[00:02:18] You're a big supporter of the show and you and I got to know each other online,

[00:02:47] We were at the war as sorry not the war as we were at the South's game.

[00:02:51] That was a memorable game.

[00:02:52] But we had a good time and we did have a good time.

[00:02:55] And war is this week.

[00:02:57] Yes and I think you've had a good stand and I did go to the Dragon's game as well.

[00:03:04] Tell our listeners a little bit about the show and what you do.

[00:03:08] Yeah, so I work on a show on serious exam which is a satellite radio company which is

[00:03:15] different to what everyone is used to here.

[00:03:18] So in the car you've in America, you've got AMFM and then there's a satellite button

[00:03:22] and it's live everywhere in America and Canada.

[00:03:26] I flew to my way into producing the top 40 station and the morning show that they've

[00:03:31] got there.

[00:03:33] So I've been doing that for about seven years now in New York which is crazy.

[00:03:37] And I also have my own show on a Saturday called Ben Plus One which is when I get

[00:03:42] to meet and as the title says it's a plus one of some sort of celebrity that hangs

[00:03:48] out with me for the hour.

[00:03:49] So that's sort of my vibe in New York which is called we haven't really touched

[00:03:56] them too much you and I but we did have a brief conversation about recent guests you

[00:04:00] had.

[00:04:01] Yes, well you and Karen you're supposed to be live on on the part of the show.

[00:04:05] You're not looking around.

[00:04:09] So it was half time and the the famous sharks speakers at the stadium were pumping out

[00:04:16] music world class world class speakers and world class music as well.

[00:04:21] And you were asking about who have you had in the office the other day and you brought

[00:04:24] up Bon Jovi because Bon Jovi was playing that's as far as I know.

[00:04:29] And I was like, well yes actually a couple of years ago he did here is a photo that I

[00:04:34] haven't been in my phone.

[00:04:34] It was just very convenient that Bon Jovi was playing you asked about Bon Jovi and he

[00:04:38] was just on my show a couple of weeks before.

[00:04:41] Yeah and I'm sure the list is endless, which is amazing.

[00:04:43] I know you're a pop culture music tragic anyone who follows you.

[00:04:48] What's your handles for now?

[00:04:50] At Ben Harlem and spell H.A.R.L.U.M.

[00:04:55] Yes, we were just discussing off air.

[00:04:56] Not the mean streets.

[00:04:57] No and that is the issue in New York specifically that when your last name is Harlem but

[00:05:01] it's not school like the city of Harlem you always have to clarify and I almost wanted

[00:05:06] to register at Ben Harlem but with an E.M.

[00:05:09] and just set the buyer to you actually are looking for at Ben Harlem with my username

[00:05:13] but there is there is some musician that has a cat Ben Harlem the wrong spelling.

[00:05:19] Yeah, I'm still waiting for the Harlem Globe trod as to make a jersey with the right

[00:05:22] spelling on it and then maybe I'll be able to represent the great thing about the

[00:05:25] Harlem Globe trod is their endless and they never stop.

[00:05:29] No that's right exactly.

[00:05:31] So I saw them when I was maybe eight at the end of the time at Cinema Dad took me

[00:05:38] and yeah, I remember we had like really good seats like because I think maybe you know

[00:05:43] you can always get good seats to the Harlem Globe trod.

[00:05:45] I think that is correct.

[00:05:46] Yes, this is a next game of the garden.

[00:05:48] Yes and I sort of come in and out of memories of that because you and I talked about

[00:05:56] the Harlem Globe trod as before we started.

[00:05:58] Yes but now we're talking about it now.

[00:05:59] I just had this lightning bolt memory that I went and saw them and they did all the was amazing.

[00:06:04] Yes and that's my story.

[00:06:06] You think after all this time that the Washington jambles would like their recruitment

[00:06:09] agent would be better.

[00:06:11] Like you think they'd be able to get better players by now but we we lead their talent

[00:06:15] and recruitment department just aren't up to scratch with the rest of the the

[00:06:19] novelty basketball teams.

[00:06:21] Now we need to know about your shark fin them which is huge.

[00:06:26] Yes.

[00:06:26] How did it begin?

[00:06:28] Why is it so, etc.

[00:06:30] Shark from birth there are there are photos out there and a very very small custom made

[00:06:35] hoops jersey that my mom got made for me when I was a little little tiny kid.

[00:06:42] And one of my earliest memories sports related is watching watching the

[00:06:49] sharks play panoreth I think and when it was the hill and not the Monti port

[00:06:54] stands and like that's where all the flags and all the supporters were had big flags there.

[00:07:00] Yeah the big flags the trumpets everything going on that was that was everything.

[00:07:04] Without revealing your birthday approximately when was that when you were seeing the

[00:07:08] big flags in the mid 90s early 90s, mid 90s okay okay and that that was it the whole

[00:07:15] family has always been sharks fans and one of the highlights was that I went with my

[00:07:19] mom and my grandparents we all went to the grand final together in 2016.

[00:07:23] You're peeking to I know but I just wanted to just put it out there that it's been a

[00:07:28] family thing so I mean I was drafted in very early okay from your memory you started

[00:07:36] getting on board around mid 90s.

[00:07:38] Yes good time getting involved pretty decent time decent team a lot of fun yeah so it's

[00:07:45] been it's been up and down ever since as you know better than anyone.

[00:07:48] Yeah now we're gonna talk about your life as a fan throughout the episode because it's

[00:07:54] gonna relate to a bunch of things but I specifically want to hit you up about what the heck it's

[00:08:00] like being over there. Yes being a fan because I remember and we'll get into it but my first

[00:08:05] time I went to Americano 5 and I was like peeking on the sharks but it was hard yeah it's

[00:08:14] lot easier now but we'll get into it. I want to talk to you about the dragon's game as you

[00:08:19] where do you stand or see it what were you what were you doing. We were in a stand and we were

[00:08:25] sharks was we're on the sharks trial line for the first half. We visualised that okay yeah first time

[00:08:31] it went stadium and I really liked the stadium. Better than Cogra. Better than Cogra all the

[00:08:36] I am partial also to Cogra during the covid year. Well sure what we do maybe because I did go

[00:08:40] during covid years which meant that everything was much cleaner than usual because they had to

[00:08:48] Oh I definitely did it so I definitely did it. But yes was in the stand and watch the men,

[00:08:55] watch the old boys at half time. Yeah I only found out about this on Monday night about the old

[00:09:01] boys game. Yeah so that was fun to watch and then watch the women afterwards. Now what was

[00:09:06] the representation like in the crowd at peak time was it 30% chance? I would say close to 40 50%.

[00:09:15] Because I'm a nerd and listen to the commentary during the game and one of those guys.

[00:09:20] It was even mentioned I think in the ABC commentary they said oh look you're just looking

[00:09:24] out you can see that it is a very clear 50 50 here. So how do you do that? You just on your phone

[00:09:30] you put on ABC radio whatever. You can do that but there is a delay but if you bring I mean

[00:09:36] you could have your sports ears. Yes. If you have a certain type of radio you could tune into

[00:09:40] this sports ears frequencies. Or just being a nerd and bring a little radio and tune it into

[00:09:47] ABC, a little wire which is very handy because there's an FM now I'm getting real radio note.

[00:09:51] Yeah FM signal on an AM signal so much clearer. Ben I don't want to like speak

[00:09:55] in a way that will make you think I don't love you but that's really cute

[00:10:00] that you brought a radio to the in the stage. Of course I'm like the old person you see

[00:10:05] to swans game that's still marking off all the stats and everything while listening to their

[00:10:09] live whatever. It's not school to be fair I was with again my family and they are old and I

[00:10:14] want to make sure that the experience is as comfortable for them as it would be on the couch watching

[00:10:19] TV. Yes and if that means that I can give them one of my AirPods and they can listen to the commentary

[00:10:23] all right then you know what it's a win for everybody. That's lovely. You're a lovely person they're

[00:10:28] like that. Okay so let's get into the meet and tell us the game. Yeah I'm spoken about it on the show

[00:10:33] bit but I want to get your thoughts on it. I personally didn't think it was going to be that

[00:10:39] one sided especially the team that we ran out. Yes but from the opening set and you would

[00:10:45] have seen it from your seats just dominating particularly those forwards going the way they were

[00:10:50] winning the rock good kicking game yep they counted everything right yeah they pretty much did and

[00:10:56] it was I think it was pretty clear that a half time we probably should have been further ahead

[00:10:59] and that's the only worry that when it was pretty close at half time it's kind of like okay

[00:11:04] they're just staying in it and if they score first this is going to be really dangerous in the second

[00:11:09] half but for a team that and you've said it week after week on the plot here and everyone says

[00:11:13] it in the mail that couldn't start well for the first 20 minutes of these games if we keep watching

[00:11:19] it and we keep going why aren't they fixing it why aren't they fixing it this was a game where

[00:11:23] I was like they came out with intent they knew that the dragons had a lot to play for and it was

[00:11:27] very clear and I enjoyed that because that's one thing that it's like okay why aren't they fixing

[00:11:32] this well that game they fixed it and they came out yeah and for what should be quite an

[00:11:37] underwhelming it's like side because it's very much dodge-podge-putting random players in different

[00:11:43] positions you can you can expect a K will they're going to take a bit to to mesh and gel but

[00:11:49] like they came out and it was great and you knew from the first couple of sets it's like okay we're

[00:11:54] on here yeah that's a vibe you kind of what right it is it's a lot more fun no matter where

[00:12:00] you're watching a listening when you start well because at least you're in it like if you start

[00:12:05] well okay you could drop off but at least you have that start and they did it pretty easy I mean

[00:12:11] the dragons are working progress we understand that yep but that a lot to play for in front of the home

[00:12:16] crowd it's a Derby it's flaning and it was it was surprising but A we take it and B

[00:12:23] like we earned every acolyte that we got like they were just 11 to 17 awesome

[00:12:29] young rookie wing-on one side not a particularly old wing on the other side but almost the

[00:12:34] veteran in the stage that he's been around for six or seven years and played I don't know 15

[00:12:39] games in Harori that's on your edges yep and then you know we got Jesse Ram in the sinbion

[00:12:46] telecos not there Nico's to laught but I thought it was yeah a really great team effort

[00:12:54] one to 17 I love the way the coach is coaching at the moment yep he sort of had absent loads

[00:12:59] a she with his bansions different decisions here or there but I think he and his staff are right in

[00:13:05] the zone it's almost like they are coaching specifically weak on weak as to who they're playing

[00:13:13] now know that's a strange statement because you think well that's what the coach should do but

[00:13:17] a lot of the time they just worry about themselves and then the other team is almost an after

[00:13:21] thought because if you do your thing right you know you study a little bit in the other team

[00:13:26] but I get the feeling they're really studying the team and they're playing to a style that fits

[00:13:31] that and for around that you saw so many teams it had lots of lots to play for and either

[00:13:38] they aimed up or there are upsets and you know you go okay this is the round where no one's

[00:13:44] tipping is going to be 100% because we're now at the midi end of the season so it's going

[00:13:49] to be all unpredictable it was good to have a game where you're like we needed to win and win

[00:13:53] well and win big and we did yeah because it was easy again that we could have walked out and have

[00:13:58] lost yes 14 12 and gone up another missed opportunity there's another danger game that we lost

[00:14:04] yeah and I'm not someone who relies on the media to tell me how to think or feel or have

[00:14:10] expectations well if they were if you weren't if you were relying on the media to tell you about

[00:14:15] the sharks they're probably wouldn't be a sharks podcast because apparently we don't

[00:14:18] exist at the moment well that aside all week it was very much dragon heavy dhabi and I get it like

[00:14:26] they're on the way up they need to win yes I get all that we've got some injuries there were

[00:14:30] reasonably fully fit the missing flanagan junior through suspension so I understand how it was

[00:14:38] pretty even you know betting wise and that kind of thing but yeah the hype was all let's see what

[00:14:44] they got well that I have much and we did now this week it's you know are they the real deal again

[00:14:51] like that that storylines coming around pretty quick the shark's a real deal yes can they get past

[00:14:56] the hurdle and that's a realistic storyline I don't really care for it but it's obviously very real

[00:15:01] and up to us to change that story line but yeah given the fact that even I think some of our fan

[00:15:08] base thought this games a bit tight they swim it in it was it was easy you really couldn't

[00:15:15] ask for more if I'm being honest yeah like we can nitpick for the rest of the episode 100%

[00:15:21] but considering the circumstances considering the side considering what the dragons had to play

[00:15:26] for to come away with that win you're like okay this is satisfying this is where we need

[00:15:33] to be considering the circumstances at this type of the so on that subject have you seen the year

[00:15:40] up until now it's obviously been circumstantial with injuries we had trimmed on missing for a while

[00:15:48] do you think where where where we should be should be harsh it'd be lower what how do you think it's

[00:15:53] I think considering how I mean look our forward pack has not been the same pretty much week to

[00:16:01] weak right and I might be over exaggerating there you know someone will come and be like well in round

[00:16:05] so and so and so and so and so they were the same but just looking at the injuries and the chopping

[00:16:10] changing the forwards Nico Nico losing his confidence then getting injured and then not having to

[00:16:18] healthy half backs under halves I mean to be still in the top four and despite everybody just

[00:16:24] assuming that the bulldog is going to come in and be fourth like now we're what equal second

[00:16:29] with third pen worth an hour fourth like I think this is exactly where we should be considering the

[00:16:35] circumstances I know I said that a hundred times now Sam but the fact that we are still there

[00:16:40] still winning still fighting like I mean you can't not be impressed at this time considering everything

[00:16:46] that's happening now in the future and the next couple of games couple of danger games going into

[00:16:51] the finals we don't want PTSD of what happened in the last couple of years that will be another

[00:16:57] issue for another episode yeah but at this stage I'm happy with where we are and I think it's exactly

[00:17:02] where we should be are you expecting to win to finish the regular season it's all circumstantial Sam

[00:17:09] because I think I go I go between this coming week with the warriors being a huge danger game

[00:17:19] but also thinking the warriors they were up last week and now is this their sort of emotional

[00:17:26] low after the emotional high but you think about for noob like we want something to prove

[00:17:32] Sean Johnson would love to win his final game against Kronala yeah Metcalf would love to win

[00:17:38] you know what I mean there are there are a couple there that you just go okay if these things

[00:17:42] add up yeah warriors shouldn't be five dollar outside as if we're doing betting this is this is

[00:17:48] a danger game is it really up yes you're a last either four dollars and then they went out to

[00:17:52] to five dollars um last time I saw it could be a danger game but I also thought the dragons

[00:17:57] was going to be a danger game and then they came out and and performed so yeah but again it's

[00:18:02] this narrative that we're we're focusing on the opposition in the lead up to the game right

[00:18:06] yes now I completely agree with everything you said as it's factual I then as they agree with the

[00:18:13] fact that it's something to be concerned with because they were really up last week yep emotionally

[00:18:20] yep they delivered really poorly I thought Sean was was decent for patches yep even some

[00:18:27] shades of old Sean early on and he was still be up I mean he's quoted as saying

[00:18:32] the comeback win last year was I think aside from World Cup stuff like career best yeah

[00:18:36] highlight that's how personally he took it so yeah he wants to finish here and he wants to win

[00:18:43] the funerable like thing I'm not a psychologist I don't know the guy I'm assuming he doesn't really

[00:18:49] I don't think he's that invested yep from the things you hear the things you see he plays awesome

[00:18:54] he played pretty good last week he did and I'm not suggesting he's not a worry like he he's one of

[00:18:58] you you're studying when you look at you but as far as being emotionally up for it I get the feeling

[00:19:08] he's more probably gonna hang around and hang out with family afterwards and have a drink and

[00:19:12] you got him in like who else you say yeah I'll make a make-up yeah quick guy very quick

[00:19:18] very fast and someone that you are gonna have to circle when you're carrying yeah when the

[00:19:22] scrum moves that kind of thing look out for him I guess what I'm trying to say Ben is that

[00:19:27] we have this team finishing pretty high they've done really well most of the year

[00:19:33] stronger teams than last week yeah yeah we don't even know what the funerable make-up's gonna be

[00:19:39] I think if we lose this game it's not like a end of World thing but it's also like

[00:19:45] what are you doing yeah you know this is a go-time you've shown it in the past month played great

[00:19:51] you gotta keep that going I don't need a 30 point win let us need you to win yes so

[00:19:56] I think we have everything the play for even comparatively to legend finishing game except

[00:20:02] our career etc sure I just think our motivation is way too strong and the coach will have them

[00:20:09] up for that manly game I think is really circumstantial depends what we need what they need

[00:20:14] who's playing who's being arrested etc and that's gonna be the key because with the

[00:20:20] the latter predictor that I like to do at the end of every round right it can easily be a game

[00:20:25] no matter who wins and loses we stay in the same spot and that's us and manly yeah it could

[00:20:30] 100% be the opposite you know that we're fighting for our lives they're fighting for their lives

[00:20:36] that one is like give or take I think we can get to that that's a future absolutely but

[00:20:42] worries game man if we lose this one for lots of different reasons I'd be very disappointed

[00:20:49] primarily because we're a better team and we're in a better zone yes I don't think we'll be

[00:20:53] taken them lightly it's more just they got a win like just whatever it takes win the other thing is

[00:20:58] he's starting to think about risk and injury and that kind of thing I hope the players aren't but

[00:21:02] as a fan you almost want to start putting it in cotton wool because top four's pretty much guaranteed

[00:21:09] not sure where we'll finish so that stuff comes into play for me as a fan watching I'm not worried

[00:21:15] about the worries game but everything you say has a lot of a lot of truth to it it's up

[00:21:21] the sharks plays to really just lift and be bigger than all that because other three guys you

[00:21:26] mentioned that they're gonna go for 80 minutes after last week probably not like sure in mind

[00:21:32] because that's his last parar I guess but I don't know you really are doing it all for this one guy

[00:21:39] but you were supposed to do it last week for the one guy they changed the stadium name yes

[00:21:44] his kids kept the whole thing it was beautiful where do you stand on the Sean Johnson

[00:21:49] appreciation as far as there are things online like people suggesting we should

[00:21:55] clap in the seventh minute not you know some sort of thing like that or give them a lap of

[00:22:00] one at the end or give him the game ball etc where do you stand on that kind of thing nothing

[00:22:05] Sam nothing during the game like I mean the the guy didn't win a premiership for us

[00:22:12] great player all time great player potentially depending on the category that you pigeonholing in

[00:22:18] had I think probably one of his best season everyone talks about last year but

[00:22:22] the year that he did as a killie is up until that point like he was going gangbusters for us right

[00:22:28] and I really do appreciate that that year specifically yeah he can get the game ball

[00:22:34] I don't want this to be like I had the unfortunate opportunity to go down for camsmith's 400

[00:22:39] game just because I was in Melbourne that week and it was against the sharks and little did I know

[00:22:44] it was going to be camsmith's 400 and waste in the sharks plays a standing there doing the

[00:22:49] clapping him out he must be lose but it wasn't it wasn't pretty there was a there was a brief

[00:22:54] comeback but it didn't end well but like it was very much okay sharks are you clapping him on

[00:23:01] woo go cam and I'm a camsmith Hater at least as a player I am a Hater. None of that for Sean Johnson

[00:23:08] we will clap him off if if some of the players want to give him a hacker at the end that's that's

[00:23:14] beautiful stuff that's that's why you love the game afterwards. I'm not standing up at the seventh

[00:23:18] minute. Yeah it's true. Would you sit there? I protest. I would I'll stay seated. I'll stay seated.

[00:23:27] Maybe I'm going to be standing on the hill Sam I don't know yet. It'd be awesome if we

[00:23:32] had the crowd shot and like everyone just up and clapping you're just there. Yeah and that will go

[00:23:36] down well. Check it in your fun. Yeah yeah. Yeah doing a your one you know. Yes.

[00:23:40] I think that you're right. I think in game forget about it this is competition one two points.

[00:23:46] It's not our guy it's there guy. Yes and end of game game ball in the in the glass frame beautiful

[00:23:59] cool with that. That's totally fine but yeah in game I and only ask you because there is a bit of

[00:24:04] a sentiment rising about hey we should do this it's like no no let's just focus on the footy

[00:24:10] and it's not our fault that it just so happens that his last game is at Shark Park.

[00:24:17] Gallon flast regular season game was was it a lot I think it's like hard to get into it.

[00:24:23] Brookie in the finals you know what I mean it doesn't have anything Gallon got the

[00:24:29] standing emotion that like it. No but he did kick a field goal the end of the game.

[00:24:34] We'll show appreciation after the game and even that does also depend on the results.

[00:24:39] Yeah if we lose I mean I'll be already out before even starts his lap of order.

[00:25:00] I just I would like I would love to know where the coach's mind at is at at the moment going into

[00:25:06] finals with a hard a hard partnership that is doing quite well

[00:25:13] that is taking ownership of these games and particularly games against

[00:25:17] knights dragons, souts depending on the makeup. There were three sides that all had something to play for

[00:25:25] yeah and we beat them all in all different ways right? Souts didn't seem like anyone wanted to win

[00:25:29] we finally kick the field goal and win against the knights and then we quite frankly demolish the dragons.

[00:25:36] I would love to know where his mind is in terms of how Nico comes back and how what is the

[00:25:41] game plan here? Are we shooting everything to Nico's style pre-injury? Is he coming into now this new

[00:25:47] shark system that we sort of developed where we're just it's very much straightforward. This is

[00:25:51] what we're doing um how does Atkinson make up does he just go straight back to Newton is he 14

[00:26:01] there there's lots of things there that is gonna be really interesting to see

[00:26:05] in this couple of weeks leading into the finals and then I think we're gonna give it a red,

[00:26:10] red hot crack. I don't want to see us losing week one again I mean yes that will mean

[00:28:54] with TK and I actually love it I actually don't want to see it but I think the idea is actually

[00:29:01] not that crazy it's not that crazy not at all like I mean it's wild when you first hear it but then yeah

[00:29:09] the only thing that I think is yes big body could play somewhere else we don't want

[00:29:16] to do all that I don't really need Nico being played in another position we've already had

[00:29:20] that discussion earlier in the year and then last year in rep 40 like let's just be careful here

[00:29:25] I do like the idea of easing him in at 14 yeah and then just depending on how the games going

[00:29:31] yep then seeing how you inject him and what you do with the other pieces of puzzle I don't mind

[00:29:35] so I've been watching a few highlights today from games this year and which is not unusual for

[00:29:42] me and catching up a little bit on what Nico hasn't been doing so just getting catching up on

[00:29:47] Nico behind his game this year and I hadn't forgotten how great he's been but when he does what

[00:29:52] he does it's pure class and I'm confident he can bring that in and I'm also confident they can

[00:29:59] make it all work how it's been working and that means Trindle still dominating, Braille is still

[00:30:05] and we need that to really have a shake at things I feel like Nico has had enough time off

[00:30:13] he's been involved with the coaching he's been up in the coaches box he he's things he sees things

[00:30:19] I feel like he knows that he doesn't have to come back in and be the same guy he was he can tone it down

[00:30:25] a little bit he can ease into it do you think that's realistic or am I just up with the ferris no no no

[00:30:35] that needs to be realistic because you've seen Trindle needs to have a voice in the side when Nico

[00:30:42] is back he needs to be you know he needs to be ruling everybody and getting them all in position

[00:30:49] and making sure that you know what he thinks needs to happen happens and and then Braille needs

[00:30:56] to step up like he has as well and then Nico needs to ease in there or slide in there maybe

[00:31:04] he can just focus on his own game and what he's as you said he's been in the coaches box

[00:31:09] so he's seen the game plan he's seen everything from above and surely he's seen what the coach

[00:31:15] likes and what he doesn't like live in game and how things can be improved where Nico has

[00:31:21] where he's down side is or at least has been the last couple years is when he feels like that

[00:31:25] everything is on his shoulders he needs to now control everything and that's when everything goes

[00:31:29] bit haywire roosters final game as an example right but is it a blessing in disguise that now you've

[00:31:38] seen elevation of Braille taking leadership Trindle's getting a voice there and now he can come in

[00:31:44] and be like this isn't all on my shoulders yeah that's what I want to see from Nico

[00:31:49] yeah it's strange how it's all happened and I was down there when he's like did explode and it was

[00:31:56] we're kind of done here yeah and there was silence amongst you know 50 people at the ground working

[00:32:04] and it was pretty eerie I didn't leave there with the best feelings about how we were going to

[00:32:10] progress I spoke to the coach briefly afterwards and he was you know concerned with Nico but he

[00:32:16] himself was like like that already make a plan they all make a plans within two minutes and honestly

[00:32:20] like I saw it with my eyes Nico down minute or two there were hard walls going on coaching staff

[00:32:29] spine like it was pretty impressive actually can I ask then in someone that was there when those

[00:32:33] huddles start who did you see from a player's perspective who's the one that stood up

[00:32:38] uh McKinnis okay yes so McKinnis kind of went to the coach and it was brief and then within a

[00:32:46] McKinnis had grabbed Acconson I was like okay yeah and so that's the point of those guys now

[00:32:54] like the spine that you have just you know just conversation being led by McKinnis it wasn't like

[00:33:00] something out of rocky or whatever like they were no like finger pointing or arms around each other

[00:33:05] it wasn't just we're gonna have a private chat yes so you know that guy doing the podcast is

[00:33:09] no what I'm talking about but I did know that talking back because I was watching it and I could

[00:33:13] know make the assumption and that was impressive I didn't leave without hope but I did leave

[00:33:21] very flat going we're kind of screwed but we're not screwed and as you said blessing the

[00:33:27] skies in the weirdest of ways yes elevation and Braille can it has come good again

[00:33:34] Acconson's unbelievable for a guy who's belly played that level so the other thing is

[00:33:39] if there are injuries in finals if someone goes down you know it's not a lost course no because

[00:33:46] we've seen so many chopping and changing in every position yeah that everybody knows the game plan

[00:33:51] now and then hopefully can get into position and just work it out no matter what happens I think

[00:33:58] it goes back to the coach having this team that's been together in lower grades and first grade now

[00:34:05] he was obsessed with this keeping them together and now they're at that point where they're all

[00:34:09] over the hundred games or most of them are a lot of it together and they're getting this experience

[00:34:14] and then like a stone street comes in who's naturally talented yes but he just has to come in

[00:34:19] do one role you know catch the ball score like he's awesome he doesn't have to think about a lot

[00:34:24] except for his own game let the veterans worry about it the hundred games worry about it

[00:34:29] and it's the system that fits given us put together that just seems to be working this year

[00:34:35] better than any other year it's almost like he's waited a tad to take time to get to this point where

[00:34:40] everyone knows what the hell is going on even when it all falls apart play me he goes down he

[00:34:45] will be out for ten weeks alright well I could send you up there's what you go do Braille is

[00:34:52] gonna be a house partner but he's not gonna really play there yeah yeah jackweems you're gonna be

[00:34:59] named properly playing a lot click just you know the crazy things we've seen it's worked like

[00:35:03] if it continues to work beautiful I was very interested in what you just said about blessing

[00:35:08] disguise like it's and the only comparison and it's not something I thought of at the time but

[00:35:13] it's definitely something that when I saw other people talking about this is that do you remember when

[00:35:19] and going back to Sean Johnson was at Kyle Flanow and Chad in the halves and we were

[00:35:26] this is a few years ago obviously and we were winning a few games and then Sean was healthy again

[00:35:34] and was Flanow the coach at the time whoever the coach was at the time put Sean back in

[00:35:39] and it's sort of disrupted the whole thing I hope that it's not and I'm confident that the team

[00:35:44] is so different now and so differently coached here that no matter whatever they're changing

[00:35:50] and when the star player does come back in that it doesn't disrupt everything yeah well I think

[00:35:54] that you can have confidence in the fact that the coach and the seven is either seven

[00:36:01] hines have such a good relationship yes and and the coach has a good relationship with all the

[00:36:07] players he's very open with communication they know what they have to do it doesn't go to plan

[00:36:14] every week course but when it does games like the dragons are effortless in theory like we see

[00:36:22] back and go out when I can't wait for this one this is great and I think that with Mikko coming

[00:36:28] back he's been in the coach's box keep telling you that but even when I've been down at

[00:36:33] mid-day and Mikko was just rehabbing to the point where he could he could walk basically that

[00:36:38] was his ex go walk he would always sort of wind back into defensive line yelling out things

[00:36:44] then he'd go in the attacking line yelling out things and he was taking a roll at one point we saw

[00:36:48] him take a side Ronaldo and Tallah-Cyra the week bell playing together planning moves and

[00:36:55] like set moves it was really cool just to see him not just sit there and do his weights or whatever

[00:36:59] and yeah like he was heavily invested in how they're playing now that's what gives me confidence

[00:37:05] so with that being said and what you've seen that a lot of us that haven't seen that all of us

[00:37:12] are listening haven't seen that sort of thing you're putting him right back in in seven and it's

[00:37:17] all systems go I assume so I don't know if they're gonna flip it and go you're 5'8

[00:37:25] and the other guy and Trindles running the show okay as far as the Aconcine thing goes I got

[00:37:30] no idea and you're not putting him in the 14 no matter what your group chat is saying I'm not but

[00:37:37] I think if there were more games to spare if it was four or five weeks to go regular season I'd

[00:37:43] contemplate it because we only got two weeks to go for the finals yes I don't think that's really

[00:37:49] the right thing to do okay yeah I don't know what the coach's gonna do I've no intel and

[00:37:55] I think at this stage not many people would know they're pretty secret about that kind of stuff

[00:38:00] I get the feeling that he'll be super close to playing I don't know if he's actually going to play

[00:38:06] but I feel like from what I've seen from what I've heard in the fact they've named him

[00:38:11] he'd be close the only thing I'd be worried about is has he had enough contact

[00:38:16] in training to be past fit and that'll be the thing they decide on Friday whatever you know okay

[00:38:23] get him in some contact and see how he pulls up and they certainly don't want to rush it

[00:47:53] an impact so but I will say that like most people no matter what you thought of the whole thing

[00:48:01] in the lead up seeing and I will see 360 outside results well seeing the crowd seeing the fan

[00:48:09] day where literally I've spoken to the NRL and they literally only expected 150 to 100 fans and

[00:48:15] they got thousands of fans cramming into freemont street and then actually seeing the game watching it

[00:48:21] I watched it intentionally on F.S. One on Fox Sports in America to see what the experience was like

[00:48:27] and actually going oh yeah I'm jealous I should have went yeah cool look on our look at the

[00:48:32] went and new tools as well as fans of the teams no bad reports apparently really great time aside

[00:48:38] from the crazy weather they had that day yeah the wind and everything right but like today

[00:48:43] really incident yeah that was crazy it's a weirdly a summer day but within tense wind yeah

[00:48:47] but that aside which I think cancelled a few tailgating parties in that kind of event they had

[00:48:54] but aside from that as you said all promotions went well I know from Fox that not only the

[00:49:00] ratings through the roof but the experiences of as you said 360 and the Maddie John Show etc

[00:49:08] really well received yes so no brainer to go back and from what you and I know behind the scenes

[00:49:18] doing different things that it's it's going to be a great experience and the fact our theme is going

[00:49:23] it is very exciting I did whenever it was mentioned I'd always posted on Instagram

[00:49:29] sharks and Vegas all we ride then it came to the stage where it was oh yeah sharks are going but

[00:49:35] we're up against Penworth and I was like oh I might start riding because that could be a run

[00:49:39] yeah that could be a ride in itself but I think also the fact that like they're not going to

[00:49:45] be picked again into his time they are literally going to be cycling through every team and this

[00:49:50] might be the only opportunity obviously it's rich coming from me because I can fly for five hours

[00:49:55] and I will get there it's much easier for me to go then it is for other shark spans around here but

[00:50:01] I mean I have to go oh you have to go and it's also not necessarily specifically designed for

[00:50:07] people from the Southland Shire to head over like shot majority of our fan bases here yes so as

[00:50:12] you know we are fans all around the world in all sorts of places and hopefully those people

[00:50:17] converge those as you say they can get there obviously some kind I've just had a sun realization

[00:51:40] sort of awareness about NRL all year round this is not just a hey let's just go to Vegas yeah for

[00:51:45] one weekend yeah and we were talking about fair little bit about that the NRL have people specifically

[00:51:51] involved in their company now that their role is to do things like that in America specifically

[00:51:57] so that's to me says exactly what you just said they're in it for the long haul so to speak

[00:52:03] like they're gonna give it a serious shot like if it doesn't work after 10 15 years maybe they walk

[00:52:07] away and you go well they go have a good shot but I think at least will the five years is signed

[00:52:13] yes and you might see you three or whatever I don't know speculating then might do another five

[00:52:19] years or they might do a three year deal like I think that we're Peter the land is specifically

[00:52:23] like he's keen and from a known in our role perspective right and this is what I've been told

[00:52:28] I think I was told earlier this year or maybe late last year that from Nevada tourism so

[00:52:35] Australia is in the top five of countries people that come to Vegas but on average they

[00:52:43] only stay for let's say two nights three nights if they can use this NRL experiment

[00:52:51] to increase that average to just one extra night the the five years of NRL and the amount

[00:52:57] that the tourism board has invested in this as well pays for itself yeah I'm sure and that's

[00:53:04] in people that come to Vegas from outside of America if they can just extend that average night

[00:53:08] to one extra night yeah being go bingo Sam yeah it's done the people that are already going

[00:53:15] this time round as well as those that went last time absolutely frothing for it like people are

[00:53:21] so invested there been looking up what to do around the game you know go to the grand cange

[00:53:28] to go watch the maple leaf so they guess not like people are really I'm not a great planner

[00:53:35] I got my eye on things here or there like I know the maple leaf's gonna be there I'm pretty

[00:57:11] you know you had time difference is obviously I was in New York the best way I kept up was on forum

[00:57:16] there update in the score every three minutes yes and that's the only way that you can

[00:57:21] at the time and it was great yep look I was great way to follow and then you know I'd read

[00:57:27] in the paper or whatever online like you get the match report eventually but it was over five

[00:57:32] I know that you've only been in America for the last seven years so you have access to a

[00:57:38] million things I didn't have at that time technology was but what is it like for you as a Sharks

[00:57:43] tragic to follow them from New York City well here's the thing right as a Sharks tragic

[00:57:50] it is a lot of three AM Saturday morning wakeups what's that Friday night football what's that

[00:57:56] Thursday and Friday night I'm in the studio doing my morning show and that is hopefully it's on

[00:58:03] Fox Sports Fox Soccer which is another conversation we'll get to that and I've got the TV on

[00:58:09] in the studio and I can put it on just direct TV or so so a Thursday phone I game what's on

[00:58:14] is it there that would be so 8 PM start is a 6 AM start New York time ruley right okay I'm on air

[00:58:21] from seven so I can get to the station earlier chuck it on watch during the show okay

[00:58:25] it's this Saturday night 7 30 PM Super Saturday that's the that's a 3 AM special

[00:58:33] that's not pretty especially when we lose okay then it's a half time to go back to bed

[00:58:39] so are you getting up like right on kickoff do you get a 5-5 minutes before five minutes before

[00:58:45] alarm goes off plong myself on the couch if it's not on Fox you watch you on the app yeah so the

[00:58:53] channel real app is is handy but it's very expensive and that's gonna be the issue for the

[00:58:58] NRL moving forward if they want to make this whole hey awareness can I look at what is it like a month

[00:59:03] or whatever or geez um I feel like is it a couple of hundred a year okay so we're in like

[00:59:10] NFL Game Pass Turkey for us yes correct especially when you do the conversion right because

[00:59:14] for me it's US dollars but if you're traveling yeah and you were in you know Europe for six months

[00:59:20] and you want to try and get it then you have to convert it back to Australian dollars then it's super

[00:59:23] expensive but it is very handy and it has all of the Fox shows got live coverage of Fox league like

[00:59:29] it's very handy when you have it okay um but that's gonna be a barrier to entry for the normal

[00:59:36] American that wants to try and get involved yeah um the scheduling on the Fox channels in America is

[00:59:43] crazy I remember before that was a 2019 grand final I think um but to to did a joke article about

[00:59:52] Malcolm Turnbull showing up at the Australian bar to watch the grand final right that was the

[00:59:56] day before the grand final literally at the Australian bar for that grand final I was sitting there

[01:00:01] with my mates and Malcolm Turnbull came in literally sat at our table introduced himself and was like

[01:00:07] what channel would this be on? and I was like oh it's on like Fox soccer plus or something

[01:00:13] and he was like yeah I was I literally woke up and went through the channels because the roosters were playing

[01:00:17] and he's he's in suburbs and he couldn't find it on the TV I was like well if the former PM can't

[01:00:23] find it you'd think that he would have the connections that he could just call up and be like yeah

[01:00:27] yo what channel is this on no he came down to the Australian bar like the battutor article said um

[01:00:34] there are games they never have it on Fox Sports one unless it's the Vegas games um Fox Sports

[01:00:43] two which is in less um homes because it's a lower ranked channel um they will have your Thursday

[01:00:51] Friday night game but then they're also competing with the AFL Sam so they've got AFL AFL W games

[01:00:57] are on there sometimes they show replays of AFL games instead of the live NREL games which means

[01:01:02] then what is that just because they're a bit of deal? they just don't know though there's no one

[01:01:06] there to go oh this is actually a live game which is on it's just okay this fits in the the

[01:01:11] the AFL game is going to be two and a half hours that's great the NREL is only going to be

[01:01:16] two hours we need two and a half hours to feel it's just that sort of TV minded as opposed to

[01:01:21] someone they're going no this is going to be live this should be there and then the worst possible

[01:01:26] come is that the majority of the games are on Fox soccer plus why is it so Fox soccer plus when

[01:01:32] there's no normal Fox soccer channel anymore I don't know the plus is just there now and that's an

[01:01:38] added cost or that is an added cost you have to pay like 15 bucks a month and it doesn't even have

[01:01:42] all the games and it's a soccer channel and it's a soccer channel but it does have AFL rugby league

[01:01:48] super league in the UK it's a weird weird thing so there is lots of barriers to entry and I feel

[01:01:57] for any Americans or Canadians with their sports net and TSN or their channels because it's

[01:02:03] just as hard is there a reason they wouldn't approach an ESPN for example I used to work for

[01:02:10] Ostarmagazine or star being regional Fox tell and on my first trip to America I visited the campus

[01:02:17] in Bristol in Connecticut and the guy there that was head of programming at the time he was

[01:02:21] Aussie and one of my first questions was like is there any appeal for AFL or in our role like when

[01:02:28] they first launched ESPN one of the sports rights that they bought up overnight was AFL because

[01:02:34] it just needed stuff to fill overnight and that's where a lot of the AFL America fans

[01:02:38] learnt the game right and they said it just it doesn't make any money there's no reason for it

[01:02:46] they could put endless sports and repeats on overnight and it should be the exact same as putting

[01:02:51] in that this is 2012 so this is over 10 years ago could change by now but also there's that Fox

[01:02:59] yes synergy sort of thing right because I know when the production happened in Vegas

[01:03:05] yes Fox America we're very hands on with everything as in let us assist you in anyway possible

[01:03:13] so our smallish team of I don't know 30 40 people when over and then they had you know from

[01:03:20] rigors to whatever pretty much open house what do you need let us help you great with Fox yes

[01:03:26] like get that but just hearing you talk about the channels this is like well there are a little

[01:03:32] sports channels and maybe yes you would think and like it gets down to weed things like so the

[01:03:38] last rugby league world cup who ever bought the rights for it sold it is paper view like

[01:03:45] it's a WWE event right but you had to buy that was it was per event so like if you wanted to

[01:03:51] watch yeah if you wanted to watch the the quarter finals or you wanted to watch a pool game or whatever

[01:03:56] he had to plunk down the 20 bucks or 30 bucks to watch it that's weird it's just very odd

[01:04:02] yeah just a couple of things there which when you do see the articles about hey the

[01:04:08] warriors raiders game is going to be on big fox so that's free to air anyone with an antenna can watch it

[01:04:14] like yes they go oh it's going to be in 200 million homes I mean technically but the super

[01:04:19] bowl is in 200 million homes it's just going to be a Saturday morning yeah but it's like it's a big

[01:04:24] deal in terms of like from a TV point of view it's not going to get that bigger rating yeah but in

[01:04:31] access if everyone tuned in you would get those numbers that's right but in terms of access to the

[01:04:35] sport that is cool that it's going to be on normal free to air american tv the question is and

[01:04:41] this is one thing that me is an Australian watching the american and i'm putting an air quotes coverage

[01:04:46] on fs one after the basketball game ended halfway and then they joined it in progress another story

[01:04:51] for another day Sam do they go the extra effort and do an americanised coverage instead of just

[01:04:57] a more casting dangané and and mecanus or bossy or whoever it is he had right it would be hard but

[01:05:05] even if it was just um something like dangané obviously he loves american sport he he understands

[01:05:11] he put him in with whoever x player and just say look these are all Aussies but you're only broadcasting

[01:05:18] to america so you might have to explain what a 40 20 year good check good check because you don't

[01:05:28] from rambri in the coverage occasionally he one of them say for all about overseas listeners

[01:05:34] of course uh when he kicked from this one there was an example here or there and i was like uh

[01:05:40] there's not a lot of time for that no there isn't and that's the thing you need if you're going

[01:05:44] to do it you need to do a specific coverage where you literally have someone going like bossy saying

[01:05:50] the NFL has four downs and then you have to punt the ball while we have the equivalent it's six and

[01:05:57] you have to kick the ball or try and get a score before we get onto the next segment Ben tell me

[01:06:04] about what people going over connect spec from a legend stadium it is an amazing stadium um it is

[01:06:12] got a roof over it but the roof is like c-thru slash tainted a bit where you almost feel like that

[01:06:20] if it is in the middle of the day you're getting lots of sunlight even though it's not an

[01:06:23] um they've got the behind the the fake flame that they've got on one side of the stadium they have

[01:06:30] like a almost a big window that they can open up as a beautiful view of the strip but on a game

[01:06:35] day like the last Vegas game where it was very windy it's closed but that brings in a lot of breeze

[01:06:41] and so it feels very different to a normal enclosed stadium that you might be used to if you've

[01:06:48] won to like a Vikings game or something right um and because it's one of the newest stadiums

[01:06:55] and one of the issues with the Super Bowl was it was an 80 hundred thousand seat stadium it's like 65

[01:07:02] thousand it's you feel very close it's not as giant as like a cowboy stadium or a giant stadium

[01:07:10] it's a really great stadium to watch football in yeah I can only imagine what it would have been like watching

[01:07:15] league in it looks like it's almost got the the paramatta of western Sydney stadium at that

[01:07:22] kind of wideway you're or even like the new allele on twee just sort of right there yeah yeah the

[01:07:28] sight lines are very good and the the slope of the seat yeah and it's dangerously close to the strip

[01:07:33] yeah right yeah okay and it's at the end yeah it's at the end so the closest um big hotel is mandalay

[01:07:39] bay in the luck saw um because that's where I stayed in feb um yeah and that's only a very quick walk away

[01:07:46] okay it's gonna be very fun to watch the sharks there I will say that any tips for people going

[01:07:53] for the first time to Vegas apart from the old vs right um I really like the neon museum which is

[01:08:00] basically all the old hotels is the hara the Aladdin um start us all the old neon signs or collected

[01:08:08] one open airspace when I saw it about 10 years ago they just projected lights on to it to sort of

[01:08:14] show you what it might have been like now they've actually read on a lot of the lights so they actually

[01:08:17] light up you can do the tour around they talk to you about the hotels or whatever that's a cool

[01:08:21] sort of glimpse into old Vegas and what it's like um that's one that I always suggest um and really

[01:08:28] it's just it's what you make it walk through all of the casinos go to top golf and have fun there

[01:08:37] you know take advantage of the pools will be closed in feb and march won't they Sam um

[01:08:42] like it's just it's just a lot of fun yeah but like old Vegas is great yeah and then obviously

[01:08:48] there's the obvious things go to the grand canyon and all that sort of stuff and it's gonna be good

[01:08:54] it's gonna be good it'll come around pretty quick that's why I'm sort of addressing it now with you

[01:08:58] you've got experience being there a lot of our listeners they're right in the Vegas I've had so many

[01:09:02] people say to me hey if you need any tips or I'm like yeah I'll send me what you go I mean I've been

[01:09:08] three times yeah I'm certainly not an expert in the place but I've had a good three trips they had

[01:09:13] a lot of fun uh so I'm looking forward to getting over there it's gonna be cool um I think it's

[01:09:19] gonna be a bit of a trip just seeing all the black white and blue over there well one of the things

[01:09:22] I do like is that the sharks will probably the first team out of the fort to really go early the launch

[01:09:28] video they've started the campaign whereas it's my understanding just based on one of the third

[01:09:33] from certain people is that the other teams are gonna go heavy maybe after Christmas maybe just before

[01:09:39] Christmas whereas I feel like I really like the sharks have gone yep wearing let's start you know

[01:09:44] they're giving away tickets at Carilla and that sort of like there is there is activities happening

[01:09:49] yeah I think that the sharks have done a great job too in that sense going like hey we're going

[01:09:55] it's on sale check out this flight sale right now and this hotel like they're really

[01:10:02] encouraging fans who can get there to get there I think that's the kind of the sort of slippery

[01:10:07] slope you don't want to go down then we don't want to push it too hard because there is clearly

[01:10:13] and especially in these times especially who can't go like it's just it's not a walk in the

[01:10:24] kids or fam you know so it's a tough one I think personally like from a social kind of point of view

[01:10:29] like because you don't want to be that in that situation where someone your family's like oh it's

[01:10:35] all they want to do and it's like all the one do is take you but yeah times it's tough but the

[01:10:40] sharks have handled it really well they've made it fun and I think they're sort of saying if you can

[01:10:45] come it's going to be a really good experience if you can't you know we're going to send over Gary

[01:10:51] over and we'll have some fun you'll be out of follow us and I mean we saw Foxy who great job I'm

[01:10:56] sure no I did whatever they did as well so if you can't get there I think he's still going to

[01:11:02] have a great time with the sharks being there there might be a little bit of foam up course

[01:12:08] but there are barriers I was having that conversation today with a friend on the phone and he said

[01:12:14] are you going to Vegas I'm like yeah I said you should come along and knowing that he

[01:12:18] is in an okay position to do so he was like yeah you know I'm keen I went well the opposite

[01:12:23] or just said about planning I was like man there's you get a hotel room last minute that's

[01:12:27] not a problem maybe just sort your flight I'm sure there'd be a seat somewhere yep the game

[01:12:33] don't decide now and I'd say that to our listeners if you're in the middle or you just can't

[01:12:38] do it right now like see how you going later in the year early next year you just never know

[01:12:43] you don't know what the surface there's to be but there might be a flight you can get on

[01:12:47] and let's let's look at this way that there will be people that are listening and they

[01:12:51] they will be cynical and we'll think it's a cash grab or for whatever reason they don't like

[01:12:56] that the sharks are going over shouldn't could ruin their season people blame the bronchos

[01:13:01] bad season on it and XYZ the very least I do like the fact that within the eight teams that were

[01:31:34] fetched few that's great to hear yes but the fact a lot of people have these beliefs I'd expect

[01:31:40] the unirled to be very worried about the public perception of the referees in official been

[01:31:43] corrupt but they do nothing at all to put these claims to bed if you look through all the game

[01:31:49] threads of any supporters forum you'll constantly see comments about certain referees favouring certain

[01:31:53] teams I think this is damaging for the game what are your thoughts on this do you think referees

[01:31:59] are corrupt? Oh my god, I think they go into games who preconceived ideas or do you think they're just

[01:33:24] something blatant like an active foul play if there's a try scored and one of them sees that

[01:33:32] someone's off-site but no one will succeed it I'll be they'll be letting them know so they are there

[01:33:37] advice my point is been that the referee it's true they have a way to many people in their ears you

[01:33:42] probably need like one person just to guide them go ahead them they do get tipped on what

[01:33:49] tackle counters because we've seen over the years issues whether it's the seven tackles everyone

[01:33:53] blows up and it's like well that is a human error yes so they do have a chief referee in the I don't know

[01:34:00] where they are if they're in the bunker or if they're in the stand well they're in them know what

[01:34:04] they're in the tackle counters okay even though the referee knows they just thought they'll say

[01:34:08] confirming tackle one confirming tackle five but won't be necessarily every tackle but there's a lot

[01:34:13] going on there's a lot going on it's a positive in that they they're out there they're not alone

[01:34:19] and well resource they're getting helped the negative is they're running around for 80 minutes

[01:34:25] using their voice the entire time and at the same time trying to listen to several voices in

[01:34:31] ahead touch judges vdrfs referee coaches all at once and it's like it's a lot the handle and I

[01:34:40] I admire them for doing it I think the majority of them do a really good job but it's one of

[01:34:45] those things where the speed of the game they'll never get at 100% right every moment the

[01:34:50] bunker stuff they should be getting right yes but the other stuff you can't see everything unless

[01:34:56] you want to make it NFL and I sort of am torn about whether they need to do that or not

[01:36:46] game has gotten faster they have too many voices in their ear they cut it down to one where for

[01:36:51] referee or I think it needs to go back to two um to accommodate that just have the same one person

[01:36:57] in the bunker every game it's only 16 hours of work anybody in an office spends more time

[01:57:03] week yes we get in the win i think we do and any doubts that i had at the start of this

[01:57:09] poll you have convinced me other lot has because i expressed my feelings but like some other games

[01:57:17] it's just one of those that if we do get the l and i don't want us to i'll sit there and go oh yes

[01:57:22] that was a danger game i should have seen this the science coming but i think that um we

[01:57:28] have shown like i said just a bit earlier night's game dragon's game rabbit os game those with

[01:57:33] three teams that really had something to play for we did win and three different ways and i think

[01:57:38] that we do it again this week it's not gonna surprise you that i'm a fan of films that

[01:57:44] recreate sporting moments tv shows of course and a lot of that is make believe and a lot of

[01:57:50] it is based on fact some of it is stretch truth i haven't asked the coach this but i hope he is

[01:57:56] the feeling is starting to mold this team in a way that he used to play the game for the roosters

[01:58:03] the very successful roosters team even when he was coach of the roosters we make the most of

[01:58:08] the real opportunity yeah i feel like the past few years we've obviously let it slip

[01:58:13] mm-hmm now this year no one's really tipping us to win the comp that's fine but we're going

[01:58:18] to mean the top four we could finish second we could finish third finish fourth we could finish

[01:58:23] fifth but that's unlikely but we're up with the big boys and i really feel like if i had

[01:58:30] the team before a game running out aside from saying do your best play hard yada yada

[01:58:37] i would let them know in a very coached air look on a way that this stuff doesn't happen often

[01:58:44] like how often are you top four really with a shot to do something yes and it's you know

[01:58:50] rest you might be going next year could be the year after jack we're not sure you know there

[01:58:55] are guys leaving guys coming you need to make the most of these moments i know it's the

[01:59:00] romanticism of the sport which is really kind of a lot of the reason why i watch it anyway but

[01:59:06] i think a lot of these guys need that kind of not reality check but that kind of reminder that

[01:59:13] you know time is fleeting you're in a really successful team you all love each other play

[01:59:17] until you cannot play anymore and i'm sure they do but just remind them of the fact that at this

[01:59:23] point you can do anything you want okay you might have to go play pen or something pen or

[01:59:27] pen or a big deal get the wind like do what you're doing i'm obviously not coach Taylor are you

[01:59:32] unleashing this speech this round is this the round no no i'm just saying leading up to

[01:59:40] the finals at some point it needs to be said maybe it is going into week one of the finals okay

[01:59:46] maybe there's this week i don't think you can be reminded about that enough that you know yeah

[02:00:28] what you've told us what it's like being over there yep we need to hear about your ground final

[02:00:32] experience so i was lucky enough to get promised tickets and went with me my mom and my grandparents

[02:00:42] all long suffering shark's fans we went to the prelim as well the week before so which was

[02:00:50] exciting enough and then got to the grand final i was lucky enough i was in a section that was next

[02:00:58] to where all the old players were the Jason Stevens Dean Tristus the Matt Rogers of the world

[02:01:07] did you go so hello i did i do have a photo of me ruling interrupting her um Jason Stevens and

[02:01:15] Matt Rogers celebrating to get a photo oh yeah that was that was a bit that not they would remember

[02:01:21] but probably not my finest hour my finest hour was that i did end up on the field after the game

[02:01:27] okay going uh so through my work my friend Katherine um used to be married to Andrew Johns

[02:01:35] and worked with Andrew at channel nine and was it Sony for a while yes yes correct yes um

[02:01:42] and is one of my closest friends okay and we worked um at a radio station together at the time

[02:01:47] and she had tickets right at the front in the 100 section of whatever so she was right at the front

[02:01:54] i was a level or so up i wanted to run down and snake her position for when they did the lap of

[02:02:00] one or i wanted to get nice and close at the same time um during that year i was working at Nova and

[02:02:06] McEnnis came on every week as our football guy so also we've gotten to know him uh wanted to

[02:02:12] catch him and say congratulations straight away um so i celebrated interrupted Jason Stevens

[02:02:19] and Matt Rogers getting their photo my apologies then ran down to go where Katherine was when i

[02:02:30] with Andrew was there and she was taking him home and and i was like oh i am not going to be

[02:02:37] missing out on this opportunity if Katherine is getting on the field i will be joining yeah so i

[02:02:42] screamed at the Katherine she turned around she turned to Andrew um Andrew saw me nodded went over

[02:02:51] what's the statute of limitations here at this point did you know him? I know i'd never

[02:03:00] just like my guy um and Andrew went over to Darren Lockhear got his channel nine on a field

[02:03:07] pass and gave it to me and no just get you now studying your face more hair better voice better

[02:03:16] everything thank you just looking at Darren Lockhear next to you yes it's security guard if he

[02:03:22] doesn't know who Darren Lockhear is it's not you know versus the path yes you're okay then it

[02:03:27] means you know worlds but not you know this is it now luckily i did have a media pass a generic

[02:03:34] and our old media pass of my own yeah because i worked at Nova that i did have all year so i did

[02:03:41] have that on me so if security did stop me i could have shown but that's not grand final credentials

[02:03:47] i looked at the security guard that was guarding the gate and he was not going to open the gate for me

[02:03:54] but it was just that if i did maybe jump over i had the credentials that i could have joined them

[02:04:02] that was the just you got and i did and the water at least look channel nod and there i was on

[02:04:08] the field and i've just thrown everybody under the bus you say police there were police that were

[02:04:13] there i think i think everyone saw what was going on and i was a guest of you had your colors on

[02:04:18] yeah i had my jersey on which makes it even more unbelievable but yes i ended up there on the

[02:04:23] field and so once you're on you can do it if you want pretty much yeah watch the cell of

[02:04:29] watch the trophy celebration took videos right up nice and close and then just lingered with

[02:04:36] the john's family for a bit and then i because Andrew was interviewing you and Andrew was doing

[02:04:43] interviews yes Andrew was doing interviews and then one by one i was losing everybody so then

[02:04:50] Katherine disappeared then Lewis the kid disappeared and i was like okay now i'm weirdly alone

[02:04:57] Andrew's now disappeared and i'm like okay now i'm on the field in a shock jersey

[02:05:03] with the wrong credentials but kind of the right credentials and so i made a beeline straight to

[02:05:10] mekennis and saw him gave him a big hug we took a photo and he would later then say on with

[02:05:17] our when he recap the grand final that he was getting the trophy and looked around saw his wife

[02:05:25] and his kids this is his last game ever they were getting held back from security he was waiting for

[02:05:30] them to celebrate the moment and then continues to look around the field and his first thought

[02:05:34] was why the hell is Ben Harlem on the field of course he is after this game and it was after i

[02:05:43] got my photo with mek, Todd and Cratchelations that then a security guard was like why is this

[02:05:49] random fan on the field hugging mekennis and said what are you doing here i said i have my

[02:05:53] media pass but i am done so i will walk and so he nodded to yep that's fine and then i walked

[02:06:00] back to the security guard that gestured for me to jump over and then he opened the gate and i said thank

[02:06:06] you so much and he said have a good night and i walked up and left the stadium and it was the

[02:06:10] last night of my life oh my god and so did you stay with the family did you leave family what

[02:06:16] did you do um so i stayed with family there was a consideration of going back to the um

[02:06:25] the stadium when they did the whole coming back to the shire but i sort of felt that my night had

[02:06:32] that stage and um we went back home and immediately watched the replay yeah right and went

[02:06:40] to bed a very happy man did you work the next day did you ask public holidays of it

[02:06:45] public holiday next day but was back on the Tuesday and what was very cool was that we did

[02:06:50] organize and my turnal thanks to the previous sharks administration because i quickly got in contact

[02:06:56] and said we have met coming in um we had met calling the the Tuesday after yeah um to talk

[02:07:03] about it then we had him in later that week with fits in wippa who i was working with at the time

[02:07:07] and the sharks organized for the trophy to get brought down which was a lovely moment for an

[02:07:12] air that we had it all set up for him and also was very shamelessly an opportunity for me to get

[02:07:16] a photo with the trophy yeah um so you can take that whichever way you want that it was me doing

[02:07:21] my job at making the studio look fantastic for me as a shark's fan just looking for any

[02:07:26] excuse to get a photo with the trophy before it got wister way what shape was in um you know what

[02:07:32] all things considered the two days after tip top shape on the phone at least um i know

[02:07:39] gal called into the other Sydney breakfast shows um and everyone sounded fine and better than

[02:07:44] you'd expect um and then he was still on a high bit a football how cool is this high later in

[02:07:52] that him yeah um very appreciative airing cool guy that is cool that's a great story

[02:07:57] that's a moment you'll have for him yeah that's right and still have not been sent to find

[02:08:02] by ains at stadium well nor should you when you have police and security saying please come

[02:08:07] and do this that's right exactly i was there to a score Andrewson and make sure that he

[02:08:11] was it looked after while he did get confused in my shark's jersey i think the goat might

[02:08:16] help out there a lot yeah i think that yeah if you're a fuel police insecurity at the NRO

[02:08:21] grand final and an immortal and a close to an immortal goes yeah all right yeah he's with us

[02:08:28] and i had my little media pass that's the one was there any uh contact with luck here at all

[02:08:33] no the only contact is they still have his media pass i think my mom stuck it into a scrap book

[02:08:38] or like my baby photos he might have got kicked out yeah you know he got the fine from ains

[02:08:43] at stadium that's exactly right oh that's awesome dude i can almost i was saying this to a friend last

[02:08:48] week i can actually remember it almost the order of the songs that they played like they did up

[02:08:53] up crinalar 100 times then it was like finally from the pricilla soundtrack there was lots of like

[02:08:59] you know first time finally there was a bit of uh what's is it the celebration song yes celebration

[02:09:06] was played there was lots of sort of those theme songs not just generic celebration party songs

[02:09:11] i figured out in the finally one yes finally i remember because i could hear it as i was running

[02:09:15] down the escalators to try and get to the front for the interesting i mean i i in hindsight

[02:09:19] the monitor well it's you know what it was tailored to us so that was good it was

[02:09:25] i think you see some more play yes it did and and urban you know what um urban came into work

[02:09:32] the week of and he asked me who should he support in the grand final and it is only one option

[02:09:38] what would he ask that because he had no idea really um yeah he was like who's playing who should

[02:09:43] support what's going on okay um he obviously doesn't have fox like a ploss in Nashville so

[02:09:48] he didn't know who was playing and i was like there's only one choice of who you're supporting here uh

[02:09:52] yeah it was it was a well-dame man i like that everybody and i mean it's the reason why you ask

[02:09:56] everybody their story but everybody has a difference in the story absolutely and it's great it really

[02:10:01] is great yeah there's some really not sad ones although i'm sure there are sad ones out there

[02:10:06] but just there's some really bizarre ones there's one chance he coming there's one he kind of

[02:10:11] have heard before and oh yeah that's awesome and but everyone's got a different story which is

[02:10:16] which is incredible um i know the i know the people behind sitting behind us did gesture to

[02:10:22] my grandparents go um your boys on the field and they're like yeah we're aware like we're

[02:10:28] watching this happen as well they must have been pretty stoked yes yeah i'm happy to share that

[02:10:34] moment with them as well yeah any other stories about the old boys at the game um i did

[02:10:39] like the Dean War his super league grand final jersey did he yeah i didn't know that that was good

[02:10:47] well wow yeah but that it was good to see them celebrate because they much like the

[02:10:51] gal-e-t photo right like everybody felt it all the players that lived through 97 grand final

[02:10:57] 99 pre-lim 2008 pre-lim you know everybody that has some sort of um love for the club it was good to

[02:11:04] see that group as i said group i also heard the shark span in mid 90 so that's the team that

[02:11:10] is there there's a players good to see them share that moment um the two rogers brothers embracing

[02:11:15] obviously because of how much that means to them and they're dad little moments like that

[02:11:21] are fun to watch and you can see how it affects everybody yes yes it's a question i will always ask

[02:11:27] people it's uh the funny thing i'm finding now been and you hear it on the episodes if i don't

[02:11:32] know usually is with the players now they're all getting so younger yes some of them are just like

[02:11:39] yeah i think Oregon said he was flicking between channels what what else was on on that Sunday

[02:11:45] he just he wasn't a league dude he was just an athlete who played union and just a six in your

[02:11:52] kid or whatever and he was between that and top gun or whatever and yeah that's what happened

[02:11:57] to go out of was it the Olympics maybe and didn't really all you have of course the strangest one

[02:12:04] and i'll say this with a mentor's respect was the coach who said i was away on holidays and i was

[02:12:11] so annoyed that the roosters weren't involved from a coaching point of view when he was assistant coach yes

[02:12:17] that he didn't really have a fight in the game until like then he was like i'm really glad they wanted

[02:12:22] of course but he said i was on a beat somewhere in taheria whatever and i was just annoyed

[02:12:28] that we weren't in the final so i really showed you how much he's like he's done i didn't say

[02:12:32] that one dude because there's there is like why want you with your family watching it and

[02:12:38] sure in the you know yeah but obviously it was way before he was coming to kronolar and just

[02:12:44] yeah that answer really threw me yeah cause you think he could say all you know i was very happy

[02:12:47] because of the family connection i didn't say a lot but he didn't watch though well i don't think

[02:12:52] he just had a very distant memory where it's like you and i were like i woke up at 7 o 7

[02:12:58] and i got the train i remember the whole soundtrack yeah you get the soundtrack so yeah that's

[02:13:02] what's kind interesting for me now that the older everyone's getting especially from a player point

[02:13:07] of view the more vague the answers again yes 100% so it was okay when you'd be like you know

[02:13:17] was amongst the playing group and i was a kid and it was amazing i knew what it meant and

[02:13:22] yeah there's all those examples but now like but getting younger and younger it's like uh yeah

[02:13:27] like we learned about it on our first day here kronolar and we watched the video and i'm not saying

[02:13:34] as wrong it's just not it's just fascinating like yeah you and i and all that was just like

[02:13:40] obsessed and you know until we think about that's what happens you're you're fan is a kid

[02:13:47] then you're older than the cheerleaders and you go okay then you're older than the players

[02:13:51] and then you start complaining that the players aren't putting their socks all the way up and that's

[02:13:54] when you go i'm old okay i admit it everybody is younger than me you're gonna plan a bit of

[02:13:59] few things that i can play with socks apparently there was another study i think on reddit and

[02:14:04] shocks players are very consistent with the socks um i would think yeah yeah just because you notice

[02:14:10] when they're not right 100% because we're old yeah like i could see i'm not sure about this

[02:14:16] a very grand would have a socks down okay like old school or Mitch Moses is one of the ones

[02:14:21] that has the long socks but then it's cut off anywhere as the ankle socks then what yeah it's very
