. Sorry to keep you waiting. Adam said he saw a post about ET today and thought I might have heard something. I haven't. But I haven't really been keeping up to date.

[00:16:07] Today I've been doing other things. So hopefully, I don't know what role he would be doing. But I know he does a lot of ambassador work. I can tell you that behind the scenes. Wes said, I noticed Wade Graham was in the box last week. Your eyes did not deceive you. I was blessed to walk into the ground with the great man. And I didn't know he was heading up to the box, had the beanie on. So kind of hurt having Wade Graham up there, I tell you.

[00:16:34] Sean King says, yes, we are. Well, he says he's leaning towards a debut or the ever-reliable Mr. Fix-It Haradi. So I think it's the right move. I know it's going to upset a lot of people. I mean, Michael Gabriel has been hot and cold in Cup. And I'm someone who's not a huge believer in everyone in Cup who kills or doesn't kill it,

[00:17:03] then rises to the NRL and has a great time. By that, I mean we've seen guys play really good in Cup and kind of go average and kill it in NRL. I think you rise to the best when you're playing the best is what I'm trying to say. But he hasn't been going – he's been indifferent. So – and I think there's been some niggles in between some games and that kind of thing.

[00:17:28] So I think it's probably safer to go with Haradi because we are looking to win games no matter what. We're not looking to blood guys. We're not looking to, I mean, necessarily rest some players. So it's just all about winning at this point. So I appreciate that Michael is the future and Haradi will be the past. But you've just got to weigh up who's going to do the better job, the most consistent job,

[00:17:53] who is going to rock the boat the least, who is going to cause the least disruption. And I don't hate it. But I'm not suggesting in two years' time Michael Gabriel won't be killing it. I'm just saying that this week I don't mind Haradi being there, especially in the centers. We know he's not a great winger. But center, he can sort of hold down against the Dragons. You'd think it's the right move. Alex has a great point. Depending on how you feel about going to Cogra.

[00:18:23] He said, let's pack the heel, Sharks fans, and make some noise. Now, I know a lot of people are heading over there. I think that now that the Sharks are really on their way, and I mean this respectfully, I think a lot of fans are really buying in, which is awesome. And I think that you'll see more Shark representation at a lot of the games. And I think that'll start with Cogra, because it's only across the bridge. I just don't like going there. You heard what I said on the Kieran show a week and a half ago. I'm not going to repeat it. It started with the word.

[00:18:50] The word started with the letter S, and it had the words hit hole in the middle of it. Uh-oh. So let's go to Cogra, and let's smoke these guys, and let's punish them. And I've been doing the numbers today on the Dragons, and there's no reason not to win this game. So Roger says, love the team. Great to see Gabrielle in amongst it. Thank you, Roger. Hope you're well.

[00:19:18] Alex is saying, sounds like a debut smoke and mirrors. That's an interesting take, and I'm not ruling it out. But I'm going off what I'm seeing. So should that not be the case? Well, there you go. Alex thinks it's not the case. I appreciate that. Now, over on the Instagram. All right. JG3 says, Fitzy won't let Hoheppa leave. He knows he'll play a massive role next year with Cam and Talakai leaving. That's a good point.

[00:19:49] Ellie just read that Siffa's injury is only a minor strain. Up, up. Thank goodness. Thank goodness. Thank goodness. I mean, boy, if you're watching the postgame show, you would have seen me in a depression I haven't felt for a while. Sethi says, go the Sharks. Barnsley has joined. The merch king. Clevo says, if Coach Fitz thinks Heroddy is the way to go, then after the last two or three months, who are we to argue? And this time last year,

[00:20:18] he arguably should have kept Ramien out of the center spot when he filled in there. He also says, ah, very important news. Don't forget to let everyone know we're storming the field if Nico kicks the 36th goal on Sunday. So he needs four goals to do that. And if we get in trouble, you didn't hear it from me or the Shark cast, as Luke Lewis calls it. I'll tell you what, Luke Lewis can pay the bills for us. I'll tell you that. Pay the fines. Either him or Steve Mace.

[00:20:46] And I'm sure either of them would do it for the Shark cast. They're both big fans of the Shark cast. Nico Hines. What a freak. How good. How good. How good is it to be a Sharks fan right now? Aren't you glad you stuck around? I know some people, believe it or not, stopped watching for some reason. You know what the other interesting thing is, guys and girls? I've been doing a lot of number crunching today. Correct me if I'm wrong. This year, we haven't lost more than two games in a row. Is that right? It's three at worst. I'm pretty sure it's two.

[00:21:15] We've only lost a handful of games. But remember when the world was caving in on all of us? Because we lost a game or two? This is what Fitzgibbon does. He doesn't lose very often. And it's a good time to be a Shark. And I'm getting pretty excited. Craig is thinking like, Cleaver, any chance we should storm the field if Nico breaks the goal-kicking record? Same thing he said. Craig, do it. Do it in a group. Don't do it on your own. Get a whole group of you to do it.

[00:21:47] And don't say, the Shark cast told you to do it. But you can get Luke Lewis or Steve Mace to pay the fines if you need to. But yeah, I think it'd be amazing. It'd be horrible if for whatever reason he did that. We stormed the field. Then we lost the game or something. But that's not going to happen. Because A, we're not going to lose. And B, he's kicking four goals. We've scored four tries. We're up 24-something. I like those odds. I'm just real happy for Nico.

[00:22:16] He's a good chap. And he's been through a lot. And he goes through a lot. I know he gets paid a lot to do all that. And he gets a lot of benefits in his life for being a superstar. But he's really put up with a lot. And he's been disrespected a lot. His family's been disrespected. Like the whole thing. And it's just, as he would tell you, he hasn't done anything yet. He hasn't broken a record. He hasn't won a comp. But it's great to see him. It's great to see Trindle in record-breaking form. And every night I'm watching all these shows that are on.

[00:22:46] And every night it's like, well, you know what happens when it gets to the finals. And I'm waiting for him to say, yeah, last year they won two and almost won the prelim. And they always say we got knocked out in straight sets. And it's really frustrating because that was in 22, yeah? Last year wasn't straight sets. Year before wasn't straight sets. So I don't like the fact that that's how we're known. It kind of annoys me because it's just mainly because it's not true.

[00:23:15] It's not true. And it's not fair. And it diminishes what these guys are going through and what they're doing. So screw everyone except for us up, up, Cronulla. Now, Sharks, Dragons, local derby. I'm pumped. I know you're all pumped. Let me tell you a little bit about the derby. Now, the derby's only been going since 99 because the Dragons only started in 99.

[00:23:43] They've won one comp in that time, which is terrific. That's sort of better ratio than what we've done. We've got one in 50. They've got one in 25 years or whatever. So played 57 times. Sharks have won 32. Dragons have won 24. And I know a bunch of you remember the one drawn match. Here's the good news. Under Craig Fitzgibbon, we've won eight of nine derbies. So all Fitz he does is beat Manly and he beats Dragons, our two biggest rivals, you'd think.

[00:24:14] And he's won eight of nine. The one loss was in the corresponding round last year at Cogra. So that's a bit of a coincidence. You know, that's a bit of a... If you're a superstitious person, maybe that's something to kind of look at. But Craig says the media love putting the boot in. I mean, I'm not disagreeing with you, Craig, but I don't even think it's that. I just think it's naivety. I think it's laziness. I think it's people just follow what they hear.

[00:24:44] Oh, yeah, the Sharks, they're not good in finals. Well, hang on a sec. We won two of three last year. We won one of three the year before, et cetera, et cetera. Like, that's not true. It's not true. And under Craig Fitzgibbon, things are only getting better. They're not getting worse. So I don't know if it's they like to put the boot in. I just think it's a lazy take, right? That's my opinion. I respect yours, though, Craig, for sure. But Fitzy loves to beat the Dragons.

[00:25:13] And we've won five of the past six at Stinky Cogra. We didn't have much luck before that. But we've won five of the past six, the one loss corresponding round last year. While I've got you all, I want to remind you, if you didn't hear before, that on sharks.com.au, they're going to have a Phil Dottie interview, more of a piece, a history piece on him, written by our friend Ash Taylor, who caught up with the great Phil Dottie. Phil Dottie was a winger, mostly, I'm pretty sure, in the 80s,

[00:25:43] played some games for us, a lot more in lower grade, played some first grade, but recognized as the first Aboriginal Indigenous person to play for the club. I believe that's correct in saying that. And this week and next week is Indigenous rounds, playing in the jerseys, etc. So a lot to play for, proud history. And Phil Dottie was kind of almost the start of it, I guess you could say. So check out that on sharks.com.au. And Ash does a good job there, as most of you should know.

[00:26:14] So that's what's going on in Shark Land. Who do you like at the Dragons, in all seriousness? Like who's going to do some damage for them, do you think? I look at the team and, you know, a guy like Setu 2 on the wing, who kind of reminds me of our boy Ronaldo in the early days. There's a lot of errors, but there's a lot of good stuff. Alex is saying no one. He's really feeling derby week.

[00:26:44] I love it. A guy like Setu 2 will maybe score two tries, let two tries in, a lot of run meters. And I think that a guy like King Tongi at 5'8", a little bit unpredictable. We know what Kyle's going to do, just play sort of hard and direct. The rest of them, it's very workmanlike. They're probably going to want to get a bit of a grind and they're probably going to want a 14-12 kind of game where they can sneak a late try or whatever and try and win. I think if we can sort of get to 18 or more points,

[00:27:12] and we should because we're averaging 30 points a game, I think if we can get to sort of 18, 24 points, we're in a good zone and we should be able to do everything with our defense and it should all be okay. Just looking at their team without even being too smart, there's not a lot of danger there for me personally. I mean, you can see guys like Agutherson trying to play out of his skin for a position next year. There's a lot of moving in this Dragons team for next year, who's staying, who's going, fighting positions. And that's always a danger, I think.

[00:27:42] At Cogra, I'm not sure about the weather just yet. Someone else can help me out with that. But they've got a lot to play for in a lot of ways and they've got nothing to play for in a lot of ways and that's kind of dangerous. The Sharks need to turn up fully ready mentally and physically and they'll win the game. And when I say that, I don't mean just turning up. Like, turn up with conviction, with your completions, your kick chase, do all that sort of thing and you will win this game. And that's what we need to do.

[00:28:12] We have to do it. It's a must-win game. Every game is must-win against Dragons. At Cogra is must-win. I think the loss last year there is going to help us this year. They're a team that doesn't forget. The players, the coaches in particular, do not forget losses. And that's a game we should have won and we didn't. So I think that's going to be a benefit this year. We're going to have a bunch of black, white and blue out there. As I said, we're starting to believe that something special is in the mix here, which I think it is. Let's get out there and wreak some havoc. Let's go Sharks.

[00:28:42] Brendan Manahan. Good mate of mine. He says, I hate this game. So bring me some confidence. They've booked some seats to sit with the merge faithful. And Brendan is a very astute, like all of our listeners and viewers, astute student of the game. He's often badgering me at games in the upper Andrew Reading House and has been for, I don't know, 20 years or something. And I'll say this.

[00:29:12] Brendan is a – Brendan's – I put him in the camp of a warrior more than a, we got this. So Brendan, don't worry. We have got this. And here's why. Our team won through to whatever is better than theirs. Do I need to do that for you right now? Gutherson, Kennedy. Setitu, Katoa. Moses Suli, Jesse Ramian. Okay. Valentine Holmes, Marwini Harati. On his good day, Valentine's obviously the greatest player to ever play the game.

[00:29:41] On his bad day, he's not against Harati. Sloan versus North Harlow. Trindle and Hines versus King Tonga and Kyle Flanagan. Front row, Pacifica Tonga versus Finoa Blake. That'll be an awesome matchup. Our guy wins. Cook versus Braley. Emre Gula versus Jesse Colquhoun. Egan Stewart-Couchman against Nikara Wilton-McInnes.

Center Michael Gabriel has been named in Jumper 18 and is a chance to make his NRL debut if called up a chance. And some stats from last year as well. They are playing in their Indigenous jersey. [00:36:07] Number one is you've got to win the game and you've got to keep marching towards the finals and to title town. That's all we care about. Next year, right now, is not a factor. It's all about the next five games and the finals. There cannot be any dispute over that. So it's all about what's going to get you there. So I would suggest Future Dude, in my opinion only, that would be a no. I don't think they would do that. I think it's getting too fancy.

[00:36:36] I think it's getting too, I don't know, a bit, not messy, but just a bit, why are we doing this? I think, why can't the guy wait? You know, I don't think there's an urgency for him to come in. He can come in when he's ready and when he's needed. So if that's not this week starting, then I probably wouldn't do that. So much to play for against them. Yeah, absolutely. And I have to believe that's what's going on, guys and girls. I know that we're all worried and we're warriors and we worry about them thinking all these things. I can tell you this right now. This is my belief.

[00:37:30] The Sharks NRL team, coaching staff, but the team, the players themselves, do not walk around thinking, we're going to win this game by 50. We are shoe-ins to win this game. They know because they've been in this spot and this is their livelihood. They're experts in these fields. We may think we're experts as podcast hosts and as viewers and as punters. They're the experts.

[00:37:56] They know what it's like to get lapped when they shouldn't be. They know how close they are to having a real shot at the title, which is now, right? They're not walking around with the complacency. If the complacency creeps in, it's not consciously doing so. I know that's a simple and obvious statement, but they're not walking around thinking they're God's gift to rugby league. They're enjoying it. They're having a great time. They're having fun.

[00:38:25] And they're where they want to be, more or less. I think they want to be, you know, first or second. But I can tell you they're not walking around just going, ah, Dragons, it's a win. They know. Last year, it was the same thing last year. We were in a good spot. Round 23 at that. S-hole over at Coggera. And we lost. We lost by eight points, I think. They know what that's like. It's still real. It's still fresh. It's still real. It'll be dammit.
