[00:02:07] There might be one that's going around

[00:02:16] And reviewing maybe potentially a bit of a week

[00:02:21] A win on the weekend which went down very well with me

[00:02:23] Yeah we'll get into that right away

[00:02:25] We can tell you that we're sitting in first place

[00:02:27] Which is quite remarkable really given the injury toll

[00:02:31] And I guess even some of the performances this year

[00:02:35] But we're sitting in first place after six rounds

[00:02:38] The buyers help us get us there as well

[00:02:41] Let's not sugarcoat that

[00:02:42] But first time since 2016 Josh

[00:02:44] Which is pretty significant that year

[00:02:47] And I'm not suggesting that's where we are now

[00:02:50] But there is very little to complain about in my opinion

[00:02:54] What more do you want?

[00:02:56] First place is as good as it gets right?

[00:02:59] I mean obviously the performances could always be better

[00:03:02] But at the moment if you're first

[00:03:05] You're going pretty well I reckon

[00:03:07] First and best the Mighty Sharks 134-22

[00:03:12] The game against South Sydney on Saturday

[00:03:15] It was more tightly contested than what the score might suggest

[00:03:19] But I also do think those 22 points

[00:03:21] Flatter the rabbitose a little bit

[00:03:23] Not in their effort but in their execution

[00:03:26] And their skill on the night

[00:03:27] They were missing a chunk of first graders

[00:03:29] Through injury, suspension and form appraisals I guess

[00:03:34] And then on the night as you would have seen

[00:03:36] Watching the game half their team were out injured

[00:03:39] They were down to one man on the bench

[00:03:40] We know what that's like

[00:03:41] They dug in their heels

[00:03:44] They scrapped and clawed

[00:03:46] For a while went toe-to-toe with us

[00:03:48] Which was impressive

[00:03:50] But I never at any point Josh

[00:03:52] Overly concerned as you would have seen

[00:03:54] Via my text messages

[00:03:56] And I think overall

[00:03:59] A pretty impressive performance

[00:04:01] Given the circumstances leading into the game

[00:04:04] The pressure on South Sydney

[00:04:06] Which we felt as a Sharks organization

[00:04:11] That pressure was some of the most we've seen

[00:04:13] In recent rugby league times

[00:04:15] So I think to get through all that

[00:04:17] Unscathed is pretty good

[00:04:19] Yeah I mean during the weekend

[00:04:21] Up to the game injury

[00:04:22] The game felt like only one team was playing

[00:04:24] With all the talk around South

[00:04:26] Which is fine

[00:04:27] I mean sometimes that's how we like it

[00:04:29] I do think generally that we dominated the game

[00:04:31] In large chunks

[00:04:34] With just little mistakes here and there

[00:04:37] And maybe a slight lack of concentration

[00:04:39] That led to some South Sharks

[00:04:41] But I thought overall

[00:04:42] We handled them quite well

[00:04:44] And they had a lot to play for

[00:04:46] As we've mentioned ad nauseam

[00:04:48] That you know when you get hammered

[00:04:50] With media like they have been

[00:04:52] Players unhappy

[00:04:53] Coaches getting sacked

[00:04:55] You know all those sorts of things

[00:04:56] I thought we did pretty well to

[00:04:58] Come out of that with a fairly convincing win

[00:05:00] At the end

[00:05:01] Yeah so we ended up with 27 missed tackles

[00:05:03] We lost the penalty count 6-2

[00:05:05] I believe we lost the set restart

[00:05:07] By a bit as well

[00:05:09] But we did make more line breaks

[00:05:11] We, sorry when I say missed tackles

[00:05:13] We missed a lot less than what they did

[00:05:16] In 27 for us these days isn't too bad

[00:05:18] We had more offloads

[00:05:20] We completed pretty good

[00:05:22] As did they to be fair

[00:05:24] We only had 26 tackles in the opposition

[00:05:26] 20 they had almost double that

[00:05:28] But we managed to rack up 34 points

[00:05:31] Some really cool tries

[00:05:33] And I think it's fair to say

[00:05:35] Man of the match for possibly

[00:05:37] Not the first time this year

[00:05:39] Was the number 5

[00:05:41] Ronaldo Sui

[00:05:42] Ronaldo Militalo

[00:05:44] I'm only doing the Sui

[00:05:46] That's what my son does

[00:05:47] I don't really care for that gentleman

[00:05:49] Nor do I even associate that with

[00:05:51] Al Rinaldo who's the best Ronaldo in the world

[00:05:53] Man he's turned a corner as far as performance

[00:05:55] And attitude goes

[00:05:56] Man he's just playing the lights out at the moment

[00:05:59] Just both ends of the ball

[00:06:02] There was probably only the one blemish

[00:06:04] On his game was that one jam in

[00:06:06] That led to a try

[00:06:08] But besides that you've got to say

[00:06:10] Almost a perfect wingers game

[00:06:12] His meters were good

[00:06:14] His try contributions, his tries

[00:06:16] His defence for 95%

[00:06:19] That game was excellent

[00:06:21] And still so young

[00:06:23] And he's what fifth on the all time sharks

[00:06:25] Try scoring list now

[00:06:27] Man the sky is the limit

[00:06:29] It's important to note the jam in

[00:06:31] Also saved a try out too as well

[00:06:33] So it was worth doing

[00:06:35] Just needs to get it perfect

[00:06:37] And then he'll have a perfect game basically

[00:06:40] But he was far and wide

[00:06:43] In a team that didn't really have any bad performance

[00:06:46] He was easily the best one out there

[00:06:48] I think just the back five

[00:06:51] It seems to be and hopefully that trend continues this week

[00:06:54] But it seems to be whoever you put in that back five

[00:06:57] The sharks team of 2024

[00:07:00] Are heavily relying on them to do the dirty work

[00:07:03] At this point I don't really care who does it

[00:07:05] As long as it gets done so that's not an issue for me

[00:07:08] But they're relying on them and they're coming through

[00:07:11] In attack and defence

[00:07:14] Even things like kick chase

[00:07:16] Everything seems to be on point with this back five

[00:07:19] It starts with Will Kennedy

[00:07:21] I know he's not as flash as what he has been the last few years

[00:07:24] But he's getting a job done

[00:07:26] Both wingers are outstanding

[00:07:28] Kato is in great form

[00:07:30] Jesse Ramian quite a cheaver out there

[00:07:32] Doing really well in my opinion

[00:07:34] And Karl Iroh who holds his spot for another week

[00:07:37] He ran for over 130 metres

[00:07:39] And didn't miss a tackle made 18

[00:07:42] Like he's solid as

[00:07:44] So they're getting the job done in the back five

[00:07:47] Yeah I actually did a little bit of digging on Karl

[00:07:51] From his three games in first grade

[00:07:53] He has not missed a tackle

[00:07:55] I mean obviously he's not making 30 or 40 a game

[00:07:58] You don't want to send it a missed tackle

[00:08:00] You can have a second row of missed tackles

[00:08:02] You can have a proper missed tackles

[00:08:04] You don't want to send a missing tackles

[00:08:06] It speaks to how impressive he's been

[00:08:08] There was one massive one on one tackle he made late in the game

[00:08:11] That was just super impressive

[00:08:13] And that was a criticism of him in the lower grades

[00:08:16] Was his ability to hit and stick

[00:08:18] He was hitting and sticking

[00:08:20] He was whacking guys

[00:08:22] He was putting his hand up so much

[00:08:24] For so many carries

[00:08:26] He had 19 runs of the ball

[00:08:28] That's a great effort from any centre

[00:08:30] We were worried about losing that

[00:08:32] From Sifa right

[00:08:34] Getting taken out of that centre spot

[00:08:36] Making 160-70 metres a game

[00:08:39] Kale's

[00:08:41] He's doing a really good job of replacing that

[00:08:45] Yeah he is

[00:08:46] He is and we'll see again this week how that goes

[00:08:49] I would dare say against the best back line

[00:08:52] Although they are missing Murray to Lugge

[00:08:54] Which we'll talk about later on

[00:08:55] But a very good back line coming in to meet them

[00:08:57] So it's going to be a big test

[00:08:59] There will be a debutant as well which we'll get into

[00:09:01] But the Souths game was terrific

[00:09:03] I thought Braden Trindle was the dominant half

[00:09:06] Now Disclaimer, Nico Hines had a great game

[00:09:09] Disclaimer, he got two Dali end points

[00:09:12] Disclaimer, I don't really care

[00:09:14] Good, bad and different

[00:09:16] I mean I care that it's good but I'm not going to criticise him for getting to

[00:09:19] He wasn't on my 3-2-1s

[00:09:21] I don't think he was on any of our

[00:09:23] Team, our Sharkast team lists of 3-2-1s

[00:09:26] But he had a really good game, Nico Hines

[00:09:28] He's having a good year

[00:09:29] But Braden Trindle

[00:09:31] He had the 3-3s compared to Nico's 2

[00:09:34] He kicked for more metres

[00:09:36] And was a little bit more dominant than Nico

[00:09:39] I won't say he was tremendously more dominant

[00:09:42] But he was a little bit more dominant

[00:09:44] In how you would define Harve's being dominant

[00:09:47] And I think it's a really good sign

[00:09:49] I think it's excellent

[00:09:50] I thought he had one of his best games in first grade

[00:09:53] Of his career so far

[00:09:55] Popping around everywhere

[00:09:56] Was always looking to be creative

[00:09:59] He was cut out balls or kicks in behind

[00:10:02] Short balls to his second rower

[00:10:04] Like he was always trying something different

[00:10:06] Which I love in Harve's

[00:10:08] That he's not going to the same tactics all the time

[00:10:11] Finding it very interesting as well

[00:10:13] Going by the stats

[00:10:14] And this has been a recurring theme for the year

[00:10:16] That Nico is making almost double the tackles that Braden is every week

[00:10:20] So teams are looking to shut down Nico

[00:10:22] And make Tyra him out by making him work defensively

[00:10:25] Trindle made 10 tackles on the weekend

[00:10:27] And this is the case, Annie

[00:10:28] Nico made 28

[00:10:30] So teams are really honing in on trying to shut down Nico and Tyra him out

[00:10:35] Which is opening up opportunities for Braden

[00:10:37] So I think when people say that Nico's not playing well

[00:10:40] They're playing excellent as a Harve's pairing

[00:10:42] Because that's what you do if one's getting dominated

[00:10:45] The other one takes over

[00:10:46] Which I think we lacked last year with Maddie Moylan

[00:10:48] So I'm really loving the development of their Harve's pairing

[00:10:52] That's a great point you make

[00:10:53] 28 tackles for a Harve's

[00:10:55] Too many and he did a good job

[00:10:57] There was one miss

[00:10:58] I think he slipped in the process for one of the tries

[00:11:00] But overall, good defensive effort from Nico

[00:11:03] And what can he do?

[00:11:05] They're running out and he's got to make tackles

[00:11:06] I mean they can do something

[00:11:08] If this becomes a major issue

[00:11:10] Which I don't think it will

[00:11:11] But if it does, they can move him around the field

[00:11:12] They can hide him if they need to

[00:11:14] When I say hide

[00:11:15] Not because he can't defend

[00:11:16] But to save him or whatever

[00:11:17] But we're coming first

[00:11:19] I mean it's working

[00:11:20] Everything's fine as far as that goes

[00:11:22] And there's room there for them to

[00:11:24] I guess think it with how they play in the Harve's

[00:11:27] And that will be a constant learning curve

[00:11:29] They're very young in their careers as Harve's

[00:11:32] And also obviously together even younger

[00:11:34] Great effort by the Harve's

[00:11:35] The kicking game was pretty good

[00:11:36] I thought we...

[00:11:38] Yeah, there was a part of the game

[00:11:40] In the second half where Souths kind of had a sniff

[00:11:42] We got our act back together

[00:11:44] And I didn't even think we were playing that badly

[00:11:46] At the time it was more just Souths had some momentum

[00:11:49] That's how the game is these days

[00:11:50] You can't have momentum for 80 minutes really

[00:11:53] There might be the game or two a year that we do

[00:11:55] But the other team's always going to have a shot at some point

[00:11:58] And we held them off pretty good

[00:12:00] Like I know it got within sort of six points

[00:12:02] At some parts of the game

[00:12:04] But I think it's just the way it was going

[00:12:07] Souths were just so high on emotion

[00:12:10] They could have been down to seven guys

[00:12:12] And they still wouldn't have given up

[00:12:13] Like it was just one of those games

[00:12:15] So I think to run away with the game

[00:12:17] Like we did with the margin difference

[00:12:19] I think it's just a great sign

[00:12:21] Ford Pack was just solid

[00:12:23] Like they didn't play the lights out

[00:12:25] But they did enough to get us around the field

[00:12:28] And thought that another contender for Man of the Match

[00:12:32] Was the hooker who led them around really well

[00:12:34] Blake Brailey

[00:12:35] He's in, I would dare say, career best form

[00:12:38] Because he's being so consistent about it

[00:12:40] He's running more

[00:12:42] He's engaging the line more solid as ever in defence

[00:12:46] And there's just a real urgency to his game

[00:12:49] Which we, to be honest, have never seen

[00:12:51] This is what we wanted

[00:12:52] This is the Blake that we knew he could be

[00:12:54] And I think he can still get even better

[00:12:56] I'm just kind of blown away at the transformation this year

[00:13:00] I mean, I am but I'm not

[00:13:02] I mean, because I knew how good he is

[00:13:04] But to actually see it in action for a month straight now

[00:13:08] Is just so...

[00:13:10] It makes me so happy

[00:13:11] Because he could be one of like a top three hooker

[00:13:14] Like he really could be with the talent he has

[00:13:17] And he's running again

[00:13:18] He looks a yard quicker

[00:13:20] He looks stronger

[00:13:22] He looks more confident

[00:13:24] And like there's a potential

[00:13:26] If he keeps playing like this for another two years

[00:13:30] It'll be the origin hooker

[00:13:32] I have no doubts about that

[00:13:33] He could play origin

[00:13:34] So...

[00:13:35] I mean, I'm looking more short-term

[00:13:37] I'm hoping and I'm not being smart

[00:13:39] I'm hoping he plays like this for the next month

[00:13:41] Then he'll have two months of great football

[00:13:43] Like I think it's going to be a gradual thing for him still

[00:13:45] But if you have a great hooker

[00:13:48] And so in the past he's been good with the occasional great game

[00:13:51] He's been a good hooker

[00:13:52] If you have a great hooker

[00:13:53] Your game just goes to other dimensions

[00:13:56] As we've seen this year

[00:13:57] Your results, everything about you

[00:13:59] If you've got a guy that's catching and passing

[00:14:02] Okay, that's fine

[00:14:03] If you can do that well, that's a bonus

[00:14:05] But to do all the other stuff

[00:14:07] That the best guys in the game do

[00:14:09] Is what you need to be an elite team

[00:14:12] And we're coming first

[00:14:14] We're not necessarily playing elite

[00:14:15] But we're playing good

[00:14:16] We're in an elite position

[00:14:18] And that's largely with his new attitude

[00:14:23] To thank for that

[00:14:24] We've seen these in talks with the origin camp

[00:14:27] I have no doubt he'll be part of the camp

[00:14:29] I don't think you'll necessarily play

[00:14:31] But you never know your luck

[00:14:32] If someone goes down or whatever

[00:14:34] But just, yeah

[00:14:35] It's refreshing to see

[00:14:36] It's refreshing as watchers of this team

[00:14:39] To see the guy from dummy half

[00:14:41] Back himself

[00:14:42] And I think it's an obvious statement, Josh

[00:14:44] But he's going to need to do it

[00:14:45] Against the big teams coming up

[00:14:47] In that month of competitive matches

[00:14:51] That we have

[00:14:52] And when I see him do it against Penrith

[00:14:54] When I see it do it against Melbourne

[00:14:57] Et cetera

[00:14:58] Then I'll be completely stoked

[00:15:01] And ready to sort of declare

[00:15:03] This is him and his best

[00:15:05] I think it is now

[00:15:07] But to be fair running around

[00:15:08] Against South Sydney guys

[00:15:09] Who are second graders

[00:15:10] He's going to have to do that

[00:15:12] Against those big teams

[00:15:13] Because we won't win without him doing it

[00:15:15] Biggest compliment I can give him

[00:15:17] Is he only has three runs

[00:15:19] To his name on the stats

[00:15:20] But he would have engaged the markers

[00:15:21] And got out of hooker ten times

[00:15:23] On the weekend

[00:15:24] And that's

[00:15:26] It's so beneficial to the forwards

[00:15:28] And you can see him and McKinnis

[00:15:30] Forming a great little partnership

[00:15:32] When he gets out

[00:15:33] And engages the markers

[00:15:34] And then McKinnis is running

[00:15:35] That underline

[00:15:36] Or he's running back into the markers

[00:15:38] He's pinching seven, eight, ten metres of run

[00:15:40] And there's no coincidence that McKinnis

[00:15:42] Is a way up from the past few years

[00:15:45] And that's thanks to a good hooker

[00:15:47] And a good hooker brings his forwards onto the ball

[00:15:49] We look so much more commanding in the middle

[00:15:51] When he was doing that

[00:15:52] Yeah, we saw the return of Taby Rudolph

[00:15:55] A bit of a surprise on the bench

[00:15:57] Ended up playing almost half the game

[00:15:59] And had a terrific game

[00:16:01] So it's good to see him back in the rotation

[00:16:04] And there's more troops coming back

[00:16:07] Which we'll talk about later on

[00:16:09] But overall solid forward contribution

[00:16:13] From everyone

[00:16:14] I thought Siffa's first in-off

[00:16:16] The bench was really good, really powerful

[00:16:18] A couple of hit-ups in the first set

[00:16:20] That he played

[00:16:22] And just a very solid outfit

[00:16:25] From the forwards

[00:16:26] Again, not playing a great forward

[00:16:28] Park but you only give what you're given

[00:16:30] And they got the job done

[00:16:32] I thought overall it's a great team performance

[00:16:35] Josh, with two or three outstanding

[00:16:39] Solo performances in there

[00:16:41] But a good team effort

[00:16:43] Not getting down when things went against them

[00:16:46] Not getting the shakes

[00:16:48] When the other team had a sniff

[00:16:51] It was a small but hostile crowd

[00:16:53] There were shark spans there

[00:16:55] Which is awesome

[00:16:56] It's one that a lot of people had us losing

[00:16:59] For some, not some reason

[00:17:01] For the kind of made-up reason

[00:17:03] That bad luck's gonna go against us

[00:17:05] That whole thing which we discussed a lot on the show

[00:17:07] And we don't have to keep talking about it

[00:17:09] The amusing thing I thought, Josh

[00:17:11] Was a lot of people were unhappy with the performance

[00:17:14] I think they thought we should have won by 50 or whatever

[00:17:18] Whereas I'm like, we played really good

[00:17:21] We beat a team

[00:17:23] A lot of people said we wouldn't beat

[00:17:25] We did it

[00:17:26] I thought we did it pretty easily

[00:17:28] The scoreline didn't suggest that at times

[00:17:31] At no point was I ever...

[00:17:33] And you know this because we were in communication

[00:17:35] At no point was I ever going, this isn't gonna happen

[00:17:37] And you know me, I'll say it to you

[00:17:39] I'll say, Josh, it's not gonna happen

[00:17:41] But at no point

[00:17:42] And I'm not saying, oh, I'm a hero

[00:17:44] I'm saying that was the performance

[00:17:46] It was a good performance from the sharks

[00:17:48] They did what they needed to do to win

[00:17:50] I think they might have been a period

[00:17:52] In that second half where they kind of put the cue

[00:17:54] And they're like, okay, the game's done

[00:17:56] And then when South made that comeback

[00:17:58] They turned it back on again

[00:18:00] Some might say we should have put the foot on the throat

[00:18:02] And put 40 on them

[00:18:04] It's round six

[00:18:05] We don't need to overload energy

[00:18:07] And go crazy now

[00:18:09] There's no point

[00:18:10] I just find some of the...

[00:18:12] Some of the criticism of the team a little

[00:18:15] Bizarre

[00:18:16] I think if people watched the game again

[00:18:19] They'd realize how dominant we really were

[00:18:21] And I think some of the criticism of the forward pack

[00:18:24] Has been out there a little bit

[00:18:26] We are playing to our strength

[00:18:28] If you don't do that as a coach

[00:18:30] You're not doing your job properly

[00:18:32] Our strength is our backs

[00:18:33] That's why we use them more

[00:18:34] Our forward pack, you know

[00:18:36] Isn't going to go make 150 metres

[00:18:38] The other thing Josh is

[00:18:39] With all respect to these two home braids

[00:18:41] Tom Hazleton and Oren Capucie

[00:18:43] Are not our top two props

[00:18:44] Yeah, they're benches

[00:18:45] And they're starting

[00:18:46] And they're doing an adequate

[00:18:48] If not above adequate job

[00:18:50] I wouldn't say they're doing an outstanding job

[00:18:52] But they're doing what they need to do

[00:18:54] And Hazleton has a huge future at the club

[00:18:56] And they've got a site in Miami

[00:18:57] And doing his job

[00:18:59] So I'm not going to be critical of those two guys

[00:19:01] Particularly when it's not their job

[00:19:03] To start the game

[00:19:04] And they're doing it

[00:19:05] And they're doing an okay, adequate

[00:19:07] Above adequate job

[00:19:09] Well Hazleton ran for 100 metres

[00:19:10] And made 34 tackles no mist

[00:19:12] I mean, it's pretty good steam

[00:19:14] Yeah, it is

[00:19:15] The other thing I'll say is

[00:19:17] About putting the foot to the throat

[00:19:19] I don't think there would be many teams out there

[00:19:21] That would have done that

[00:19:22] To that South Sydney team

[00:19:24] And you go back and you watch the way South Sydney played

[00:19:27] You can hear all the accolades from the commentators

[00:19:29] Whatever

[00:19:30] Yeah

[00:19:31] Watch it with your own eyes

[00:19:32] Like they were playing hard football

[00:19:34] That fullback was playing

[00:19:36] Some of the most aggressive football I've ever seen

[00:19:39] He's the shortest guy to play the game in a long time

[00:19:41] Yeah, he went off for a HIA

[00:19:43] Came back

[00:19:44] And played like his life depended on it

[00:19:46] And a lot of those guys were doing that

[00:19:48] Michael Cheekam wouldn't be in the top

[01:02:52] Each week because there is a tough month coming up

[01:02:54] So we need to put these ones in the bank

[01:03:00] We need to beat the cowboys

[01:03:02] Need to beat the raiders away which we know

[01:03:04] We can do definitely need to beat the

[01:03:06] The drags, the local Derby

[01:03:08] And then it gets a lot more serious

[01:03:10] And if you win those games

[01:03:12] You know the increased

[01:03:14] Media coverage

[01:03:16] Comes in, they're top two

[01:03:18] They're top four

[01:03:20] Can they beat the big teams

[01:03:22] Then it's up to us to knock over
